Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Love to get fired up and set others straight?<\/strong> And defend what you &#8216;know&#8217; to be true? How useful is your &#8216;righteous indignation&#8217;, and what could make it more worthwhile?<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is righteous indignation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Indignation itself can be a run-of-the-mill<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-conflict-still-fighting.htm\">conflict pattern in relationships<\/a>, a perfect defence against<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shame<\/a>. <i>How dare you accuse me of such things and make me feel small or defective. <\/i>And it often leads to turning the tables and escaping taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-accountability.htm\">responsibility<\/a>. <em>And you&#8217;ve got a nerve to<\/em><i>\u00a0accuse me of that when you did this\u2026.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Righteous indignation in the public realm, <\/strong>on the other hand, becomes about morality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Righteous indignation is anger driven by contempt. We are angry because we are disgusted at something we perceive to be morally incorrect.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And because we bring our sense of morality to our indignation, we can claim it&#8217;s<\/strong> an \u2018acceptable\u2019 form of anger. Even if we are actually using it as rage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Righteous anger, or righteous rage?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anger-issues-signs.htm\">Anger<\/a> is not always a bad thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research connects anger with a desire to change a situation for the better,<\/strong> or what <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1989-38947-001\">psychologists Frijda et al. identify as &#8216;action readiness&#8217;<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s even seen in the biological affects of anger. The left frontal hemisphere of our brain, connected to motivation, is activated, and blood flows to our hands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Without anger we wouldn&#8217;t<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">set boundaries<\/a>, protect ourselves from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">abuse<\/a>, and identify then move towards our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Rage, on the other hand, is<\/strong> unguided anger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-projection-are-you-making-everyone-else-responsible.htm\">projected out onto others<\/a> in destructive and often violent ways. It\u2019s used to belittle and hurt. We don&#8217;t just feel wronged, we want revenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Positive and negative uses of righteous indignation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Without righteous indignation, we wouldn&#8217;t have speeches that have changed the world<\/strong>, like Martin Luther King&#8217;s &#8220;I Have a Dream&#8221;. We wouldn&#8217;t see important changes in the world, like new discussions around<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-mental-health.htm\"> black mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119545\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/362318943_eab605f60b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119545\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/362318943_eab605f60b-400x350.jpg\" alt=\"righteous indignation\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/362318943_eab605f60b-400x350.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/362318943_eab605f60b.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/dave_mckeague\/362318943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">medium as muse<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But then we see <\/strong>religious groups use righteous indignation as a carte blanche to condemn others for things like their sexuality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>And politicians routinely use it to deflect responsibility.<\/strong> <span class=\"s1\">An example is a\u00a0 politician who attacks the other side for some perceived moral flaw, after he is exposed as breaking electoral regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Righteous anger and moral grandiosity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><em><span class=\"s1\">Research also shows that righteous anger\u00a0 can be used to inflate our sense of self and prioritise our own opinions.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><b>In their study <\/b>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/15298868.2017.1419504?needAccess=true&amp;journalCode=psai20\">Self-enhancement, righteous anger, and moral grandiosity<\/a>\u201d researchers had some participants read stories about injustice, and then experience righteous anger. The other group of participants read about grocery shopping, and experienced neutral emotions. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Those who experienced righteous anger were then more interested in maintaining their anger.\u00a0 They chose to again read about injustice when offered a chance to read instead about happy subjects. And they rated themselves high on a moral scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The psychologists concluded that we in fact unconsciously <em>choose<\/em> to maintain our anger<\/strong> in order to allow ourselves to feel &#8216;morally grandiose&#8217; &#8212; aka, superior. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Righteous indignation and grandstanding <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_119517\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119517\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119517\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-neel-fGvXxVxmTi8-unsplash-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"righteous indignation\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-neel-fGvXxVxmTi8-unsplash-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-neel-fGvXxVxmTi8-unsplash-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/andrew-neel-fGvXxVxmTi8-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-119517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Andrew Neel<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In our modern world, righteous indignation is<\/strong> also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">social media<\/a> phenomena.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If used correctly, it can share a useful message and create <\/strong>constructive, necessary conversations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But why does it so often go wrong and lead to <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">a game of attacking others? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">In their new book <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books\/about\/Grandstanding.html?id=C4_UDwAAQBAJ\"><em>Grandstanding &#8211; The Use and Abuse of Moral Talk<\/em><\/a>, authors Justin Tosi<\/span><span class=\"s3\"> and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Brandon Warmke<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>connect it to grandstanding. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Much of our discourse is so awful because it consists of moral grandstanding &#8211; roughly, the use of moral talk for self-promotion\u2026 People need to be able to talk about justice, freedom, equality, and the right thing to do. But we need to do so in ways that do good, and not just make ourselves look good.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to make righteous indignation constructive<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Separate out the rage from the righteousness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are full of rage work with that first. Dump your rage onto<\/strong> the page using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journalling<\/a> then rip up the pages. Rant out loud in the privacy of your own home or punch pillows. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">Use sport<\/a> to move the energy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>If <\/b><strong>rage is a constant issue and might be connected to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">feelings of shame<\/a>, go <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">see a therapist<\/a>. Sometimes we need to get to the root of the rage. It can have nothing at all to do with current events, and everything to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">trauma in childhood<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Use it for positive action over grandstanding.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Remember that anger is powerful and take responsibility for yours.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Anger influences our perceptions, beliefs, ideas, reasoning, and ultimately our choices&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/jenniferlerner\/files\/fuel_in_the_fire_how_anger_impacts_judgment_and_decision_making_0.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The International Handbook of Anger<\/span><\/a>, Litvak et al.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Is your indignation only used to endlessly rant on social media and gain followers and likes?<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you using it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\"> gain approval<\/a> and a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\"> sense of identity<\/a>? Or because you actually want something to change? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What action steps could you take to create positive change in your own unique way? Is that signing a petition? Joining a movement you care about? Creating a work of art? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Think about children.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cWe don\u2019t allow our children to mock, shame, or gang up on people who express moral views that we find offensive.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Tosi and Warmke point out in their book that adults will use abusive behaviour in the name of <\/strong>morality, including threats or inciting suicide. But they would never accept their own child doing the same thing to another child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Is what you are about to say or do in the name of righteous anger something you would be happy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">your own child<\/a> said to another?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Educate yourself. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Righteous indignation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ignorance-is-bliss-racism.htm\">ignorance<\/a> is a bad combination, yet a common one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If we are riding our indignation and come up against an argument we don\u2019t have the answers for<\/strong>, we can move into rage. Which, again, never leads to useful consequences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Don\u2019t assume you know things. Or<\/strong> assume what others are saying on social media or the pastor at your local church says is correct. Do your own research and form your own opinions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Feel angry all the time about everything?
