Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Struggle in relationships, and worried you have an attachment disorder?<\/strong> It\u2019s actually a controversial phrase and diagnosis..<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is attachment disorder?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>&#8216;Attachment disorder&#8217; is not an official mental health diagnosis. <\/strong>Instead, it&#8217;s an umbrella term sometimes used to refer to emotional and behavioural issues in adults, particularly with relating, that link back to lack of care when you were a child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>&#8216;Reactive attachment disorder&#8217;, on the other hand, is a real<\/strong> and quite serious diagnosis. But it&#8217;s only for children, and it is quite different in meaning from \u2018attachment disorder\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All about attachment <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>To understand the use of the term<\/strong> &#8216;attachment disorder&#8217;, it is important to understand what attachment is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">Attachment theory<\/a> was proposed by British child psychiatrist John Bowlby. It suggests that in order to grow up into <\/strong>adults who can form <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">healthy relationships<\/a>, we need to have had at least one caregiver as a young child who we could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">trust<\/a>. They kept us safe, and were reliable and consistent with affection and care. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">If we didn\u2019t get this, if we were passed from caregiver to caregiver? Or our main caregiver was not mentally or physically well, for example, or was simply unable to love a child? Then we end up with what are called \u2018attachment issues\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Our adult relationships end up difficult, and cause emotional or behavioural difficulties.<\/strong> We are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">too anxious<\/a>, and end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">acting impulsively<\/a>. Or we are too detached, or we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">push and pull other people<\/a>. (This is a good thing. In general, disorders can only be managed, not resolved. Attachment issues, on the other hand, can be dealt with.) But in general, symptoms in adults can look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>struggles to attract or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leaving-a-relationship.htm\">stay in a relationship<\/a><\/li>\n<li>anxiety, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/relationship-doubts.htm\">doubt<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">fears<\/a>, and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">unhealthy behaviours<\/a> when you are in one<\/li>\n<li>either overdependent or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-counterdependency.htm\">counterdependent<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">intimacy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connection<\/a> difficulties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The rise of \u2018attachment styles\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Attachment theory has gained in popularity lately with the<\/strong> rebranding of \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-styles.htm\">attachment styles<\/a>\u2019 as a popular tool to discuss relationship issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You might be told you have an \u2018attachment disorder\u2019 if your style is not \u2018secure\u2019<\/strong>. But you don\u2019t have a disorder, just an issue. You need to effectively \u2018relearn\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">how to trust<\/a> and relate, such as by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talk-to-a-therapist.htm\">attending talk therapy<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The different attachment styles <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are four styles of attachment that are often referred to.<\/strong> First put forward in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2F0003-066X.44.4.709\">the research of Mary Ainsworth<\/a>, a colleague of Bowlby, in the 1980s, they have gained easier, more popular names over time. They are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> secure<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">anxious avoidant (&#8216;anxious&#8217;)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> anxious ambivalent (&#8216;dismissive&#8217;)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">disoriented-disorganized attachment\u00a0 (&#8216;disorganised&#8217; or \u2018fearful avoidant\u2019). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Secure attachment<\/span><\/strong> means you can easily trust and love and be loved. You can depend on someone and be depended on. You can have high levels of intimacy but maintain your sense of self. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Anxious attachment<\/span><\/strong> <\/a>means that intimacy makes you, well, anxious. You want to be very close to others, but find they are not as responsive as you would like. This can lead to cycles of dependency, doubt, negativity, and self blame. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Dismissive attachment<\/span> <\/strong>means you are addicted to self sufficiency, and see close relationships as inconsequential. If you are in a relationship, you might regard your partner with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/righteous-indignation.htm\">contempt<\/a>, and rarely show your feelings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Fearful avoidant attachment<\/span><\/strong> style means you desire intimacy and closeness, but get uncomfortable when it comes. You might push your partner away, or let your doubts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">sabotage things<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Attachment disorder in children <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_120643\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/101470232_2756c25aaa-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120643\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/101470232_2756c25aaa-2-400x252.jpg\" alt=\"attachment disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/101470232_2756c25aaa-2-400x252.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/101470232_2756c25aaa-2.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-120643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gerrythomasen\/101470232\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Gerry Thomasen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Attachment disorder in children is a very controversial \u2018diagnosis\u2019, <\/strong>considered pseudoscience. T<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he list of symptoms quoted can be far ranging, and raises concerns because the same symptoms can also be a sign of neglect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">abuse<\/a>, or conduct disorder. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">destructive behaviour <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">dishonesty and lack of conscience <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">attention-getting behaviours like incessant talking <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">poor impulse control <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">cruelty to other children or animals. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It is better practice to only use attachment disorder to describe a child or adolescent engaging in behaviour with the adults around them that isn\u2019t age appropriate.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This could look like an infant not reaching out to an adult when distressed, a young child being overly friendly with strangers, or a teenager pouting and whining. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Note that there have been controversial and dangerous \u2018treatments\u2019 of children<\/strong> with supposed \u2018attachment disorder\u2019, including deaths from \u2018reparenting\u2019 techniques. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1174742\/\">Canadace Newmaker, a 10-year old American<\/a>, died from a &#8216;rebirthing session&#8217; for &#8216;attachment disorder&#8217; that saw her suffocated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And what is reactive attachment disorder? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u2018Reactive attachment disorder of childhood\u2019 is an official diagnosis for children<\/strong> that beings before the age of five.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>According to the World Health Organisation\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\">diagnostic manual the ICD-10<\/a>, it means a child can act socially normal with healthy adults, but can otherwise show: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">mixed and inconsistent social responses that can change from relationship to relationship <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">emotional disturbances when faced with their own or other\u2019s distress, such as not being emotionally responsive, withdrawing, being aggressive, or being fearful and hypervigilant. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Disinhibited attachment disorder <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There is actually one other, less talked about \u2018official\u2019 attachment diagnosis.<\/strong> This is \u2018disinhibited attachment disorder of childhood\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/classifications\/icd\/en\/GRNBOOK.pdf?ua=1\">According to the ICD-10<\/a>, it means a child had several attachment figures in the first five years of life over one reliable one. And they exhibit:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">clinging behaviour as an infant, or attention seeking and being indiscriminately friendly in middle childhood <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">failure to show selective social attachments, instead seeking comfort from unsuitable others.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What do I do if I have attachment issues?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Again, attachment issues come from our formative years as infants and children.
