Darcy<\/p>\n<p>Spend hours thinking about situations in great detail? Or about a certain person or thing? Rumination is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">unhelpful thinking pattern<\/a> we can get stuck in.<\/p>\n<h2>The meaning of rumination<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Rumination in a sentence, to go by the<\/strong> Cambridge English dictionary, is \u201cthe act of thinking carefully and for a long period about something\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the definition of rumination in psychology is more complex<\/strong> (and also the subject of a vast body of research, as it&#8217;s part of so many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health concerns<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Rumination in psychology<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Psychology sees rumination as connected to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>. Susan Nolen-Hoeksema,\u00a0 an American professor of psychology at Yale University and established researcher of rumination, saw it as&#8211;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">thinking about our feelings<\/a> and problems, \u201crepetitively and passively focusing on the distress, as well as its possible causes and consequences.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other psychologists see it <strong>as a possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">trait<\/a> (a way of thinking we are prone to genetically), as well as an attention issue<\/strong>, where we lack the ability to disengage our attention from our self-obsessed thoughts.<\/p>\n<h2>What do ruminating thoughts sound like?<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\"><strong>Going over something from the past<\/strong><\/a> (if only I had of said that, not gone there, done this)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dwelling on difficulties and things that seem insurmountable<\/strong> (all these things can go wrong, if I do this that will happen)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addicted-to-love.htm\">obsessed with thinking about someone<\/a><\/strong> (he said this, if I do that maybe she will, I wonder if they\u2026.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Or obsessively thinking about something<\/strong> (germs are on this, how many germs do I pass each day\u2026).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Worry vs ruminating<\/h2>\n<p>An American <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17554615\/\">study on undergraduates<\/a> found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worry<\/a> and rumination overlap when it comes to their connection to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression and anxiety<\/a>, but that the two are indeed different.<\/p>\n<p>To compare<strong> worry vs rumination:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>repetitive thinking about uncertainty <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> repetitive thinking of negativity<\/li>\n<li>focuses on the future<em><strong> vs<\/strong><\/em> is more about the past and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> present<\/a><\/li>\n<li>more likely to be about threats <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> rumination is about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/losing-something-you-love.htm\">loss<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_118808\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118808\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-118808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3261773180_27ccde179c-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"rumination and anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3261773180_27ccde179c-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3261773180_27ccde179c.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-118808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/magnetbox\/3261773180\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Ben Tesch<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Ruminating vs problem solving<\/h2>\n<p><em>But aren&#8217;t we ruminating when we are going over a problem we want to solve?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>No.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>When we think of something often<\/strong> in order to find a solution, that\u2019s problem solving. Rumination is thinking for thinking&#8217;s sake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So rumination vs problem solving:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>focuses on what went wrong <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> focuses on what went right as well as wrong<\/li>\n<li>about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">things we can\u2019t control<\/a> <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> about things we can solve<\/li>\n<li>looks for causes and consequences <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> looks for solutions<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> a balance of thoughts including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">positive thinking<\/a><\/li>\n<li>leads to inactivity <em><strong>vs<\/strong> <\/em>leads to action<\/li>\n<li>no end in sight <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> ends when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/new-year-goals.htm\">find an action step forward<\/a><\/li>\n<li>leads to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety or depression<\/a> <em><strong>vs<\/strong><\/em> leads to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\"> decisions<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Don\u2019t we all ruminate now and then?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">Stress<\/a>, for example, can make many of us ruminate. As can difficult experiences. When we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-at-night.htm\">wake up in the night and start thinking<\/a> about what we did wrong in a work presentation, we are ruminating.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Short-lived rumination isn&#8217;t a problem. all the things that could happen or go wrong<\/li>\n<li>increasingly illogic<\/li>\n<li>gives you a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> feeling of fear<\/a><\/li>\n<li>triggers physical symptoms like sweating, heart palpitations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">muscle tension<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rumination and depression<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your rumination is becoming <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>, it can look like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>increasing \u2018doom and gloom\u2019 thoughts<\/li>\n<li>past-based: going over something you did or said in the past<\/li>\n<li>leaves you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a> and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy brained<\/a>\u2019<\/li>\n<li>gives you feelings of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness<\/a><\/li>\n<li>gives physical feelings of heaviness or things like headaches and general malaise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Rumination and mental health disorders and issues<\/h2>\n<p><strong>As well as anxiety and depression, rumination can be a part of the following issues:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\">bulimia nervosa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">binge eating disorder<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>self-harm<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-social-anxiety.htm\">social anxiety<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">substance misuse<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note that rumination not only can be a cause of depression, it can keep you depressed.<\/p>\n<h2>Does rumination really matter?<\/h2>\n<p>As well as the mental health issues above, rumination means that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">less motivation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">unfocused<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\"> distracted<\/a><\/li>\n<li>have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">lower self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li>suffer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationship problems<\/a><\/li>\n<li>feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\">helpless<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Ruminating and physical health<\/h2>\n<p>The thing you ruminate about can be your physical health and illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0022399908000391\"> study on undergraduates at the University of Southern Mississippi<\/a>, for example, found health anxiety (being a hypochondriac) was connected to a tendency to ruminate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And ruminating might actually be contributing to making you sick by affecting your<\/strong> cortisol levels and blood pressure.\u00a0A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17554615\/\">study on anger in children and adolescents<\/a> found that those\u00a0 with a tendency to repeatedly think or talk about an angering event seemed to report more health issues.<\/p>\n<h2>How to get ruminating thinking under control<\/h2>\n<p>So how can you stop the endless rumination hamster wheel?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Learn to hear and recognise your thoughts in the first place.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Often we are so used to the &#8216;radio show&#8217; humming in the background we don&#8217;t really realise the content and need to learn to &#8216;tune in&#8217; and be honest with ourselves. Tools that help here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"> journalling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Replace the \u2018why\u2019 with \u2018how\u2019 or \u2018what\u2019<\/span>.<\/h3>\n<p>Why questions lead to endless evaluation but little action. When we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">use \u2018how\u2019 questions<\/a>, we tend to find ways forward. So \u2018why did I do that\u2019 becomes \u2018how can I do things differently next time?\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assuming<\/a> you know the answers.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Ruminating is often based on the idea that there is a \u2018right and wrong\u2019, or one way to do things, or that each small thing you do is connected to a big thing<\/strong> (if I don\u2019t lose this weight I\u2019ll never have a relationship).<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What if I am wrong about this?<\/li>\n<li>Are there are answers I can\u2019t see?<\/li>\n<li>If let go of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/controlling-behaviours-actually-guilty.htm\"> control<\/a> and stayed open what could happen?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Replace overthinking with wellbeing activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distracting ourselves<\/a> isn&#8217;t always the best idea if we are trying to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\"> hide from processing difficult emotions<\/a>. But with rumination, we aren&#8217;t processing anything and there is little to no chance of advancement. We are stuck in a cycle, so distraction is a positive intervention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course not a negative distraction like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">drinking<\/a> or drugs or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-myths-about-sex-addiction.htm\">casual sex<\/a>. But a positive one, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing activities<\/a> that leave you feeling good.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Learn proper goal setting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes we get stuck ruminating as we simply don&#8217;t really know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">how to set goals<\/a> and achieve them. So we need to learn a model that works, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">&#8216;SMART&#8217; goal setting<\/a>. Suddenly we feel empowered, and we know how to find action steps forward.<\/p>\n<h2>Careening towards depression or anxiety?<\/h2>\n<p>Rumination out of control? Think you might be addicted to negative thinking?
