That is finding what is going on in your life or in the world\u00a0 hard to take at the moment? Whether it&#8217;s a community event that has led to mass grief, or a world event like war or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">pandemic<\/a>, HSP&#8217;s can be hit harder than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Being HSP when world events are challenging<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many people manage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/powerlessness-when-world-events-overwhelm.htm\">difficult world events<\/a> like war and pandemics with a higher level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress and anxiety.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">But if you are sensitive, you might also find yourself:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">tapping into\u2019 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a> of others<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">feeling grief<\/a> in advance, for what is to come <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">randomly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\"> crying <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">thinking about death<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted all the time<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">having mini \u2018can\u2019t cope\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">breakdowns<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>panicking about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-pet.htm\">animals<\/a> that are suffering out there<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">frustrated with other people\u2019s lack of concern or seeming callousness. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is regular advice about stress not working for me? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are self-identified as \u2018HSP\u2019, then the sort of advice going around<\/strong> for stress like, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect with others<\/a>\u2019, and \u2018be realistic\u2019 might not help you so much.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"> You might feel frustrated talking with those around you as they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\">don\u2019t understand how upset you feel<\/a>. And for you, advice to be &#8216;realistic&#8217; and &#8216;stay calm&#8217; can seem a way of diminishing the very real suffering of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What DOES help a sensitive person in tough times?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what alternate things do we need to consider as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-oversensitive.htm\">sensitive person<\/a> when there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-in-kids-news.htm\">challenging world events<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\"> life changes<\/a> happening? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. See it as a self-care challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Yes, regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/self-care-a-help-guide.htm\">self-care<\/a> matters for us all during tough times. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that during challenging world events we, &#8220;Take deep breaths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/yoga-for-depression.htm\">stretch<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">meditate<\/a>. Try to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">eat healthy<\/a>, well-balanced meals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">exercise regularly<\/a>, get plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep<\/a>, and avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">alcohol<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\"> drugs<\/a>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But as a sensitive person,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\"> self-care<\/a> can mean more than such basics.\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0We are talking not always putting yourself last and <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/generous-person-or-over-giver.htm\">being a constant \u2018helper\u2019<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_118408\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118408\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-3-400x284.jpg\" alt=\"HSP sensitive person\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-3-400x284.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-3.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/giraffecereal\/5860286213\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Kristin Schmit<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Overcoming the need to help everyone and anyone, and actually<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">setting boundaries<\/a> instead of just saying you will?<\/p>\n<p>It means you will have energy to help those who actually matter to you.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Stop comparing yourself to others.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>In times of group suffering\u00a0<\/b>others might seem to be doing well compared to you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The gremlins in your head might start, saying that<\/strong> you aren&#8217;t cut out for this, you can&#8217;t cope, you are &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-belong.htm\">too weird<\/a>&#8216;, or &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-wrong-with-me.htm\">what is wrong with you<\/a>&#8216;. Remember, these are just thoughts. You are different, that&#8217;s all. You just have to find your own, unique way forward, and find people you are like, your &#8216;tribe&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Take time out.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Let others know in advance you will be taking time outs due to<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/general-adaptation-syndrome.htm\"> stress<\/a>, and that it\u2019s not personal (nothing ruins a time out for a HSP than worrying that they have upset others by doing so). If living with roommates or family, consider a &#8216;time out&#8217; sign for your door. Sometimes &#8216;normies&#8217; need reminding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Don\u2019t over-communicate.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>During times of difficult world events or mass grief, you\u2019ll be receiving more emails, texts, and DMs than<\/strong> usual. You need to take time-outs from this, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">As a sensitive person you\u2019ll feel that people \u2018need\u2019 you. <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">True as this might be, you need you, too. Instantly responding to everyone will leave you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burn-out-syndrome.htm\">burnt out<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And do not feel you have to respond to everyone who contacts you<\/strong>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">exes from the past<\/a> who weren\u2019t kind, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\"> toxic friends<\/a> who always took but gave nothing in return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask yourself the following:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do I really need to respond now?<\/li>\n<li>Can this actually wait?<\/li>\n<li>Is this a person who is going to energise or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/energy-vampires.htm\">deplete me<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Do I really owe this person a response at all?<\/li>\n<li>What would be a better use of my time?<\/li>\n<li>Is this an energy exchange? Or will I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/generous-person-or-over-giver.htm\">give and not receive<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Connect with things other than people.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Other people need human connection to feel okay in troubled times. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">For many HSPs, connection can lead to overwhelm instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what they do feel \u2018energised\u2019 by is connection of another form<\/strong>. This might be animals,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\"> nature<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a>, or a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spirituality-and-mental-health.htm\">higher source<\/a>&#8216; like God or the &#8216;Universe&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118407\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118407\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2992146699_024a50e207-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"HSP sensitive person\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2992146699_024a50e207-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2992146699_024a50e207.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/orvalrochefort\/2992146699\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">orvalrochefort<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Use whatever it takes to give you the connection that actually fills you up<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-playfulness-can-lightening-up-change-your-life.htm\">Dance<\/a>, paint, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">draw<\/a>, sing, pray, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">meditate<\/a>, chill out with your pet and talk to them as much as you want. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-ecopsychology.htm\">need nature<\/a> but are in a city, clean your houseplants&#8217; leaves one by one, or listen to birdsong tracks. Whatever works.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">If you find yourself saying, &#8220;I don&#8217;t have time to create or meditate&#8221;? Remember that we need to have energy to give it. See time connecting to your personal &#8216;source&#8217; as important right now as anything you are doing for your physical health. Remember, mental health and physical health are connected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. And yes, watch out for media binges. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other people binge on headlines to be \u2018in the know\u2019. Sensitive people binge on the sad stories.<\/strong> The videos of pets whose owners are in hospital, of old people with no friends.\u00a0 <\/span>This doesn&#8217;t help you, and it doesn&#8217;t help you help others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> Also watch out for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/music-and-mental-health.htm\"> sad music<\/a> at this time. It&#8217;s like quicksand for a HSP. Just don&#8217;t.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Replace worry by action. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Worry as a sensitive person leads to<\/strong> feelings of extreme despondency and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\">helplessness<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Try to identify each major worry. Write it down. And then try to find one action, no matter how small, that can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you really can\u2019t find any action, then use tools that help you feel less helpless.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a>, praying, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualising<\/a> the world in a better place, they are all valid. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How you became a highly sensitive person (HSP) and why it matters<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The term \u2018highly sensitive person\u2019, is a term coined by<\/strong> American psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/hsperson.com\/\">Elaine Aron<\/a>, in her series of successful books on \u2018HSP\u2019 people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>While Aron believes that some of are \u2018born\u2019 sensitive, <\/strong>based on one animal study? \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Psychology would rather suggest that while some of us can be<\/strong> born with a propensity to be sensitive, that capacity would develop (or not) due to environments and experiences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Things can leave you a sensitive person include<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<\/a>. This encompasses neglect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">poor parenting<\/a>, and all kinds of child abuse particularly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Why does this matter? If you just tell yourself you are &#8216;born this way&#8217; you trap yourself in a box you can&#8217;t budge from. All of the above issues are not traps. They are things you can work on. Change is possible.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can therapy help me stop being so sensitive?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It can definitely help you cope far better<\/strong>. Working with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapist<\/a> can help, for example, with things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">regulating your emotions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">setting boundaries<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">saying no<\/a><\/li>\n<li>not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreacting<\/a><\/li>\n<li>not taking out your emotions on loved ones<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">communicating your needs<\/a> more clearly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Really need support to get through tough times?
