Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We joke &#8220;I&#8217;m pulling my hair out&#8221;<\/strong> when we&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stressed<\/a>. But hair pulling is actually a real and even dangerous habit for some people, referred to as &#8216;trichotillomania&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is trichotillomania?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Trichotillomania, or \u201ctrich\u201d, for short, is a long-term mental health disorder where you can\u2019t stop yourself from pulling out your hair.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Also referred to as &#8216;hair pulling disorder&#8217;, it usually involves pulling out the hair on your<\/strong> head or your eyebrows and lashes, to the extent you have visible hair loss like a bald patch. But it can also be other forms of hair you are into pulling, including arm and leg hair, your beard or moustache, or even pubic hair. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some people also have post-pulling rituals.<\/strong> This could be rubbing the hair, discarding of it in a special way, or even eating it. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What type of person has trichotillomania? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It most commonly begins in adolescents aged 10 to 13<\/strong> and has been connected to going through puberty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it is also found<\/strong> in younger children, as well as adults who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/stress-management-counselling-london.htm\">been through a stressful experience<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Females are ten times more likely<\/strong> to have this issue than males.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why is hair pulling a big deal?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Very young children might<\/strong> hair pull briefly and then stop. Or you might find you do it very rarely and it&#8217;s manageable. You can work your way through it with distractions, or by telling someone about the urge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if hair pulling is a constant habit\u00a0<\/strong> <strong>and affects your appearance<\/strong>, it can cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/low-self-esteem-counselling-london.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> shame<\/a>, which affects<span class=\"s1\"> things like your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/lying-in-relationships.htm\">relationships<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\"> career<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/student-stress-what-is-it.htm\">school life<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>There can also be serious physical side effects to trichotillomania.<\/strong> You can suffer infections in the long term, and even things like carpal tunnel syndrome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s particularly urgent if the hair is being eaten, which can lead to<\/strong> stomach problems, and in rare cases where a hair ball extends into the intestines, death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why can\u2019t I stop pulling out my hair?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_119666\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/981684608_5cca579042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119666\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/981684608_5cca579042-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"trichotillomania\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/981684608_5cca579042-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/981684608_5cca579042.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119666\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: Randen Pederson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>For a long time it was assumed that everyone with trichotillomania <\/strong>did it because of an uncontrollable urge. The idea was that the urge made you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">tense<\/a> and uncomfortable, so you pulled to feel relief, like a sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">addiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>While for some people this is the case, it&#8217;s certainly not the way it works for all sufferers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Automatic pulling&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>sees you not even realise you are pulling out your hair. It&#8217;s unconscious, like a form of self-soothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Focused pulling&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong>means you consciously pull out your hair to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/stress-management-counselling-london.htm\">deal with stress<\/a> and anxiety or other difficult emotions. Or even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-am-bored-lockdown-covid.htm\">boredom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes trichotillomania is<\/strong> a form of self-harm. You seek the release of physical pain to escape emotional pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or it can be <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-counselling-london-ocd.htm\">connected to obsessive compulsive disorder <\/a><span class=\"s1\">(OCD) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/eating-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">body dysmorphic disorder<\/a>. You can have<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>obsessive thoughts about the way certain hairs look. Perhaps you don&#8217;t like their colour, or have a feeling they are not lined up right or symmetrical enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Related issues and disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you have trichotillomania, you might also have other related habits<\/strong>, such as skin picking, nail biting, lip chewing, or thumb sucking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And it\u2019s related to other mental health problems like:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">anxiety and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/anxiety-counselling-london.htm\">anxiety disorders<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/adhd-child.htm\">ADHD<\/a>)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/autism-support.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">autism spectrum disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">body dysmorphic disorder <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">depression <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What causes trichotillomania? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s thought to be a mix of a genetic predisposition and then environmental factors. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You\u2019d be born <\/strong>with a brain that was more susceptible to trichotillomania. This might<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0mean you were prone to a neurotransmitter imbalance of dopamine and serotonin seen in some cases, similar to those with OCD [1]. You&#8217;ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/psychiatrists-london.htm\">see a psychiatrist<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and get a diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong> In the United States, trichotillomania used to be considered an<\/strong> \u2018impulse control disorder\u2019, alongside things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compulsive-gambling-personality-disorder.htm\">gambling<\/a> and kleptomania. But the <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders<\/a> (DSM-V) now classifies \u2018hair pulling disorder\u2019 under \u2018obsessive compulsive and related disorders\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\">the ICD-11<\/a>\u00a0manual <strong>put out by the World Health Organisation and used in the rest of the world and the UK<\/strong>, hair pulling is also being moved from an impulse control disorder to under \u2018obsessive compulsive or related disorders\u2019. It has a sub-category of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u2018body-focused repetitive behaviour disorders\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">(Learn more about hair pulling\u2019s clinical classifications using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocduk.org\/related-disorders\/trichotillomania\/clinical-classification-of-trichotillomania\/\">the chart put out by the OCD-UK charity<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is the treatment for trichotillomania? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The treatment for hair pulling disorder can involve<\/strong> medication to manage related issues like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\"> anxiety and depression<\/a>. But medication is not considered effective for stopping hair pulling itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Talk therapy is the best treatment.<\/b>\u00a0This can include things like self-awareness training, learning to relax and breathe deeply, and sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/family-therapist-london.htm\">family therapy<\/a>, where your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-talk-to-your-parents-mental-health.htm\">parents learn how to support you<\/a> when you are navigating symptoms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The therapy most commonly offered in the UK is usually a type of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> called &#8216;habit reversal training&#8217;. You&#8217;ll learn how to recognise the thoughts and experiences that trigger you to hair pull, and find other ways of being or occupying yourself so that you don&#8217;t hair pull.
