Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How can you stop global events from ruling your mind and your life, particularly if you already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">suffer from anxiety<\/a>\u00a0 or are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-unstable-personality-disorder.htm\">sensitive person<\/a>? When we are now faced with what seems an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-uncertainty.htm\">endless stream of tough things<\/a>, from pandemics to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-terrorism-on-society.htm\">terrorism<\/a> to being on the verge of a world war?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to handle anxiety due to global events<\/h2>\n<p>So when it comes to anxiety, first we can need reminders of the things deep down we already know.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Yes, watch for news bingeing.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Don\u2019t fool yourself into pretending you don\u2019t have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/controlling-behaviours-actually-guilty.htm\">control<\/a> here. You can<\/strong> choose how much news to take in a day. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Particularly notice if you read the same news item about global events from several different angles. Is this really necessary? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Also if you use news outlets that are known to be sensational and work to twist up your emotions. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And cancel things like automatic updates popping up on your computer that make your anxiety worse. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Make a timer your best friend.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It can be very eye opening to use a timer to time your news reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">try to keep to 15 minutes of reading at a time<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">keep a daily tally of news reading and research <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or time how many hours between each news &#8216;check in&#8217; you leave, so you can&#8217;t fool yourself that you &#8216;need&#8217; to check again. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A timer is also very good to help with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">anxiety \u2018drifting<\/a>\u2019, where your thoughts are so anxious that you suddenly realise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">an hour has passed and you\u2019ve done nothing<\/a>. Setting a timer to go off on the hour, every hour, can pull you back \u2018in\u2019 to reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Add on the tools of the trade.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_118385\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3778391878_79292a18a8-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118385\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3778391878_79292a18a8-1-225x400.jpg\" alt=\"global pandemic anxiety\" width=\"225\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3778391878_79292a18a8-1-225x400.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3778391878_79292a18a8-1.jpg 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: nasrul ekram<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-anxiety.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is a full blown physical experience.<\/strong> And as a sufferer you will know the tools that counter anxiety&#8230;. but might practise them less than you mean to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">So double duty with that timer going off each hour, <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">using it as a reminder to spend two to five minutes on an anxiety tool like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-de-stress-mindfulness-relaxation-break.htm\">mindfulness mini-break<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/hormetic-stress-can-it-actually-improve-your-mental-health.htm\">deep diaphragm breathing<\/a> to a count (seven in, eight out, for example)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">body scan where you relax all muscles,<\/a> especially shoulders and jaw<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>grounding<\/strong> &#8211; putting your attention on your feet for a few minutes and imaging the earth supporting you<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">blasting your favourite song and <strong>dancing it out<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualisation<\/a> &#8211; create a &#8216;happy space&#8217; visual, such as a field of flowers, that you can conjure up for a few minutes when anxious.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Consistency helps with anxiety tools. The more you train your brain to turn to such tools that work, the more you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">keep your anxiety in check<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Also watch for group anxiety bingeing.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When we are anxious and our mind is tripping out on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">illogical thoughts<\/a> about the state of the world? Our first desire would ideally be to talk to someone who can calm us down.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">And yet it&#8217;s far more common to instead seek out others who will accept and confirm our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-disordered-thinking.htm\">illogical, frantic thinking<\/a>\u00a0about global events. Of course two or three anxious people talking together do not lower anyone&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Ask good questions about who you are reaching out to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reaching-out-support.htm\">Is this the right time to talk to this person<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Is there someone else who would be a better solution right now?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Or that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\"> toxic friend<\/a> who uses you for attention she never returns? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Don\u2019t use your anxious \u2018but with what&#8217;s going on it might mean the end of the world\u2019 thoughts to see you cave in and respond to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/energy-vampires.htm\">people you know are bad for you<\/a>. If anything, now is the time to guard yourself even more carefully over people who create any kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fear<\/a> or upset. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Use an intermediate<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>to have a break. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you find you are in a constant<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">state of panic<\/a> and know that the news is making it worse? Take a break, even a full week or so, by enlisting the help of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">trusted friend<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or partner who knows about your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Ask them to contact you immediately only for urgent news,<\/strong> but then otherwise to just give you a daily update on the essentials. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Don&#8217;t trust your thoughts about global events.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes, our world might really change beyond what we yet understand at any given moment, whether it&#8217;s due to a pandemic or a war. Yes, we might<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\"> lose loved ones<\/a>. These are all serious concerns.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But your anxiety will make things worse still. That&#8217;s what anxiety does. It relentlessly seeks out the very worst possible scenarios and side step any positives.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Borrow from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"> CBT therapy<\/a> and do a &#8216;thought chart&#8217;. This involves recording your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a>, finding their opposites, <strong>and finding thoughts that are more a &#8216;shade of grey&#8217;<\/strong>. Who survive daily war, repeat natural disasters, or ongoing famine.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/practicing-gratitude-mood.htm\">Gratitude<\/a> is one of the most powerful, proven ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">shift perspective<\/a>. What five things can you be grateful for right here and now? And what five things, not matter how small, went RIGHT today instead of wrong?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">9. See the hour before bed as more precious than ever.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is the enemy of<\/strong> sleep, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleeplessness<\/a> affects our immune system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>See this as war. You against all your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">bad habits<\/a> in the name of protecting your heath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So this is not the time to<\/strong> \u2018just read some emails\u2019 before bed when they might be upsetting, or to call that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\"> family member who always makes your anxiety worse<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Turn off. Do all those things you always say you will but don\u2019t.<\/strong> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">guided meditation<\/a>, drinking a sleep tea, taking a bath, whatever it takes to unwind a bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And if you suffer<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\">night anxiety<\/a>, where you always wake up at 4 a.m. mid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/recognize-a-panic-attack.htm\">panic attack<\/a>, it might be time to go to bed that one or two hours earlier like you\u2019ve always said you would.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Laugh and cry.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Holding onto emotions can make us feel more<\/strong> tightly wound and anxious. Make time for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\"> a good cry<\/a> when needed.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And don&#8217;t underestimate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/laughter-does-it-really-improve-your-psychological-health.htm\">the power of laughing<\/a> to slow down anxiety. It doesn&#8217;t make you a bad person to feel good despite global events, or to commit half an hour a day to watching your favourite comedian on Youtube. It makes you someone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">committed to wellbeing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">11. When in doubt, help others.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Ready to hear one of the fastest ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stop-overthinking.htm\">escape your racing, busy thoughts<\/a>? Get so busy helping others you don&#8217;t have time to listen to them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3804225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a> it improves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> and also lowers blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Walk an elderly neighbour&#8217;s dog, get someone in quarantine groceries. If you are in lock down, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">get creative<\/a>. Write letters, comment on forums, join one of the many &#8216;online hubs&#8217; forming where people offer their services to each other for free.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">12.
