Darcy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You try so darned hard. And yet here you are, still struggling. Or you have done what you thought would make you feel accomplished, but you don&#8217;t. Why is it you never seem to reach your full potential?<\/p>\n<h2>7 Reasons you never reach your full potential<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You don\u2019t know yourself.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>This can come from a childhood where you only received attention if<\/strong> you were pleasing or \u2018good\u2019. You weren\u2019t allowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">be sad<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/righteous-indignation.htm\">angry<\/a>, unless you wanted to be ignored and made to feel unloveable.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">So you learned to hide \u2018you\u2019 so well that you grew up into an adult who only knows who she or he is in relation to others. Your <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">core self has gone missing<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In her famous book, &#8220;<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Drama-Being-Child-Search-True\/dp\/1860491014\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Drama of Being a Child<\/a>&#8220;, psychotherapist Alice Miller talks of adults who were praised as children only for their achievements. &#8220;They are successful whenever they care to be &#8211; but behind all this lurks depression, a feeling of emptiness and alienation, and a sense that their life has no meaning&#8221;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You are living out someone else\u2019s values.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Your parents taught you that stability and fitting in are what matter. And here you are, with a lovely stable life and healthy position in your community\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">..and you feel flat. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a failure<\/span><\/a>, even though on paper you ticked the boxes you thought you should.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But what are YOUR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">personal values<\/a>? The things that deeply matter to you if everything else falls apart? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If that is actually freedom, adventure, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a>, no wonder you feel so tired. You are chasing someone else&#8217;s dream.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You are driven by negative core beliefs.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">You work so hard, you do all the right things that work for everyone else\u2026 but somehow you just don\u2019t get ahead. These aren\u2019t the thoughts you are aware you have. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> you made as a child then decided were fact. And they are like an embedded computer program running your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious mind<\/a> and actually dictating your decisions.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example, you have the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\"> limiting belief<\/a> you are not worthy of good things. You take a new job, you start doing well, and then you somehow decide to take on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\">volunteer post<\/a> at nights that sees you always tired. So you start doing badly at work, until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\">your boss<\/a> starts to comment and you tell yourself, the thing is, I was never cut out for this job. You can\u2019t see that you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">self-sabotaged<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. You are addicted to comparing yourself to others.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>How would always<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\"> comparing yourself to others<\/a> hold you back? Because if we have this (often addictive) habit it can throw us off track.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We start to think we should want what others want. Or our competitive natur<\/strong>e can have us start doing things that are actually not in line with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">main goals<\/a>, simply so we compare better in future.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You like to feel bad.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>How could anyone like to feel bad?<\/strong> You\u2019d be surprised.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If we grew up in a household that was unstable, or where we were always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">criticised<\/a> or punished for being ourselves, feeling bad can feel like home. It\u2019s our comfort zone. Feeling good is what feels scary and out of control. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Notice the next time something good happens to you<\/strong>. Do you lean in? Or instantly reach for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">alcohol<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeat<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">Space out<\/a> with some TV? You are avoiding feeling good and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">sabotaging<\/a> your full potential.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You are trying to control everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here\u2019s a key thing about people who get ahead in life. Half the time they have other people doing everything for them.<\/p>\n<p>Delegating can only happen if you stop trying to control everything. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/controlling-behaviours-actually-guilty.htm\">Control issues<\/a> waste time and energy and keep you stuck.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. What people don\u2019t recognise about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> issues is that they make everything twice a hard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Depression<\/strong><\/span><\/a> can leave you so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy headed<\/a> everything takes three times as long.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Anxiety<\/strong><\/span> means that your mind is so full of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">crazy-town thoughts<\/a> you forget important things, are late for big meetings, and always seem flustered. As for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">sleeping well<\/a>, forget it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Adult ADHD<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is the greater holder-back of high IQ types. All that smart stuff gone to waste because you can\u2019t finish projects, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-am-bored-lockdown-covid.htm\"> get bored<\/a> and bail right before good things happen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Personality disorders<\/strong><\/span><\/a> mean you waste a lot of time trying to get along with people. Who just never seem to think like you do or understand you. It\u2019s exhausting and takes a lot of time out of your day that could otherwise be used for reaching your full potential.<\/p>\n<h2>If this is true, how can you reach your full potential?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Remember, delegating is key. And sometimes what we need to delegate is figuring it all out ourselves. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>In other words, we need\u00a0<em>support.\u00a0<\/em>Not just<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friend-or-counsellor.htm\">friends<\/a> who tell us what we want to hear, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\"> family members<\/a> who are invested in our decisions and, even if well-meaning, want to sway us in a way that benefits them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Proper support may be a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">coach, a counsellor<\/a>, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">psychotherapist<\/a>.
