Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Often feel a letdown, no matter how hard you <\/strong>try? Or has someone insinuated you need to &#8216;grow up&#8217; a bit? Sounds like it&#8217;s time for some personal accountability.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is personal accountability? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Relax. Personal accountability isn&#8217;t about<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">being organised all the time<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-a-perfectionist.htm\">perfect<\/a>, or an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">overachiever<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">It simply means you choose to take responsibility for your words, actions, and behaviours, and for the outcomes that they produce, managing those outcomes if necessary. And that you do what you tell yourself you will do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to sabotage personal accountability <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Not sure if you are or aren\u2019t holding yourself accountable? <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">Consider the following \u2018accountability killers\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Justifying your behaviours. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not that I meant to be late with this outline for the project, it\u2019s just that I have family stress, and the deadline wasn\u2019t realistic. Plus, you were late on the last outline, and things were fine in the end, weren&#8217;t they?&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Why do we justify our lack of accountability? It\u2019s down to what\u2019s known as<\/strong> \u2018cognitive dissonance\u2019. The difference between what we want to be real, and what is real, and in this case the dissonance is with our own self image. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In their book, <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Mistakes-Were-Made-But-Not\/dp\/0544574788\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mistakes Were Made But Not By Me<\/a><\/span>,<\/em> Tavris and Aronson explain,\u201cWhen we make mistakes, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth. And so we create fictions that absolve us of responsibility, restoring our belief that we are smart, moral, and right\u2014a belief that is dumb, immoral, and wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Watch out for:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">softening the facts<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">claiming partial responsibility but not all <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">referring to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">past experience<\/a> that is at fault<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> shifting the target to something more minor and pretending that is the issue<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparing yourself to others<\/a> who were just as lacking in accountability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Talking yourself out of things. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-119273\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mimi-thian-lp1AKIUV3yo-unsplash-1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"personal accountability\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mimi-thian-lp1AKIUV3yo-unsplash-1-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mimi-thian-lp1AKIUV3yo-unsplash-1-500x374.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mimi-thian-lp1AKIUV3yo-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>\u201cI know I said I would put myself out there, and I\u2019m sure she is a nice girl, but I\u2019m so tired with work lately, and it\u2019s so much effort to get to downtown, I\u2019ll date again when this project wraps up\u2026\u201d.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The mind is a fabulous thing. We <\/strong>can use it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">create<\/a> and rationalise any manner of stories if we want to convince ourselves of something. But if you are using it to not be accountable to things you&#8217;ve committed to, you&#8217;re only holding yourself back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Playing the &#8216;poor me&#8217; soundtrack. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>&#8220;It\u2019s not fair, nobody understands, I am only struggling this much because he made me feel so bad in my last performance review, and you know as a child I was always called stupid.&#8221;\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Welcome to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">victim mode<\/a>. It&#8217;s the fastest way to let yourself off the hook.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">But we are all adults here. And adults have personal power. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Yes, sometimes bad things happen to good people. But we are responsible to dust off and find ways forward, instead of sitting on the spot blaming everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The benefits of personal accountability<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In society, groups, and organisations, accountability leads to acceptance, <\/strong>accolades, and avoiding various forms of punishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what about personal accountability? When often, <\/strong>nobody else is even watching? What are the benefits of that?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1.You have more self worth.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Actually, someone is watching. You are. And, consciously or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconsciously<\/a>, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-dysfunctional-behaviour.htm\">actions and behaviours<\/a> are judged and evaluated by yourself, affecting how you think and feel about who you are. Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">self-worth<\/a> is at stake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You then feel a sense of achievement, which of course feels good.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Others trust you more. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If we are always talking about things we want to do, but then never do any of them?<\/strong> Never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">get in shape<\/a>, never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">go after that better job<\/a>, never <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">leave that unhealthy relationship<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or when things go wrong,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-we-put-the-blame-on-others.htm\">blame others<\/a> over take responsibility? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other people notice. It&#8217;s only if we are<\/strong> accountable that people see us as someone they can trust and turn to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. More importantly, you can trust yourself. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>One of the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">killers of self-esteem<\/a>? Not being able to rely on yourself.<\/strong> Not knowing if you will do what you say you will, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/pandemic-mental-health-issues.htm\">how you will react<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">when things go badly<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">When you begin to take accountability, you start being there for yourself. You can relax and trust yourself to not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">sabotage<\/a> but to carry through.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Your relationships improve.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It seems feeling accountable makes for better relating with others.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2005\u00a0<a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ735809\">study<\/a><\/span> on students found that when encouraged to take personal responsibility, their social interactions were better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">3 Ways to boost your accountability\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>So then how to stop<\/strong> letting yourself down all the time?<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. Keep your eyes on your values.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">It\u2019s hard to be accountable if we hate what we are doing in life and it feels like pushing through sand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Your personal values are what you care about when everything else falls away.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">Learning what you value<\/a>, as opposed to what you think you <em>should<\/em> value, can help you narrow in on what you really want in life. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. Work on recognising and changing limiting beliefs. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Always sabotage yourself? <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">Go out drinking<\/a> the night you are to set up your personal website, forget to call that job lead after promising yourself for days you would? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Often it\u2019s because of<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\"> limiting core beliefs<\/a>. If as a child a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult experiences<\/a> meant you decided, for example, \u201cI am <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">not worthy of good things<\/a>\u201d? Then you will unconsciously make decisions to prove it true. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">3. Underpromise and overdeliver.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>A perfect way to sabotage accountability is to<\/strong> always set ourselves up to fail with overextending ourselves. Try the rule of halves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If you can&#8217;t promise yourself to do only half as much, then double your timeframe.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Always overpromising can also come from <\/b>not actually knowing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">how to set achievable goals<\/a>. Also learn a model like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\"> SMART goal setting<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can mental health issues be in the way?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Tried everything but never seem to be able to do what you said you would?<\/strong> There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health issues<\/a> that can make accountability hard.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\"><strong>Depression and anxiety<\/strong> <\/a>make it hard to think straight and stay organised.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Adult ADHD<\/a> <\/strong>means your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">habit of distraction<\/a> leaves you forgetting things or not finishing things.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">Childhood trauma<\/a><\/strong> is a big blocker of accountability.
