In a culture where we simply avoid the subject until we have no choice, many of us <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\">fear either our own end<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-losing-loved-ones.htm\">fear the death of those we love<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why are we all so afraid of dying?<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fear<\/a>, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-the-unknown.htm\">fear of the unknown<\/a>.&#8221; H.P. Lovecraft<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>As humans we fear what we don\u2019t know.<\/strong> We fear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">new schools<\/a> as children, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">new jobs<\/a> as adults, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-life-fast.htm\">what our future will bring<\/a> or won&#8217;t bring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And <\/span><span class=\"s1\">u<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>nlike other cultures who celebrate and talk about death, in Western society<\/strong> many of us don\u2019t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talking-to-children-about-death-and-dying.htm\"> talk about death<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repairing-family-estrangement-time-for-an-olive-branch.htm\">within families<\/a> until it is forced upon us by fate. We aren\u2019t sure what we are dealing with. <span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">And because death is so unpredictable and unavoidable, we feel<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-feeling-vulnerable-mean.htm\">vulnerable<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it really even death you are afraid of? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Fear of death, if examined, can also be about other things entirely.<\/strong> We are afraid of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">not having done enough with our lives<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">leaving others behind<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/time-management-tips.htm\">not being organised<\/a> and leaving a mess for others to sort<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">being forgotten<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">what comes after death<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-pain-chronic.htm\">pain<\/a> and suffering.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Fearing death as a single female<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_118532\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118532\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118532\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/ben-white-qYanN54gIrI-unsplash-1-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Fear of Death\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/ben-white-qYanN54gIrI-unsplash-1-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/ben-white-qYanN54gIrI-unsplash-1-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/ben-white-qYanN54gIrI-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/ben-white-qYanN54gIrI-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Ben White<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Research shows that there are certain factors that make us <\/strong>more vulnerable to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\">death anxiety<\/a> and death <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1480703\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A study<\/span> <\/a>looking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-management-for-students.htm\">students<\/a>, church members, and workers at an air terminal found that being female and being older was more connected to death anxiety. Whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/tired-of-being-alone.htm\">being alone in life<\/a> without a partner could cause death depression. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to handle fear of death and dying<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So what can we do if we have a constant death<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fears-and-phobias.htm\"> fear<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Make an overview of your life.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Developmental psychologist Erik Erikson is famed for his<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erikson%27s_stages_of_psychosocial_development\"> \u2018eight stages of psychosocial development\u2019<\/a>. The idea is that a healthy individual progresses through different stages of understanding of themselves and others in a lifetime. He labelled the last stage of life <em>Ego Integrity vs Despair<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In this phase we begin to think over our life. We can find meaning and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">purpose<\/a> in the life we lived (Ego Integrity), or we can view our lives as a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\">failures<\/a>, of missed opportunity (Despair). If we find integrity, we are less likely to have death anxiety. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So an idea here is to sit down and intentionally make your life<\/strong> overview, now. On paper. With the intention of finding meaning and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">purpose<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Divide your life into decades, or into five year chunks if you are young still. What things did you do during that time that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-transpersonal-therapy.htm\">bought meaning<\/a> and purpose?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Educate yourself. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Again, fear of death can be driven by the unknown.<\/strong> So make death and the process of death a known by doing your own research. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">This could be talking to a \u2018death doula\u2019, or visiting one of the now trendy online &#8216;death cafes&#8217; where people talk openly and positively about death and dying. In a survey held by <a href=\"https:\/\/deathcafe.com\/\">deathcafe.com<\/a>, 80% of users felt that being part of such a group made them feel better about life, not just death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Read the science about death, and about different views of life after death.<\/strong> If you are afraid of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-pain-chronic.htm\">pain<\/a> and suffering, learn about the body&#8217;s unique methods of navigating them. You might even find watching an autopsy online helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are afraid of<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\"> losing loved ones<\/a> like a parent, look into the steps one must take after losing someone. Learning about the stages of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">grief and bereavement<\/a> might help.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. And yet we keep putting off the very things that could help with that, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>buying life insurance<\/li>\n<li>preparing a will<\/li>\n<li>asking someone to be a guardian of our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talking-to-children-about-death-and-dying.htm\"> children<\/a><\/li>\n<li>organising paperwork<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">decluttering our house<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">budgeting<\/a> and organising our own funeral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>If you feel macabre about even beginning with any of this, start small. Just write out a rough sketch of your will and see how it feels. Or ask a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friend<\/a> if they would like to get organised around this sort of thing together.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Learn and practise mindfulness. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p6\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2010-14719-010\">a <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2010-14719-010\">study published in the\u00a0<i>Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, <\/i><\/a>Kashdan and his fellow researchers <strong>looked at what happened if we bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> to our fear of death.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">They found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindful people<\/a> were not only more tolerant of others despite having to think about death, they also showed less fear around their own death.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>[Learn how to have a mindfulness practice starting today using our free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">&#8216;Guide to Mindfulness&#8217;<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Connect to something bigger than yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s not about believing in God, or finding religion.<\/strong> It&#8217;s about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spirituality-and-mental-health.htm\">finding something that gives things a bigger meaning<\/a> for you personally.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14614169\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study on religion and spirituality in end-of-life caregivers<\/span><\/a> found that religion and spirituality improved their ability to cope with distress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can therapy help me with a fear of death and dying?<\/h2>\n<p>Absolutely.
