Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Not sure if a person you know is just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/are-you-overreacting-how-to-tell.htm\">overreacting<\/a> to life, or is actually dealing with a mental illness? Or is it you that is acting out of sorts, and you don&#8217;t know if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">you need help<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mental illness vs mental health issue<\/h2>\n<p><em>Now is a good time to point out that &#8216;mental illness&#8217; can be\u00a0 considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/handling-depression-stigma.htm\">stigmatising tho those with mental health challenges<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The preferred language to use can be &#8216;mental health issue&#8217;.<\/strong> Note that most mental health issues are NOT illnesses we see under a microscope. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">Mental health diagnoses<\/a> are generally groups of symptoms shared by many people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And in the case of things like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-doctor-about-anxiety.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>, they can be a healthy response to a very unhealthy situation. If you experienced a trauma like, say, being attacked? NOT being affected would be far more troubling than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-to-do-if-you-feel-depressed.htm\">feeling depressed<\/a> or anxious after.<\/p>\n<h2>How to recognise a mental health crisis<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to recognise when you or someone else is in the middle of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-crisis.htm\">mental health crisis<\/a>. If this is the case, it is not about wondering if it&#8217;s a mental illness but about getting getting immediate help. This includes if you or they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>hurting or are going to hurt themselves or others<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/flashback-vs-hallucination-vs-delusion.htm\">hallucinating<\/a>, speaking about things that are not real<\/li>\n<li>and are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-violence-how-to-respond.htm\"> becoming violent<\/a><\/li>\n<li>have barricaded themselves in somewhere in a way that is dangerous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>You can take them or yourself to an emergency room. Or,<\/strong> if it seems things are calm enough that nobody is in physical danger, call a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/calling-a-mental-health-crisis-line.htm\">mental health crisis line<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it a mental health issue?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">So now back to having a mental health issue. What are the signs you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health issue?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Unusual swings of emotions.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Some of us are just naturally emotional people. But notice if the change in emotional output is unusual, or very marked.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do the emotions match the situation at hand, or are they too big?<\/li>\n<li>Can you stop the emotional outpouring or is it out of control?<\/li>\n<li>Do you even know what the emotions are about or are they random?<\/li>\n<li>Are you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\">going from zero to one hundred emotionally<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">Depression<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\"> post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a> can mean we find ourselves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">randomly sad<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/crying-for-no-reason.htm\"> crying<\/a>.But so too can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">emotional shock<\/a> from a difficult experience, which can last a few weeks but generally then clears up.<\/p>\n<p><strong> If emotions are suddenly very big and out of the blue, and come with a huge rush<\/strong> of energy and symptoms like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-you-talk-too-much.htm\"> talking fast<\/a>? It can be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mania.htm\">mania<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>. Anger and lashing out.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes the emotion we feel<\/strong> when suffering with mental health issues is blinding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/deal-with-anger-management-techniques.htm\">anger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Again,\u00a0<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder or shock<\/a> might be the issue. It leaves you very on edge and with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight, flight, or freeze response<\/a> that is out of control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The onset of schizophrenia<\/strong> can also involve anger.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Sudden outpourings of anger are also a common sign of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">addiction problems<\/a>.\u00a0 The lack of addictive substance causes extreme tension that can roll into<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\"> anger and rage<\/a>. Is the other person known to have issues with addiction? Or if it&#8217;s you, is it time to admit that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">bad habit has rolled into an addiction<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Changes to the way you think.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Our thoughts are often the first sign we have a mental health issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With depression, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">thoughts will be very dark<\/a> and about your past, constantly going over things in a negative light.<\/li>\n<li>With anxiety, your thoughts will be racing and increasingly illogical, and will be about a future and all that can go wrong.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-intrusive-thoughts.htm\">Intrusive thoughts<\/a> telling you to do strange things can be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Thinking you are hearing voices can be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Immobilised by fear and paranoia.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Fear can happen to the best of us. But if we are immobilised by it,<\/strong> or we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-paranoia.htm\">paranoia<\/a>, it can be a sign of a mental health illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">Generalised anxiety disorder<\/a> feeds on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fear<\/a> and a diet of increasingly illogical thoughts. It can then turn into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic disorder<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Paranoia can also be a sign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a>\u00a0which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/chronic-stress-mental-disorders-schizophrenia.htm\">triggered by chronic stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118420\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118420\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1503226922_6139d2c46a-1-257x400.jpg\" alt=\"mental health issues pandemic\" width=\"257\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1503226922_6139d2c46a-1-257x400.jpg 257w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1503226922_6139d2c46a-1.jpg 321w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/adohnes\/1503226922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">adohnes<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Making big unrealistic plans.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">Has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friend<\/a> called your ranting about their amazing plan for you all to leave society behind, immediately, tomorrow! To create a countryside commune!\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Or are they saying anything else unreasonable, while also talking faster than usual, and seeming\u00a0 overconfident?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Check to see if he or she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">\u00a0bipolar disorder<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Unsafe behaviours and mental illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When we start throwing caution to the wind in ways<\/strong> that are unusual for us, it can signal a mental health crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Depression <strong>can leave us feeling like we have no future and nothing matters. So why not<\/strong> do something destructive? Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/promiscuity-and-depression.htm\">unprotected sex<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">drug binge<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recklessness can also be a sign<\/strong> of bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. A sudden decline in self-care and hygiene.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stopped doing things you always did, like exercise? And even let the personal hygiene drop? Not washing your hair, skipped your shower when you never do? Changes to personal care are often a sign of depression.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Practicing self-harm.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t have to just look like cutting or burning yourself. It can be things like unsafe sex, not dressing for the elements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\">refusing to let yourself eat<\/a>&#8230; anything where you purposely make yourself suffer or experience pain.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Changes to social patterns.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Look for changes to your personal baseline. Are you suddenly going out every night and talking to strangers when you never do? Sleeplessness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">Sleeplessness<\/a> is a related symptom to so many mental health diagnoses researchers are not sure what comes first. One makes you vulnerable to the other<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">11. Not able to maintain your daily life.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Suddenly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">can&#8217;t cope<\/a>? Again, mental health issues often mean our thinking is high jacked. When our mind is occupied our coping skills slide. For example, depression can leave us with <span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">brain fog.<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> And anxiety, if it goes into overdrive, can lead our brain so busy with illogical thinking that we can&#8217;t function well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How long have you had symptoms?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">Life can be very challenging<\/a> at times. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">Bad things can happen<\/a>. We can all go through moments of emotional shock, or grief, or big upset. If you know why you are feeling the way you are, and it&#8217;s around a certain event, you might just be experiencing a natural emotional response that will pass.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Mental health issues don&#8217;t always have an obvious cause. They just seem to come out of nowhere sometimes. And they linger. If it is a mental health problem it will go on for several weeks or months.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #333333;\">What do I do if a loved one seems triggered?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If someone is experiencing mental health issues, it can be harder than usual to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communicate<\/a> with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do reach out anyway &#8211; what matters is <\/strong>that the other person feels cared for.
