But now, after such an extended break, children are also returning to a school life that\u2019s going to be different, with social distancing, extra hygiene measures, and restrictions on some activities such as assemblies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All this means it\u2019s more important than ever for parents to<\/strong> do a little planning, preparation and \u2018pep-talking\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em>Here are some ideas on things to consider for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> of your kids and yourself.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>10 Ways to prepare for going back to school in a pandemic<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Focus on facts.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>After months of being told to stay at home, to remain<\/strong> two metres apart from others, and now to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/kids-face-coverings.htm\">wear masks<\/a>, it can feel quite confusing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">anxiety-inducing<\/a> to then have to send your child back to a place that will be teeming with unmasked pupils. Who, in their own class or relevant bubble at least, will not be staying even one metre apart. It\u2019s understandable that your protective instincts might kick in.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">With this in mind, focus on the facts, not your emotional response to whether it\u2019s safe for your child. Write down your specific concerns to reduce any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learned-helplessness.htm\">overwhelm<\/a> and then see what information is out there that might help allay these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irrational-fears.htm\">fears<\/a>, or discuss them with school staff where possible.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Read up on the risk level for children.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t know as much as we\u2019d like about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coronavirus-children-kids.htm\">coronavirus<\/a> yet, <\/strong>but significant evidence suggests that children are not badly affected by it. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecdc.europa.eu\/en\/publications-data\/children-and-school-settings-covid-19-transmission\">the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC) website<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A small proportion (&lt;5%) of overall COVID-19 cases reported in the EU\/EEA and the UK are among children (those aged 18 years and under). When diagnosed with COVID-19, children are much less likely to be hospitalised or have fatal outcomes than adults&#8221;.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_120176\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120176\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/deleece-cook-zzjLGF_6dx4-unsplash-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"back to school\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/deleece-cook-zzjLGF_6dx4-unsplash-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/deleece-cook-zzjLGF_6dx4-unsplash-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/deleece-cook-zzjLGF_6dx4-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/deleece-cook-zzjLGF_6dx4-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Deleece Cook<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Even if you aren\u2019t concerned about your children&#8217;s health, you might be about them passing the virus to family members who are older or vulnerable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every situation like this is individual so there\u2019s no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">right answer<\/a>. But it might be helpful to discuss the risks and pros and cons of your child going back to school with your GP or health professional.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Stay positive in front of your child.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Keep your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worries<\/a> about going back to school out of your child\u2019s earshot as much as possible \u2013 offload to other adults when they are not around. Children can pick up on conversations even when they don\u2019t appear to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">listening<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Listen and take any fears or upset seriously.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Look out for changes in behaviour, and listen for any worries that<\/strong> your child might have about going back to school, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coronavirus-children-kids.htm\">Covid-19<\/a> related or otherwise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Take their views seriously, <\/strong>even if they seem trivial or silly to adults. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-in-kids-news.htm\">The way we respond to our children when our children are distressed<\/a> can make a serious difference to their wellbeing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaacap.org\/article\/S0890-8567(19)30173-X\/fulltext\">2020 study<\/a> <\/span>published in the <em>Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (JAACAP) <\/em>\u00a0taught parents a method to respond to a child&#8217;s anxiety symptoms in a supportive manner, conveying acceptance of the child&#8217;s distress, along with confidence in the child&#8217;s ability to cope. The result? It had as much effect on a child as if the child themselves had attended 12 sessions of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CBT therapy<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. And do learn the signs of child anxiety.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Speaking of anxiety. It\u2019s important to know <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">the difference between normal worry and anxiety<\/a> in children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Normal worry is part of life, but anxiety occurs when worry becomes <\/strong>a constant habit, and starts to impact negatively on your child\u2019s day-to-day living. This could be because it is stopping them sleeping or eating, causing significant changes in behaviour, or pre-occupying their thoughts when they should be concentrating or indeed enjoying something else.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/children-and-young-adults\/advice-for-parents\/anxiety-in-children\/\">NHS site&#8217;s page about child anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Get back to routine sooner rather than later.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_120172\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120172\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/29378666855_8e083dabdb-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"back to school\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/29378666855_8e083dabdb-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/29378666855_8e083dabdb.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120172\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gilles_viart\/29378666855\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Gilles VIART<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Lockdown might well have meant later nights, relaxed mornings, and<\/strong> more ad hoc mealtimes. But that\u2019s not very compatible with the return of alarm clocks and school runs in the mornings! Start introducing a more \u2018school-like\u2019 routine a few days before term begins, and ideally a week in advance.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">For the youngest children especially, a more gradual return to regular sleep and meal times that fit with the school day will help prevent tiredness and make the adjustment easier.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Talk about the ways things will be different when back to school.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Let your child know about any practical changes to their life at school, be it how they\u2019ll get there and back, and what will happen during the day, such as physical distancing measures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Remember to use age appropriate language. For example, \u2018distancing\u2019 won\u2019t mean anything to a small child. And do provide lots of examples and let them know their teacher will explain, too.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Try to highlight what will stay the same over what will change.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Be aware that your child might not be able to do some things they previously enjoyed such as choir, assemblies or extracurricular activities. Be honest with them about this to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/high-expectations.htm\">manage their expectations<\/a>, and acknowledge their disappointment.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And try to focus on the positives, and their favourite things about school that will remain, be it seeing their friends or teacher or a particular lesson they enjoy.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Get younger ones reacquainted with being away from you again.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>If you have a younger child who is prone to separation anxiety, and they\u2019ve spent all or nearly all of their time with you over recent months?<\/strong> Where possible ease them into spending time with someone else for a few spells before they return back to school or nursery, even if, given lockdown rules, that&#8217;s just a close relative or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friend<\/a> they could visit for a few hours.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Communicate with your child\u2019s teacher about any new developments.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Catch up with your child\u2019s teacher or tutor about anything that might affect their behaviour, emotions or learning since they were last at school. This could be a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>, a separation, or something about the pandemic itself, such as having developed a phobia related to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Does you or child need support for anxiety?
