Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Social isolation heavily affects our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> and the way our brain functions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if you had grand plans for all you\u2019d get done now you have <\/strong>moved to the countryside to write a book?\u00a0 Or quit a job in an office to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/working-from-home-mental-health.htm\">launch a business at home alone<\/a>? But find yourself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/procrastination-big-deal.htm\">underachieving<\/a> and acting far from your typical self? Here&#8217;s why.<\/p>\n<h2>Social isolation and your brain<\/h2>\n<p>Psychologists have discovered tha<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5055788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">t even if we\u00a0<em>perceive\u00a0<\/em>we are alone and isolated<\/a>, versus really being so, it affects our health and our brain.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Less socialising, less oxytocin\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Hugging and physical interaction lead to bonding, which involves the release of oxytocin, the brain&#8217;s \u2018happy hormone\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Even non-tactile positive social situations can give us some oxytocin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006322303004657\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study published in &#8216;Biological Psychiatry&#8217;<\/span><\/a>\u00a0found that oxytocin and social support together lead to lower cortisol levels, &#8220;as <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399;\">well as increased calmness and decreased anxiety during stress&#8221;. [2]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>In other words, your all alone, hug-free existence <\/strong>as you write that book or launch that novel can\u00a0be leaving you less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">able to cope<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Lack of social contact leaves us spaced out<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/freestocks-pUvMN3j2kGc-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"self isolation\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/freestocks-pUvMN3j2kGc-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/freestocks-pUvMN3j2kGc-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/freestocks-pUvMN3j2kGc-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/freestocks-pUvMN3j2kGc-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>The less oxytocin, the harder it can be to focus.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oxytocin decreases activity in the amygdala, which is a good thing. The amygdala is the part of the brain that activates whenever there\u2019s a perceived threat, leaving us in that horrid stress state that kills focus, where our brain is too distracted scanning for more danger.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/npp2015111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A study on the way we scan others&#8217; faces for danger<\/a> found that increasing oxytocin via a shot of nasal solution meant less vigilance and feeling worried about danger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So if not having social contact and physical contact with others can mean<\/strong> less oxytocin, it can mean that we are more easily triggered into stress state&#8230; and get nothing done.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Convinced others just make you feel trapped? And you NEED to be alone?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sure this can&#8217;t be you, that you should be able to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\">get a lot of work done alone<\/a>, as you feel trapped by others? Felt suffocated in an office space with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s a question of space. It is true that<\/strong> people getting too physically close to you can trigger the amygdala to decide there is a potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">danger<\/a>. So if your colleagues were always hanging over your desk and invading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-space.htm\">your personal space<\/a>, you could have indeed been in \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress mode<\/a>\u2019, meaning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">fuzzy thinking<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhaustion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>But now you&#8217;ve gone to the other extreme instead of finding balance&#8230; you&#8217;re trying one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/changing-workplace.htm\">the new ways of working<\/a>. But still aren&#8217;t high functioning!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Having emotional outbursts?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Feel stressed you aren&#8217;t getting tons done now you&#8217;ve chosen social isolation? <\/strong>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-space-mental-health.htm\">working from home<\/a>? And think that slouching on the couch eating comfort food is the answer? And it can be irritated by gastrointestinal upset&#8230; as well as poor posture! So sit up straight and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">eat healthy foods<\/a> that don&#8217;t risk upsetting your gut.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Sleeping terribly since your self-imposed social isolation?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>If you aren&#8217;t getting work done,\u00a0<\/b>and are worried you won&#8217;t reach a deadline or your new business will fail? You are living with\u00a0the shadow of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And as <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms10996\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a 2016 study <\/a><\/span>by neuroscientists at University College London makes clear, uncertainty means our brain reacts with fear. Which means we go into loops of <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>, and things like<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\"> our sleep suffers<\/a>. [4]\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And when we are tired, we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">struggle even more to focus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Social isolation just leaving you\u2026 flat? Blah?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Your brain might have interrupted dopamine cycles because your usual routine isn\u2019t happening. <\/strong>Dopamine is your brain\u2019s show of positive reinforcement each time you complete a step or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">goal,<\/a>\u00a0and is connected to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rest-reward-system.htm\">rest and reward system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For some of us, it can be our old routine that gives us all the little success moments that<\/strong> trigger this system and have it release dopamine. Got to work on time! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-eating-healthy-relationship-food.htm\">Made a healthy lunch<\/a>! Found a good outfit!<\/p>\n<p><strong>And now here we are, wearing the same<\/strong> track suit for the third day running, eating bags of crisps. Our rest and reward system has flatlined, we are low on dopamine. And that means less<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\"> motivation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Feeling downright sad?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>The lack of or decreased physical movement that social isolation can lead to could be behind any low moods you are going through.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21820466\/\">cross-study over almost three thousand adults<\/a><\/span> [5] found that we are less likely to be depressed if we participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity. This is particularly true if we are overweight. This link between low physical activity and depression was confirmed by <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/4\/3\/e004580\">later research<\/a> using statistics from Health Survey for England. [6]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>As well as pushing yourself to do some sort of exercise, consider<\/strong> doing short bouts of movement. Breaking up sitting time in intervals with light intensity activity is <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.physiology.org\/doi\/full\/10.1152\/japplphysiol.00978.2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found to improve anti-anti-inflammatory responses<\/a>. In other words, it helps your immune system.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Spending all your time in front of a screen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your trip away to finish that novel or your new time spent alone at home to launch a business sees you\u00a0 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/screen-time-recommendations.htm\">sitting in front of a screen all day<\/a> working? And then spending all your down time also watching TV and films so you don&#8217;t go out and get distracted or spend money you don&#8217;t have? It might be contributing to any<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"> low moods<\/a> you are experiencing.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20307805\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Scottish study<\/span><\/a> looked at the lifestyles of almost four thousand men and women and found sedentary behaviour and screen time as leisure time was associated with poorer mental health scores. [7]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Suddenly getting colds and flus?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>No, you aren&#8217;t just acting sick to get attention from friends back home<\/strong> if you&#8217;ve gone away to get work done! Social isolation affects our immune system.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/112\/49\/15142\"> 2015 study out of the University of California <\/a>looked at white blood cells, known for their important role in the immune system&#8217;s response to infections. It\u00a0 found that in both humans and rhesus monkeys,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\"> loneliness<\/a> meant an increase in genes involved in inflammation, and a decrease in expression of genes connected to antiviral responses. [8]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>So what to do if you need to get work done alone?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">First of all, if this all sounds far too familiar? If you feel unmotivated, tired, sleepy, and stressed, despite all your good intentions to lock yourself in and be a work machine? Then cut yourself some slack. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You can&#8217;t win against a brain that is trying to protect you.<\/strong> And it truly isn&#8217;t your fault.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Then aim for balance. A great idea is to use<\/strong> social contact as a reward system, thus getting in some dopamine hits. Have a friend lined up to call after a certain amount of work. Or, if in the countryside, agree to let yourself go to a local village restaurant for dinner if you get a certain amount of work done.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you really can&#8217;t work alone, then see it as a<\/strong> lesson. You tried, but now you know social isolation does not equal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/time-management-tips.htm\">productivity<\/a> for you.
