Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You&#8217;ve read all the articles about how to make working from home a success <\/strong>and you were loving the experience. You&#8217;ve created a routine, worked out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">boundaries<\/a> with your partner who also works at home, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise daily<\/a>, and you &#8216;turn off&#8217; at the end of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But the truth is, you just aren&#8217;t feeling yourself.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What are the new concerns about home-based work that might be affecting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The less talked about challenges of working from home<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">What are the new challenges of working from home we all need to talk about, beyond the obvious?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Loss of identity. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Working in an office, despite its flaws, gave you a<\/strong> strong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity<\/a>. Even if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">some of your colleagues drove you nuts<\/a>, and you loved to complain about the job, you had a clear role, you were part of a team. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-belong.htm\">You belonged<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Working with that same team over video conferencing, although fun at first, fails to<\/strong> provide the same<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-connection-coronavirus.htm\"> connection<\/a>. You can start to feel detached, and less important or relevant, even though you are doing the same job.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/259926661_Knowing_Where_You_Stand_Physical_Isolation_Perceived_Respect_and_Organizational_Identification_Among_Virtual_Employees\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research published in the journal\u00a0<\/span><\/a><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Organisation Science<\/span> <\/em>[1] found that the more we are physically absent from an organisation, the less we feel respected, and the less we identify with the organisation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/j.1748-8583.2010.00137.x\"> other research from Nottingham and Sheffield universities<\/a> [2] found that we begin to identify with our new mode of work instead, of being a teleworker, and start seeing work as more of a transaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Shifting communication. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not everyone communicates well over video, phone, and emails. Personality can be lost.<\/strong> Some people come across as confusing, others as rigid and rude. You can be left second guessing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">anxious<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Professionalism can be lost, too. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">Communicating<\/a> at a distance can create a false sense of safety. You are being more friendly than usual, more intimate, or a colleague is, and you feel you must oblige. Lines can be overstepped. It can feel good at first, but lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">boundary issues<\/a> and anxiety down the line. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. More gossiping and backbiting.<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not having to see the subject of gossip on a daily basis<\/strong> gives some people more courage. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">There can also be a lot of talk against managers and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\"> bosses<\/a>, with nothing coming to a head like it inevitably used to in the office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might feel drawn in to gossip you don\u2019t want to be a part of,<\/strong> or even be the perpetrator, only to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">feel guilty<\/a> later, adding to any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-help-a-friend-with-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> you already had.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. The new blending of work with your personal life.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Suddenly your colleagues are seeing you in your own home. Or calling you for an unplanned<\/strong> emergency Zoom call and catching you without makeup or in your gym kit. It can be a mental adjustment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">And it can work the other way around, too. \u00a0Your partner, also working from home, is now seeing how much your personal assistants do for you, when before she admired how hard you worked. Or your family who always saw you as calm and fun are hearing you take charge and be assertive or even aggressive. You can be left feeling oddly exposed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Social scarcity.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, you are seeing your partner and kids more. But this is one type of social link. It doesn\u2019t necessarily fulfil your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">need for connection<\/a>. You might feel oddly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">lonely<\/a>, and then, worse, guilty for feeling this way when you know you are blessed to have a family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You also quite simply meet less people working from home.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-single-and-mental-health.htm\"> If you are single,<\/a><\/strong> you might really feel the difference, and start to despair you&#8217;ll be alone forever.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.employment-studies.co.uk\/resource\/ies-working-home-wellbeing-survey\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> a survey by the UK&#8217;s Institute for Employment Studies<\/span><\/a>, a third of UK worker&#8217;s feel isolated since working from home during Covid-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Adjustment issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The idea is that you are supposed to revel in your new ability to lounge around on a sofa\u00a0 with a laptop<\/strong>, or to sit in your garden or a park getting things done, looking relaxed and happy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If this simply isn&#8217;t the case? If teleworking makes you<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">feel distracted<\/a> and uncomfortable? You can feel like there is something wrong with you. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Who wants to admit to needing a boring office space with annoying people around them to get work done and feel competent? Instead you struggle on, fighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">feelings of shame<\/a> and dwindling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">self-esteem<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. No audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>&#8220;If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?&#8221;<\/em> Okay, you are not a tree. And you are not falling over, you are sitting doing your work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But if you work from home alone, and lately are having a strange, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dissociation.htm\">dissociated feeling<\/a>, as if you might not really exist in moments? You are not going crazy. You are simply used to an audience. Not everyone thrives on their own.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Group synergy is nothing new, but perhaps forgotten in our modern &#8216;culture of the individual&#8217;. A century ago, way back in 1920, <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/MeadProject\/Allport\/Allport_1920a.html\">a study from Harvard university<\/a> [3] showed that a group of people working independently around a table, not in competition or collaboration with one another, performed better on a wide range of tasks. Coming up with new ideas and using your imagination was better done in isolation, but getting things done benefitted from being with others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What if the truth is that I hate my job? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The structure of the workplace can, for some of us, lead to a numbing out.<\/strong> We get up, do the commute, navigate difficult colleagues, get the work done, and come home too exhausted to think about how life should be different. Or, when those thoughts do arise, we push them away by planning our next nice vacation the job affords. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But now there is new down time.<\/strong> Fancy vacations aren\u2019t as possible as before, nor are nights out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">drinking your worries away<\/a> with friends. There is more time to think, and less ways to hide from yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If the glaring truth coming to light is that you\u2019ve<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">long hated your job<\/a>, it\u2019s worth talking to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">coach or career counsellor<\/a>.
