Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Many talk therapies help by looking at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">past experiences,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">how you personally think and feel<\/a>. But systemic therapy takes a very different approach to helping your feel better about yourself and your life. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is systemic therapy? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Systemic psychotherapy believes we are interconnected to those around us. So any problems we face<\/strong> are shared, and from a flaw within the system, or systems, we live in. This might be our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\">families<\/a>, communities, and social and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">work groups<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">These systems can get stuck in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-schema-psychology.htm\">unhelpful patterns<\/a>, created by the roles they make us play, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">beliefs<\/a> they are based on, and the ways of organising and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">communicating<\/a> they rely on. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So systemic therapy is a talk therapy for individuals, couples, families, groups and organisations that<\/strong> helps them-<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;mobilise the strengths of their relationships so as to make disturbing symptoms unnecessary or less problematic.&#8221; (<span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org.uk\/SpringboardWebApp\/userfiles\/aft\/file\/Research\/Final%20evidence%20base.pdf\">Peter Stratton<\/a>, professor of family therapy at Leeds University).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is systemic therapy a short or long term therapy? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It depends what you and your systemic therapist decide would be best for your particular needs.<\/strong> It could be several sessions, or as little as one or two. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119230\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119230\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mindy-jacobs-hAh4Unn50gk-unsplash-400x263.jpg\" alt=\"systemic therapy\" width=\"400\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mindy-jacobs-hAh4Unn50gk-unsplash-400x263.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mindy-jacobs-hAh4Unn50gk-unsplash-500x329.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mindy-jacobs-hAh4Unn50gk-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-119230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Mindy Jacobs<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And unlike other forms of therapy that<\/strong> involve meeting at least weekly (or more than once a week in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/carl-jung-introduction-jungian-psychology.htm\">Jungian therapy<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">psychoanalysis<\/a>)? Systemic therapy can be biweekly, or even once every four weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How is systemic psychotherapy different than other forms of therapy? <\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. It looks to group over individual experiences. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> We don\u2019t function alone in life.<\/strong>\u00a0If we are having problems, they can be fixed by looking at the dynamics of the groups we are in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Systemic therapy helps you reframe issues from intrapersonal terms (&#8220;my teenage daughter is selfish&#8221;) to interactional or &#8216;relational&#8217; terms (&#8220;we have a pattern of communicating that means she backs down to do her own thing and I feel unheard&#8221;).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It works with present day patterns over past experiences. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychotherapeutic-approaches-the-main-schools-of-thought.htm\">psychotherapeutic approaches<\/a> feel that difficult past experiences become \u2018roots\u2019 that lead to our present-day problems. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-approach.htm\">psychodynamic psychotherapy<\/a> sees you talking about your past each session.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Systemic therapy doesn\u2019t try to<\/strong> find the cause in the past. Instead, it looks to the groups we operate within and believes a pattern of dysfunctional behaviours and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">beliefs<\/a> cause our issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It doesn\u2019t see you as \u2018flawed\u2019 or needing a \u2018diagnosis\u2019. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This places the blame on the individual. Systemic therapy would suggest you are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\">resourceful<\/a>, powerful person. You are just unfortunately operating in a family or group that has unhelpful patterns. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It doesn\u2019t <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame<\/a> any individual in a group, but sees the operating system of the group as the problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. It is circular over linear. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Most types of therapy are linear. They believe in cause and effect over time.<\/strong> So what happened in the past created a result in the present. It sees things as repeating patterns and processes.<\/strong> You have an eating disorder because every time you talk to your parents, you feel you aren\u2019t asked your opinion. So you feel driven to take control by limiting food instead. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. It\u2019s practical over analytical. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Many types of therapy seek to <\/strong><i><strong>understand.<\/strong> <\/i>Why are you are who you are, and what causes you to do things? It\u2019s <i>analytical<\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Systemic therapy seeks to <i>troubleshoot and solve<\/i>.<\/strong> What is causing the group to be stuck? What nudge could create new movement in the ways you relate<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and communicate? It\u2019s <i>practical. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What sort of issues can systemic therapy help with?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org.uk\/SpringboardWebApp\/userfiles\/aft\/file\/NICE\/NICE%20Clinical%20Guidelines%20recommending%20family%202016.pdf\">National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)<\/a> recommends systemic therapy for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-dependency.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">alcohol dependence<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-antisocial-personality-disorder.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">antisocial behaviour<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">conduct disorder (children).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Systemic therapy can also be helpful for things like: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">addictions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">substance abuse <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxiety<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\"> anxiety disorders<\/a>\/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic disorders<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-body-dysmorphic-disorder.htm\">body image issues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\">eating disorders<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">depression<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">low self-esteem <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">relationship problems<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Benefits of systemic therapy &#8211; is it for you?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>How can systemic therapy benefit you, your family, or your group? It&#8217;s a therapy for you if you&#8217;d like to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">see your problems in new and different ways<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">understand different perspectives <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">recognise your strengths and resources and how to use them<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">learn how to work together (if attending as family)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">find ways to deal with difficulties that work for you and those around you <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">identify beneficial changes <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">cope better as a unit.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">Systemic therapy vs family therapy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes you will see systemic therapy being used interchangeably with &#8216;family therapy&#8217;.<\/strong> This is because many family therapists use systemic therapy here in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>It&#8217;s further complicated by the fact that &#8216;systemic therapy&#8217; can sometimes be used as an umbrella term to describe a wide range of therapies<\/strong> that see issues as coming from a &#8216;system&#8217; over individual experience.\u00a0 It can refer<\/span> to therapies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-focused-therapy-eft.htm\">emotion focused couple therapy (EFT)<\/a>, narrative family therapy, and\u00a0 attachment-based family therapy (ABFT).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">In summary,\u00a0 systemic therapy did develop from family therapy and can be a form of family therapy. But there are other forms of family therapy that are different. And systemic therapy is also its own approach that can be used with groups and organisations. If you and your family want to try this approach, look for a <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0\u2018systemic family therapist\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What to look for in a systemic family therapist<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A good systemic therapist doesn\u2019t judge<\/strong> one person as a perpetrator, or point fingers. They look to the system as the root of the issues instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>They do not try to change you or your family.<\/strong> Instead they just nudge, attempting to create movement, and leave you to find and activate the changes you agree on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">ask good questions<\/a> that act as<\/strong> <strong>catalysts<\/strong>, helping your family or group system to capitalise on its strengths, resources, and wisdom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>You feel gently supported by a good systemic therapist, over pushed or led.<\/strong> In fact he or she will sometimes have you so engaged in talking with the members of your group or family you even forget for a moment the therapist is there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Want to try systemic therapy for yourself, your family, or group?
