In a world of coronavirus,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/surviving-lockdown-coronavirus.htm\"> lockdown<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/hsp-sensitive-person-pandemic.htm\">social isolation<\/a>, what can lead to feeling balanced again?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>5 Therapy Tools for Troubled Times<\/h2>\n<p>Therapists have tools that can help, tried and tested by research and client work. Here are a few used by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-counselling-psychologist.htm\">counselling psychologists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">psychotherapists and coaches<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Progressive muscle relaxation.<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Struggling with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">high anxiety<\/a> and can&#8217;t relax? <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is largely a body-based experience. And stress can be, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So therapists don\u2019t just approach dealing with anxiety and stress by just using the mind, but also by <\/strong>using body-based techniques. One such tool has been around since the 1920s, and is called &#8216;progressive muscle relaxation&#8217;. It&#8217;s designed to counteract the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight, flight, or flee mode<\/a> anxiety triggers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It is a thorough system based on the idea that by purposely stressing the muscles then releasing, you create a level of relaxation right through the body. Instead, we get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-schema-therapy.htm\">stuck in repeat behaviours<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Therapies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/acceptance-and-commitment-therapy-london.htm\">acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)<\/a> would suggest we embrace and commit to learning from difficulties. They are opportunities for change, and for making new choices and decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><span class=\"s1\">Harley Street counselling psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/caroline-powell.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Caroline Powell<\/strong><\/span><\/a> suggests, \u201cwith yourself, your partner, friend, or relative, talk through a series of concise thoughts and ideas that might help you to modify the fearful feeling, should it arise again. T<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">goal<\/a><\/span> <span class=\"s1\">is always to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">motivate<\/a> one another to find new ways of proactively affirming, valuing, reassuring and empowering each other by acting to foster acceptance and embrace change&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The questions and process <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/caroline-powell.htm\">Caroline Powell<\/a> recommends: <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">Looking back now, take a situation where you felt confused, disorientated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">How did you feel on a scale of zero to 10? E.g., trapped, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">scared<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-feeling-vulnerable-mean.htm\">vulnerable<\/a>? Write it down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">How did you respond? E.g., quiet desperation, restless irritability?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">What was different, if anything?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">How did your score at 2) influence any change?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">What could you have done differently?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">How might this help on another occasion?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">What might you do next time? Discuss.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li4\"><span class=\"s1\">Now use your imagination to envisage, practice and rehearse your new response to a similarly threatening situation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Or be in another reality entirely? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Consider visualisation, also called \u2018guided image therapy\u2019, a psychotherapeutic tool popular with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-behavioral-therapy-techniques.htm\"><span class=\"s3\">cognitive behavioural therapists<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You can use guided visualisation to create a<\/strong> \u2018happy place\u2019 you feel good being in when life gets too much. Or you can use it to imagine how you\u2019ll deal with scenarios in the future, or to \u2018redo\u2019 situations you didn\u2019t do well in so that you are ready for &#8217;round two&#8217; should it arrive.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more in our article<\/strong>, &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">The Benefits of Guided Visualisation<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Locked in without access to nature? Why not visualise it? A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6176042\/\">2018 study on guided imagery<\/a> published in <em>Frontiers in Psychology\u00a0<\/em>found that nature-based guided imagery was more effective in reducing anxiety than non-nature based visualisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. The Chair technique. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In self isolation and want someone to talk to or fight with? Why not try<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gestalt-therapy.htm\">Gestalt therapy<\/a>\u2019s famed \u2018empty chair technique\u2019, and work through some issues while you are at it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The idea here is to be open to discovery, and to go with the<\/strong> experience without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assuming<\/a> what will come out of it (Gestalt therapy is very much about acceptance, and of working with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> the here and now<\/a>). <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Choose a situation or person that you feel you have an issue with. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Sit across from an empty chair, and make the chair the person, situation or issue (yes, you can even make the chair the coronavirus). <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Now talk to the chair as if you are talking to that other person\/situation. Don\u2019t edit yourself, just let words flow out, without<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\"> judgement<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you feel you\u2019ve said all you need to say, switch chairs. And now speak back to yourself (the chair you just vacated) as the other person\/issue\/situation! <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can keep switching chairs, having a \u2018dialogue\u2019 until you feel a sense of peace. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are driving your own self crazy in isolation, and you are going into<\/strong> self judgement? You can also do this exercise with different parts of yourself. So on the chair is the part of you that wants to, say, contact your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\"> manipulative ex<\/a>. Have it out with &#8216;her&#8217; until you find a compromise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Mindfulness. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You\u2019ve heard of it. But have you actually<\/strong> tried it? Properly? <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mindfulness<\/span><\/a> means being very present to what is, instead of caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past. And in troubled times, when none of us quite know what\u2019s ahead? It\u2019s a super tool. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It&#8217;s not an overnight achievement. Note it&#8217;s often called a<\/strong> \u2018practice\u2019, because you need to devote a bit of time each day to it, before it starts to become a way of being. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But mindfulness works.<\/strong>\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3485650\/\">Studies by Harvard researcher Ga\u00eblle Desbordes<\/a> have shown, for example, that even an eight-week course of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a> affects the amygdala in the brain, perhaps explaining why it seems to help those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dating-someone-with-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Learn how to do mindfulness now using our easy<\/strong> and free \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">How to Guide to Mindfulness<\/a>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t get on top of your anxiety and stress and time for some proper support?
