Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Emotionally unstable personality disorder can mean you struggle more when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/powerlessness-when-world-events-overwhelm.htm\">the world is going through difficult times<\/a>. Or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">life has suddenly become very challenging<\/a>. How do you now if this is you?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you have emotionally unstable personality disorder?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Emotionally unstable personality disorder is a more accurate term for what is commonly called<\/strong> &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>&#8216;, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-relationships.htm\">BPD<\/a>. (There is nothing &#8216;borderline&#8217; about you if you have the disorder, this was a poorly chosen name that has unfortunately stuck around).<\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s main symptom is a constant<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">fear of rejection<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/abandonment-issues.htm\">abandonment.<\/a> These fears result in difficult,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\"> push pull relationships<\/a>, a shifting<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\"> sense of self<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsive behaviours<\/a> that can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">self-harm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Another key factor of BPD is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-emotional-dsyregulation.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">emotional dsyregulation<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 Unlike others, your emotions can go from hot to cold in an instant, and it&#8217;s like you can&#8217;t control the thermostat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>7 Stress responses that point to BPD<\/h2>\n<p><em><span class=\"s1\">Don\u2019t already have a diagnosis of an emotionally unstable personality? The following description of how it affects you during stress might help.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You respond more to stress than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Emotionally unstable personality disorder is often connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma.<\/a>\u00a0And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">childhood adversity affects the development of the brain<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">This could be why if you have this disorder you are way more sensitive to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\"> stress.<\/a>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19837517\/\">A\u00a0 neuro-imagining study <\/a>found that participants with BPD exhibit hyper-responsiveness to stress compared to a control group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. If you don&#8217;t hear from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">\u00a0friends<\/a>, you can worry. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/second-lockdown-stress.htm\">Covid pandemic<\/a> made it clear how much this affects this subset of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">The Asian Journal of Psychiatry recently published a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7179484\/\">case study <\/a><\/span>on the psychological impact of coronavirus outbreak on a BPD client. It\u00a0 concludes that, <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u201cpublic health measures during coronavirus outbreak such as the social distancing and mass indoor quarantine could intensify the feeling of emptiness and aggravate the fear of abandonment among people with BPD&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Stress makes you struggle to understand yourself and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">When we have BPD, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress and anxiety<\/a> have an additional affect of making us less able to &#8216;mentalise&#8217;, which means understanding the mental states of ourselves and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Our minds get caught in cycles of<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\"> black and white, dramatic thinking<\/a>, with little things getting blown out of proportion. One small comment from a partner that we didn&#8217;t do a good job on the dishes? And we wonder if they don&#8217;t like us anymore, or want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">break up<\/a> with us.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Your version of loneliness can feel very extreme.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/noah-buscher-txHP_Xkwjeo-unsplash-400x278.jpg\" alt=\"emotionally unstable personality disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/noah-buscher-txHP_Xkwjeo-unsplash-400x278.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/noah-buscher-txHP_Xkwjeo-unsplash-500x347.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/noah-buscher-txHP_Xkwjeo-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>The less people reach out to us, and the more we struggle to<\/strong> understand why they aren\u2019t and overthink it all, the lonelier we can feel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Loneliness also comes from feeling different, so we can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">feel lonely<\/a> even if we are with family or those we know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Others can then find us<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-intensity-relationships.htm\">too intense<\/a>\u2019 or \u2018dramatic\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You sabotage friendships right when you need to keep them strong. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-am-bored-lockdown-covid.htm\">Boredom<\/a> can lead to being impulsive. And if we have<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"> BPD, then we are prone to being impulsive already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We send that biting text, only to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">regret<\/a> it the moment we realise what we have done Or post that comment declaring we feel we\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">have no real friends<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Facebook<\/a>. Our impulsivity starts to create the very rejection we fear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Or we might be sabotaging by withdrawing.<\/strong> Some people with emotionally unstable personality disorder have a &#8216;quiet&#8217; version. You punish by going cold.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You create conflict out of nowhere sometimes.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s not that you want conflict. But somehow<\/strong> being bored or stressed sees you creating drama before you even realise what you are doing. And once you start, it&#8217;s like you can&#8217;t stop.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Before you know it you are suggesting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a>, even if it&#8217;s not what you want. It&#8217;s just that deep down you worry that the fact they responded to you pushing them away must mean they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leaving-a-relationship.htm\">thinking of leaving you<\/a>, and you are rejecting them first to protect yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But then you find a way to draw them close again. And the BPD conflict cycle<\/strong> begins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">push pull<\/a>, push pull&#8230;.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. You have thoughts of hurting yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If life all gets too much, you might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">tempted to self-harm<\/a>, another major symptom of BPD. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As the book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2816926\/\"><em>Mentalisation-based Treatment for Personality Disorders<\/em><\/a> by Batement and Fonagy points out, \u201cLoss of mentalising [understanding yourself and others] lead to interpersonal and social problems, variability, impulsivity, self-destructive behaviours, and violence\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is it definitely emotionally unstable personality disorder?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Fit most of the above descriptions? Note that this disorder doesn&#8217;t appear out of nowhere. If you recently had <\/strong>a big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">difficult experience<\/a>, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">loss of loved one,<\/a>\u00a0you might simply be experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">emotional shock.<\/a> Hence your unstable behaviours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if you have quite honestly engaged in the sort of behaviours described here since late adolescence<\/strong>, and these sorts of behaviours affect all areas of your life? Then it is worth seeking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">diagnosis<\/a>.
