Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes come out of a texting marathon to realise with shock<\/strong> an hour or more has passed? Or feel like your mood depends on hearing that &#8216;ping&#8217; of a return text? Could you be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">addicted to texting<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"s1\">What is &#8216;harmful use&#8217;?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you aren\u2019t sure if you are or aren\u2019t addicted to texting, it can pay to look at <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">the official definitions that apply to abuse of other substances<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\">the ICD-10<\/a>, the diagnostic manual published by the World Health Organisation and used in the UK and Europe, <strong>you have an issue with a substance and can classify for \u2018harmful use\u2019 if, over the last month or on-and-off for a twelve month period, your addictive substance:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">\u201cwas responsible for (or substantially contributed to) physical or psychological harm, including impaired judgement or dysfunctional behaviour\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When it comes to texting, what could that look like?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">sore hands and neck<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">feeling glum<\/a> after texting<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">allowing texting to disrupt bed time and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"> sleep<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">Saying things you regret<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>prioritising texting over things like time with friends and family or work<\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">creating destructive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">drama<\/a> between you and others. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Sound a bit too familiar?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>When overuse becomes addiction<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>As for full blown addiction, the ICD-10 terms this \u2018dependence syndrome\u2019. Again, it\u2019s a habit that<\/strong> has been going on for one full month, or periodically over a year. And it means that you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">have an overwhelming compulsion or desire to engage with the substance<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">can\u2019t really control your partaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">have withdrawal symptoms if you try to reduce or stop your use <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">need more and more of a substance to feel good <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">think about the substance all the time<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s1\">continue using the substance even when it\u2019s clear it&#8217;s harming you and your life. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_120210\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120210\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d-1-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"addicted to texting\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d-1-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/1246825519_dbb931e05d-1.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spine\/1246825519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">rick<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p10\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">How could that translate to texting? For starters,\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>notice if you get a sort spaced out, \u2018high&#8217; feeling when you text.<\/strong> Do you stop noticing everything else and feel \u2018cocooned\u2019 in your text world? Then ask yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Do I feel an overwhelming desire to text?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Can I control myself, or do I text things before I know what I am doing and regret it later? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Do I feel good when texting, but then unhappy, moody, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxious<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panicky<\/a> if someone doesn\u2019t text back? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Do my moods rely on communication by text?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Has my text use risen a lot lately?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Am I constantly thinking about what I will text, or if the other person will text? Constantly waiting for a ping, checking my phone?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p10\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Am I aware that I am over texting someone, making a fool of myself, or saying things I\u2019ll regret? But can\u2019t stop?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Have I even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">destroyed a relationship<\/a> or opportunity because of texting?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But is being addicted to texting a proven issue?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There is as of yet no hard research about the addiction of just<\/strong> texting. But the studies are certainly coming in about the addiction of mobile devices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/08\/23\/most-u-s-teens-who-use-cellphones-do-it-to-pass-time-connect-with-others-learn-new-things\/\">survey <\/a>of over a thousand families in California <strong>found that one in two teens felt addicted to their mobile<\/strong> devices, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">In fact 48% of parents in the study admitted they themselves felt the \u2018need\u2019 to immediately respond to texts, and a shocking 56% admitted to checking their mobiles while driving. Taking risks is a known indicator of addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And women might be more at risk than men.\u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0083558\">Korean study<\/a> of over 500 students created a \u2018smartphone addiction scale\u2019 asking questions about things like whether you bought your smartphone to the toilet with you, or had tried to stop using it so much and failed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It found that females were more likely to be addicted, although<\/strong> that could be because they were also more likely to be aware of their smartphone addiction than their male counterparts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Your brain on texts<\/h2>\n<p><b>Furthermore<\/b><strong>, there are things about our favoured modern method of communication <\/strong>that lend it to being addictive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One is related to our dopamine levels. Dopamine is the<\/strong> neurotransmitter (a chemical messenger in the brain) connected to feelings of pleasure and reward, that then motivate us to continue an activity and seek that feeling of reward again and again.<\/p>\n<p>And as <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/794743\">a review on research around dopamine in drug use and addiction<\/a> points out, <strong>it is not just our dopamine levels increasing that leads to addiction, but how fast they increase.<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;The faster the increases, the more intense the reinforcing <span style=\"color: #333333;\">effects.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The very speed of our favoured modern form of communication, the way we can send and receive messages in a second? And gain someone&#8217;s attention from anywhere? Might lend it to be more addictive than other activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Communication addiction disorder<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>But how can communication be addictive?\u00a0 When it&#8217;s something we all do?<\/strong> One\u00a0answer predates smart phone use.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_120192\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120192\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6406197821_b51cfa5eae-268x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6406197821_b51cfa5eae-268x400.jpg 268w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/6406197821_b51cfa5eae.jpg 335w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/23119666@N03\/6406197821\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Mark Bonica<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Way back in 1999 a paper came out of Cornell University in the States called,<\/strong> \u201cCommunication Addiction Disorder: Concern over Media, Behaviour and Effects&#8221;. It was written to show that the disorder exists, but was rather tongue in cheek, making fun of the idea that people who talk a lot are \u2018addicts\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it drew a serious conclusion &#8211; that often, when we do over-communicate, there can be<\/strong> another issue behind it, much like when we over drink, or over use party drugs. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Mostly, it pointed out, we are lonely. Or we feel pressured by life. Communication is a respite. And it\u2019s the respite, not the communication, that can be addictive.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is supported by much more recent research, such as a<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1043107.pdf\"> 2014 study from Turkey<\/a> that concluded, \u201cloneliness was found to be among the predictors of problematic Internet use.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">5 questions to ask if you are addicted to texting<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">What is it I really want from all this texting? (Love, attention, to feel good, to be heard?)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Is this texting actually making me feel good, or might I feel worse after?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What is the price I am going to pay or what am I giving up in order to indulge in a text-a-thon?
