A good social life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">a job that was bearable<\/a>. But you&#8217;ve just found out you&#8217;ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">made redundant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Dealing with being made redundant<\/h2>\n<p>How can you cope with losing work?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Allow yourself to mourn.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Losing your job can be a disorientating change that affects your<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity<\/a> and sense of a future. And it is a serious mental concern.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/mental-health\/unemployment-and-job-insecurity-linked-to-increased-risk-of-suicide\/\">NHS quotes a study<\/a> which found one in five suicides globally is connected to unemployment.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Being made redundant, if it&#8217;s a job you had for a long time, can also trigger the <\/strong>stages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/deaing-with-grief.htm\">grief<\/a>. This can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/denial-in-psychology.htm\"><strong> denial<\/strong><\/a> (I\u2019m fine, whatever, who cares, I hated that job anyway)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\"><strong>anger<\/strong><\/a> (how dare they do this to me)<\/li>\n<li><strong>bargaining<\/strong> (this isn\u2019t fair, I refuse to care about anything until I get a job back)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\"><strong>depression<\/strong><\/a> (I can\u2019t do this, it\u2019s hopeless)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-acceptance-and-commitment-therapy.htm\"><strong> acceptance<\/strong><\/a> (I guess this is how it is is, something else will come along).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The trick is to realise it that you will run through all sorts of thoughts and emotions. It won&#8217;t be logic, or necessarily pretty, or easy. And that that is ok.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Don&#8217;t assume you know how others will react.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Part of the blow of losing your job can be feeling like you are letting those who depend on you down. This is particularly true if a partner relies on you economically, or you are supporting older parents or children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">Shame<\/a> leads us to negative thought loops full of &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">cognitive distortions<\/a>&#8216;, thoughts that seem real to us at the time, but are not reality. And we end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\">making assumptions<\/a> about how others will or won&#8217;t react.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Reach out to your loved ones and talk to them. Give them the chance to respond before<\/strong> assuming you know how they will. If it really feels too much for you at this time, there is nothing wrong with getting someone else to tell them.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Get help with options and practicals.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The hopelessness that losing our job can make us feel means we can assume we don\u2019t have options.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Someone starts to tell us we might be eligible for government funding and we cut them off, convinced we aren\u2019t. Right when we need to be open to possibilities, we shut down.<\/p>\n<p>And when we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxious and depressed<\/a> things that should be easy can be a challenge. Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">thinking gets foggy<\/a> and we are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"> tired<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">So it is essential to recognise it&#8217;s not the time to be proud and try to do everything by yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Ask a partner, friend, or family member to help you investigate your options, such as<\/strong> current government assistance, and things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">organising your budget<\/a> to get your through or seeking other work possibilities.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Recognise who you are outside of your job.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kyle-glenn-MbPDSi0ILMo-unsplash-400x320.jpg\" alt=\"made redundant\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kyle-glenn-MbPDSi0ILMo-unsplash-400x320.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kyle-glenn-MbPDSi0ILMo-unsplash-500x400.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kyle-glenn-MbPDSi0ILMo-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Losing your job is a surefire way to learn if you have over-identified with it along.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">None of us are just what we do for a living. We have relationships, interests, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">values<\/a> that also make us who we are.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Being made redundant makes you realise what<\/strong> relationships matter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">Who your real friends are<\/a>. What you really want to do with your time. What actually interests you when all the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distractions<\/a> and obligations fall away.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you don\u2019t like or aren\u2019t sure of what you are discovering?<\/strong> If you aren\u2019t the ambitious person you thought, if you don\u2019t like the relationships you have?<\/p>\n<p><strong>See this as a time of reckoning to recognise what needs to change<\/strong>, and start focussing on what you do want and how you can get there (a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">counsellor or coach<\/a> can be a great help here).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Help others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A large part of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\"> anxiety<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-depressed.htm\">depression<\/a> around being made redundant is not losing the job itself, but feeling useless.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">You are not useless. You still have all the skills and resources you had when working, as well as others that you might not have yet recognised. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Using them to help others, such as by<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteering<\/a>? Not only helps you stop feeling so useless, it is shown by research to lift moods. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/12\/151214084744.htm\">study at Yale University School of Medicine<\/a> found that, &#8220;helping behaviour seemed to buffer the negative effects of stress on well-being.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Or better yet, find a volunteer job for one day a week. A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0277953619303284\">meta-analysis of nine years worth of data from the<\/a> UK Household Longitudinal Study<\/span> found that we only need to work eight hours a week to have the same mental health benefits as someone who works five days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Break through your comfort zone.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If we\u2019ve been in a job long enough, it can be such a comfort zone that it\u2019s been a long time since <\/strong>we&#8217;ve done anything that stretched our limits<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panicking<\/a> and <\/strong>numbing out on distractions, or trying to force your way back into your comfort zone, consider riding out the &#8216;new zone&#8217; energy. Try a hobby you haven\u2019t before, like drawing or learning a language. Do something you know you will be bad at, like a dance class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The more we realise we can fail, and be bad at things, the more<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">resilient<\/a> we become. And the more we try new things, the braver we become and the more we learn about ourselves. All great things to foster when it comes to finding new work in the coming economic climate.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And at the very least you will remind yourself that despite tough times, there is still so much to learn and experience and be here for. You&#8217;ve got this. Keep going.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Recognise you are not alone.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Big<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\"> life changes<\/a> like being made redundant can leave us feeling different than others and<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>.
