Or feel all over the place?<\/strong> Mood disorders are treatable conditions that many of us experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a mood disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mood disorders are pretty much what they sound like. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">They are a group of <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">mental health diagnoses<\/a> were the main issue is changes to how you feel that don&#8217;t match what is going on around you. These make day-to-day life a challenge, or, in a worst case scenario, leave you<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\"> suicidal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Also referred to as<\/strong> \u2018mood affective disorders\u2019, you probably know a few already, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder-in-summer.htm\"> seasonal affective disorder (SAD)<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">The classification of mood affective disorders<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Mood disorders are described and diagnosed in slightly different ways, depending on<\/strong> what country you live in and what diagnostic manual is being used. And the way they are classified has seen a lot of changes of late.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>America has their own manual<\/strong>, the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders&#8221; (DSM)<\/a>. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">In the previous version, the DSM-IV, mood disorders formed their own section. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>The latest version the DSM-V, however, has done away with the section<\/strong>, making separate sections for &#8216;bipolar disorders&#8217; and &#8216;depressive disorders&#8217;. And they have taken out &#8216;mood disorder not otherwise specified&#8217;. This means a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">psychiatrist<\/a> has to slot you under bipolar or depressive, even if your symptoms are ambiguous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The rest of the world tends to use the<\/strong> World Health Organisation&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\">International Classification of Diseases&#8221; (ICD)<\/a>. This is currently in the process of being updated from version ICD-1o to ICD-11, so we may see changes there, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the governing body which puts out the guides for diagnoses that most UK health practitioners use, avoids this confusion entirely. It doesn&#8217;t even use the category &#8216;mood affective disorder&#8217;. It instead chooses to recognise and advise on each mental health condition separately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Common mood disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>There are certainly a lot of mood disorders, if you take into account subsets and variations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can find the full set listed in the ICD-10<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/classifications\/icd\/en\/GRNBOOK.pdf\"> here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>And find out about those listed in America&#8217;s DSM<a href=\"http:\/\/jaapl.org\/content\/42\/2\/182\"> here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And as pointed out above, the exact ways mood affective disorders are classified<\/strong> changes from time to time. But a general list of common disorders could look like:<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Low moods.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The one we all know about is when our moods dive and we are low<\/strong>, or &#8216;depressed mood disorders&#8217;. The ICD classifies these under &#8216;depressive episode&#8217; or &#8216;recurrent depressive disorder&#8217;. They include things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">major depressive disorder (DSM-V) \/ recurrent depressive disorder (ICD-10)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/postnatal-depression-symptoms-treatments.htm\">postnatal depression<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">seasonal affective disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-pmdd.htm\">premenstrual dysphoric disorder<\/a> <\/span>(DSM-V)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Elevated moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Elevated mood disorders see you feel too \u2018high\u2019 on emotions<\/strong>. Cycling moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or we can have moods that go from one end to the other, a \u2018cycling\u2019 mood disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a> (previously called \u2018manic depression\u2019).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Mild but seemingly endless mood issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Sometimes we have mild issues that go on for years<\/strong> and don&#8217;t seem to respond well to treatment, like always feeling slightly miserable.<\/p>\n<p>The ICD-10 groups these under their own category, &#8220;persistent affective mood disorders&#8217;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cyclothymia (long-term mild depression)<\/li>\n<li>dysthymia (long-term mild bipolar disorder).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Substance induced moods.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are also mood<strong> disorders caused by using psychoactive or chemical substances<\/strong>, heavy alcohol use, or during withdrawal from drug use.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">substance\/medication-induced depressive disorder (DSM-V)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">\u00a0mental and behavioural disorders due to use of opioids (ICD-10).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Illness related mood issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And sometimes we have a mood disorder <strong>because we have an illness<\/strong> that has caused it, like brain damage or physical disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">depressive disorder due to another medical condition (DSM-V)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>or &#8216;organic&#8217; mood disorder; organic depression, organic bipolar disorder, etc. (ICD-IV).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Moods issues that don&#8217;t match other categories.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You might have moods that don&#8217;t make sense and cause you problems, but don&#8217;t seem to fit any of the above categories. As stated above, the DSM-V has gotten rid of any section for this, although before they had a category of &#8216;mood disorder not otherwise specified&#8217;. But the ICD-10 still maintains categories of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>other mood affective disorder<\/li>\n<li>unspecified mood affective disorder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why did I end up like this?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s not completely understood, and it depends on the individual.<\/strong> There are genetic, environmental, and even evolutionary possibilities for why you have a mood disorder. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_119808\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4124884226_57820de2b8-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119808\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119808\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4124884226_57820de2b8-1-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"mood disorders\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4124884226_57820de2b8-1-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4124884226_57820de2b8-1.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-119808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wjboyz\/4124884226\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Wenjay Tew<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might be born more predisposed than others to having mood problems.<\/strong> Some of us naturally have a more neurotic personality. This means that if we then cross stressful experiences or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> grow up in a challenging home<\/a> (environments), then that tendency can be triggered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some research shows that mood disorders are part of the way humans have evolved<\/strong> to survive<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16647176\/\"> [1]<\/a>. An example is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder.htm\">seasonal affective disorder<\/a>. If our bodies made us less interested in going out and being social in winter, that meant we would conserve energy, which might have given us a greater chance of staying alive during times of scarcity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And then other research links mood disorders to DNA.<\/strong> In twin studies, for example, if one twin has depression, the other has more than a 75% chance of also having it <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/204631\">[2]<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And depression is linked to having a high percentage of neanderthal DNA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4849557\/\">[3]<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is the recommended treatment?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In some cases medications are prescribed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">But talk therapy can go a long way with many mood disorders. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/cks-uk-only#!scenario\">(NICE) here in the UK recommends<\/a> the following talk therapies for depression:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/interpersonal-therapy.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">interpersonal therapy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li>behavioural activation<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/couples-counselling-london.htm\">couples therapy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/counselling-sessions-what-to-expect.htm\">counselling<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dynamic-interpersonal-therapy.htm\">short-term psychodynamic therapy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And don\u2019t overlook the benefits of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">Healthy eating<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">better sleep hygiene<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\"> exercise<\/a> have all been linked to better moods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And psychological self-care like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">saying no<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">setting firm personal boundaries<\/a> can go a long way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">minimising stress<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An important note about a \u2018mental health diagnosis\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s important to understand what a mental health diagnosis is. They are simply terms created by<\/strong> mental health practitioners to describe groups of people with similar symptoms that meant they are outside the accepted \u2018norm\u2019 of health and behaviour at any give time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A mental health diagnosis is not an illness<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0you can see under a microscope.<\/strong> Nor are they set in stone, as the confusion around mood disorder diagnosis above points too. Diagnostic manuals are reviewed and changed every few years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Why does it matter? Because you are not a diagnosis. You are still<\/strong> you, unique, not exactly like anyone else, with weaknesses but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\">strengths<\/a>. There is no need to let a diagnosis become a box you can\u2019t get out of.
