Physical disability and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> challenges often come hand in hand. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The unseen struggle <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">Physical impairment<\/a> can lead to having to adjust so many practical things <\/strong>about your day-to-day life, that mental health doesn\u2019t even make the list of concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">But according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/statistics\/mental-health-statistics-physical-health-conditions\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> UK\u2019s Mental Health Foundation<\/span><\/a>, &#8220;of the over 15 million people in the UK who do live with a disability or physical health condition, more than 4 million have mental health issues&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By the time you do realise there is an issue and you aren\u2019t coping <\/strong>psychologically, you might feel there is nobody to turn to. You don\u2019t want to \u2018burden\u2019 those you love who are already helping in other ways, or feel nobody will understand. Indeed loved ones might be part of the problem, in that they are pandering to you, or treating you as if you aren&#8217;t still you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But it&#8217;s important, if any of the below<\/strong> mental health conditions sounds a bit too familiar, to seek support.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Physical disability and mental health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">So just how does physical disability affect mental health?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Stress and anxiety. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-120035\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexander-krivitskiy-2vXYyYMcnzI-unsplash-400x350.jpg\" alt=\"physical disability and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexander-krivitskiy-2vXYyYMcnzI-unsplash-400x350.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexander-krivitskiy-2vXYyYMcnzI-unsplash-500x438.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexander-krivitskiy-2vXYyYMcnzI-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Many areas of your life can be affected, from simple daily tasks to things\u00a0your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">career<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money<\/a>.\u00a0 It can feel an endless set of things to worry about, which can cause overwhelm (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>) and negative thinking spirals about the future (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/disability\/bulletins\/disabilitywellbeingandlonelinessuk\/2019\">Office for National Statistics in the UK (ONS) estimates<\/a> that those with a physical disability have a 43% chance of anxiety, compared to the 27% chance of their non-disabled counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Depression. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking spirals<\/a> are about yourself, and you simply can\u2019t see a future ahead worth living? You are experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Grief and bereavement. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Have a deep sense of loss and can\u2019t stop thinking of your life before? You might actually be going through the <a href=\"griefhttps:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/deaing-with-grief.htm\">stages of grief<\/a>, which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/denial-in-psychology.htm\">denial<\/a> and anger. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Relationship problems. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Those around you have to adjust as well, which can not always go smoothly. There can be changes in roles and responsibilities. You might have worries about attracting future relationships, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/she-or-he-doesnt-want-kids.htm\">having a family<\/a>, or about changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-sex-life-normal.htm\">your sex life<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Identity issues. <\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_120021\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120021\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3458879411_315b901a62-230x400.jpg\" alt=\"physical disability and mental health\" width=\"230\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3458879411_315b901a62-230x400.jpg 230w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3458879411_315b901a62.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/furiobrady\/3458879411\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Adrian Brady<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you were always the one in charge, it can be extremely uncomfortable to suddenly have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ask-for-help.htm\">ask for help<\/a> or let others do things for you. Or you might have had your whole life planned, and now things are totally different. You might also experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It doesn&#8217;t help that you can feel others are imposing their view of what a disabled person is on you.\u00a0<\/strong>Writer Lois Kieth, in her book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/encounters-with-strangers-feminism-and-disability\/oclc\/34923256\"><em>Encounters With Strangers: Feminism and Disability<\/em><\/a>, points out:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cDoing disability all day long can be an exhausting process. I don\u2019t mean having an impairment, in my own case not being able to walk. Like most disabled people I can deal with this. I mean having to spend a significant part of each day dealing with a physical world which is historically designed to exclude me and, even more tiring, dealing with other people\u2019s preconceptions and misconceptions about me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Accidents and serious illness can leave you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">PTSD<\/a>, which can mean you are edgy, tense, on guard, and anxious. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Anger problems. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Just<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\"> feel enraged<\/a> that you must experience all this? Find yourself snapping at loved ones, or withdrawing from the world? Anger issues are common.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Of course <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/righteous-indignation.htm\">anger can be a healthy response<\/a> in the face of discrimination or being talked down to, or treated as if you are your disability, instead of someone with a disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Loneliness. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What you are going through is intense, and those around you might not be able to understand, which can lead to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\"> loneliness<\/a> even when surrounded by loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/healthandsocialcare\/disability\/bulletins\/disabilitywellbeingandlonelinessuk\/2019\">Office for National Statistics<\/a> also reports that those who are disabled are almost four times more likely to report feeling lonely &#8216;often or always&#8217; than non-disabled people, particularly in the 16 to 24 year old age group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Substance abuse.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> Stress can lead us to turn to things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">alcohol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/club-drugs-and-therapy.htm\">recreational drugs<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0090-5550.51.3.214\">study<\/a><\/span> published in &#8216;<em>Rehabilitation Psychology&#8217;<\/em> interviewed almost two thousand physically impaired Americans. It found a greater risk of substance disorders, particularly amongst men and men of Hispanic origin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can talk therapy help?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Yes. Therapy can of course help you manage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxiety, stress<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>But therapy can also help you reframe your thinking, so that you can go from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">surviving<\/a> <\/span>to thriving.<\/strong> From seeing yourself as a problem, to seeing the opportunities you now have to be someone you hadn&#8217;t even considered before. And finding<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a style=\"color: #333333; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\">inner resources<\/a> <\/span>and parts of your personality you didn&#8217;t even know were there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Having a disability does not, after all,\u00a0 mean you must be unhappy. In fact the same research by the Office of National Statistics that found higher possible rates of anxiety and loneliness in the physically disabled, didn&#8217;t find a huge discrepancy in reported happiness. While 77% of non-disabled interviewees reported feeling happy the day before, so did 65% of disabled people.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>What sorts of counselling and psychotherapy help physical disability?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recognises the important link<\/strong> between physical disability and mental health and offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg91\/chapter\/Context\">guide to treatment<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> and behavioural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/couples-therapy.htm\">couples therapy<\/a> make their recommendations, along with group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise classes<\/a> tailored for your physical ability, peer support groups, and self help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Other forms of therapy you might find helpful could include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/existential-psychotherapist-london.htm\">Existential therapy<\/a>:<\/span><\/strong> It focuses on finding meaning and purpose, and helping you create a life based on values that are important to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-focused-therapy.htm\">Compassion-focused therapy<\/a>:<\/span><\/strong> A form of therapy that promotes mental and emotional healing through being kinder to yourself and learning to understand others better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/integrative-therapy-london.htm\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Integrative therapy:<\/span><\/strong><\/a> your therapist will have training in several types of talk therapy, and can combine approaches and tools to best suit your needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong>Struggling to navigate life with a disability?
