It\u2019s time to learn about coercive control.<\/p>\n<h2>What is coercive control?<\/h2>\n<p>Coercive control is now legally recognised as a type of abuse.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">It involves someone you are personally connected to engaging in controlling patterns of behaviour that leave you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">feeling afraid<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">dependent<\/a>, trapped, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">alone<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Examples of coercive control<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Monitoring:<\/strong> <\/span>making you tell them where you are all the time, calling you non stop and punishing you if you don\u2019t answer, looking at your social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Threatening:<\/strong><\/span> to break your things, to hurt or even kill your pet or your child, to hurt themselves, to hurt you, or leave you, or ruin you somehow.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Damaging<\/strong>:<\/span> your things, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a>, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">sense of self<\/a>, your friendships, your family relationships, your capacity to earn a living.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Belittling:<\/strong><\/span> putting you down, telling others negative things about you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Isolating:<\/span><\/strong> refusing to let you contact certain people, not letting you go out, cutting you off from or turning you against your family, or turning people you liked against you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Forcing:<\/span> <\/strong>making you do things you don\u2019t want to do, even things that are illegal. How you clean, cook, perform sexually. Taking control of your finances and dictating what you can spend or even what money you have at all.<\/p>\n<h2>But they haven\u2019t physically hurt me<\/h2>\n<p><strong>This is the fine line which sadly means many stay in<\/strong> abusive relationships. And it&#8217;s also the fine line that formerly left abusers to walk free from legal charges against them, only to then end up committing physical harm after all, or, in worse case scenarios, murder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But coercive control is now a recognised crime in the United Kingdom<\/strong>, and has been since December 2015.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And harm is not just physical, it can be psychological. In fact psychological wounds can take far longer to heal and navigate than physical injuries.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Coercive control and the law in the UK<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s legally coercive control and a crime in the UK if:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it&#8217;s happening between you and someone you are personally involved with (a partner, ex-partner, family member, or roommate)<\/li>\n<li>their behaviour has a serious negative effect on you, and they are conscious of this fact<\/li>\n<li>they have left you fearing violence on at least two separate occasions, OR<\/li>\n<li>you have felt ongoing alarm and distress that has substantially affected your ability to cope on a day-to-day basis, such as changing your physical and mental health or social life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[For more information download the guide &#8220;Coercive Control and the Law&#8221; put out by the UK Charity the Rights of Women <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/rightsofwomen.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ROW-%C2%AD-Legal-Guide-Coercive-control-final.pdf\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.]<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can women also use coercive control?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes. Women can also perpetuate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-domestic-violence.htm\">domestic violence<\/a>. But there are more cases <\/strong>of men using coercive control against women\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-120417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/lloyd-jr-5g2FB0rTnAc-unsplash-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"coercive control\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/lloyd-jr-5g2FB0rTnAc-unsplash-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/lloyd-jr-5g2FB0rTnAc-unsplash-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/lloyd-jr-5g2FB0rTnAc-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>chiefly as gender roles already encourage an imbalance of power. A man can demand things like sex, household subservience, and economic control without attracting attention. As Dr. Evan Stark explains in his paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopvaw.org\/uploads\/evan_stark_article_final_100812.pdf\">&#8220;Coercive Control and the Defense of Liberty<\/a>&#8220;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Women can be controlling as well as men. When the offender is a male, however, coercive control exploits and reinforces sexual inequalities in the larger society in ways that make it far more devastating than when women are controlling.<\/span> &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But note that coercive control can be part of ANY relationship\u00a0<\/strong>and is an issue being bought to light in the LGBT+ community. An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/259635232_Coercive_Control_in_Same-Sex_Intimate_Partner_Violence\">Australian study of gay male couples<\/a>, for example, found that rates of coercive violence were similar to those of heteronormative couples.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is coercive control still legal in places like America?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>The law in many countries is or was based on a \u2018violence model\u2019.<\/strong> Charges are possible only if there is obvious violence or threat of violence, and assault is been graded in level of seriousness by the degree of injury imposed or intended. Coercive control manages to slip under the radar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many parts of coercive abuse have also only been seen by the law as illegal if done against a stranger<\/strong>, such as exploiting someone&#8217;s finances, isolating someone socially, or sexual coercion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Coercive control can start slowly, so by the time it is in full swing, you have become so accustomed to it that it is almost normal for you. It can play out largely behind closed doors. You might have a feeling something isn\u2019t right, but then tell yourself you are overreacting. If things continue to get worse, shame might stop you from reaching out for help. You might think it\u2019s all your fault. It goes unreported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Is it coercive control?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">feel ashamed<\/a> of what is happening between you and this person?<\/li>\n<li>Are they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">making decisions<\/a> for you?<br \/>\nHave they slowly but surely cut you off from previous social ties, or ruined your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dysfunctional-family-help.htm\"> relationship with your family<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Do they threaten you in any way, shape, or form?<\/li>\n<li>Do you feel afraid? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">Alone<\/a>? Like you are losing your mind?<\/li>\n<li>Have you changed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\"> the way you parent<\/a>, because you feel you have to protect your children from this person?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want to get away but feel oddly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">dependent<\/a> on them, like you no longer know who you are without them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>If you are answering yes to the above questions<\/strong>, it&#8217;s time to get help.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Why can\u2019t I just walk away?<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cCoercive control targets a victim\u2019s autonomy, equality, liberty, social supports and dignity in ways that compromise the capacity for independent, self-interested decision making vital to escape and effective resistance to abuse.\u201d Dr. Evan Stark<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The very nature of coercive control is that it leaves you confused and unable to assert yourself.
