Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overthinking is exhausting and can mean you<\/strong> both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">sabotage good things<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">avoid making any decisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-019-1647-8\">Research from Harvard medical school<\/a> even<strong> links excessive activity in the brain to a shorter life span, <\/strong>which could be be connected to overthinking, our behaviours, or both.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do I overthink everything?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes, some of us are born with a stronger intellect than others<\/strong>, and are more likely to be thinkers over doers. Nothing problematic about that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But when our thinking comes with an emotional charge, <\/strong>it&#8217;s more than genetics. This looks like thinking that leaves you edgy, moody, or fearful.<\/p>\n<p><em>So what else might be driving your busy mind and how can you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/thought-stopping.htm\">stop overthinking<\/a>?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Stress.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Stress leads to overthinking because our mind is frantically seeking a solution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thankfully, stress is based on real problems, <\/strong>which means there are real solutions. Eventually, the problem sorts itself out, for better or worse, and the overthinking stops.<\/p>\n<p><em>But what if it doesn\u2019t? Your stress might have triggered anxiety.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Anxiety.<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Anxiety is the leading cause of overthinking, with<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/generalised-anxiety-disorder\/overview\/\"> the NHS reporting<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that one in five adults in the UK qualifies as having generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s different than stress as it often doesn\u2019t have a<\/strong> logical cause. And this means the experiences we lived through as children.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Poor parenting.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>As infants and young children it\u2019s essential that we have at least one<\/strong> caregiver who provides unconditional love and safety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Otherwise, we develop<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">coping mechanisms<\/a> that mean we grow up into adults who have \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment<\/a>\u2019. We are constantly scanning others and\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\">trying to be what people around us want<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Trauma and ACEs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>For many of us, our brain is set to anxious because of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACEs include things like an<\/strong> unwell parent, being neglected, or a home with violence. As a child we learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/something-bad-is-going-to-happen.htm\">always be scanning for danger,<\/a> and it can become a lifelong habit if we don&#8217;t seek help.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Those who experienced ongoing traumatic experiences<\/strong> can also end up with \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">complex PTSD<\/a>\u2019. This means you live with constant symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, such as edginess and mood swings.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/abuse-counselling-london.htm\">Child sexual abuse<\/a> often also leads to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-counselling-london.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>, <strong>which causes incessant overthinking about what others think about you and if they will<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">abandon you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to stop overthinking<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If your overthinking is because of stress, it can very much be about gaining the<\/strong> courage to be honest about what is stressing you and then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\"> reaching out for help<\/a>. Friends or colleagues can help you see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">new perspectives<\/a> and find solutions you missed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or professional support, like<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/life-coaching-london.htm\">working with a coach,<\/a> can help you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\"> take clear steps forward<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anxiety, on the other hand, doesn\u2019t have an<\/strong> instant solution. But it can be managed and become far less of a problem using the following tools (which also help stress).<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Mindfulness.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mindfulness is now a mainstream tool quite simply because it<\/strong> works. It helps you recognise that thoughts are just thoughts, often based on a past you can\u2019t change and a future you can\u2019t control. Ask \u2018what\u2019 and \u2018how\u2019 questions of the thoughts that you keep having (why questions are to be avoided, they just create rabbit holes).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is this worry really about?<br \/>\nWhat is the worse thing that can happen here?<\/li>\n<li>How could I get help for this issue?<\/li>\n<li>How likely is this to really happen on a scale of 1 to 5?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. The chair exercise.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is a well-known tool from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gestalt-therapy.htm\"> Gestalt Therapy<\/a>. It sounds odd, but is quite powerful.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Set up two chairs facing each other in a quiet private space.<\/li>\n<li>Clarify the problem you are overthinking. Make each chair one side of the argument (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">I should stay in the relationship, I shouldn\u2019t stay<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Sit on one chair and talk to the other chair from that perspective (I should stay because we share the exact same lifestyle and we have invested so many years).<\/li>\n<li>Switch chairs and speak now from the other side (but he doesn\u2019t support my career and it makes me feel really low, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sex-life-dead.htm\">our sex life is over<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Keep switching chairs seeing where it takes you, not judging what comes up but just speaking as freely as possible and allowing your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious<\/a> to unload.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Breathwork.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Conscious breathing is gaining ground as a mental health tool.<\/strong> Breathing into your diaphragm in counted, measured breaths lowers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress and anxiety<\/a>. They trigger the sympathetic nervous system, meaning you are on a cortisol high and tense. Breathing triggers the opposite, the parasympathetic nervous system, which gives a feeling of calmness.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Consistent exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Exercise is on the NHS list of things to do to counter anxiety. And it&#8217;s hardly surprising.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3632802\/#B56\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">overview of all current research<\/span><\/a> to date on anxiety and exercise shows that it doesn&#8217;t just help by giving us a distraction from thinking (although that bit helps). It does affect both our brain and body in ways that physiologically lower stress and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What types of therapy work for overthinking?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The clear winner here is<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT),<\/a> recommended for anxiety by the NHS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3263389\/\">shown as helpful by a large body of research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CBT is all about helping you gain control of your<\/strong> thinking, and helping you recognise and question your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> and turn them into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">balanced thinking<\/a> that doesn\u2019t throw you into a spiral.<\/p>\n<p>Other useful therapies can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-based-cognitive-therapy-london.htm\">mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-hypnotherapy.htm\">clinical hypnotherapy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need help to stop overthinking controlling your days?
