Darcy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">world is a mess<\/a> and it&#8217;s made you stop caring. About, well\u2026. anything. Is it okay to feel like nothing matters? Or are there times when apathy is a serious red flag? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Define apathy?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Apathy can be defined as a state of indifference and the inability to act.<\/strong> We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">lack motivation<\/a> and also the ability to care that we are unmotivated. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">A<\/span><span class=\"s1\">pathy is also about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-alexithymia.htm\">lack of emotions<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Despite years of research around &#8216;rational choice theory&#8217;, <strong>it turns out that us humans need to feel things to take action<\/strong>. As <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/jenniferlerner\/files\/annual_review_manuscript_june_16_final.final_.pdf\">a research paper from Harvard<\/a> clarifies, &#8220;emotions constitute powerful, pervasive, and predictable drivers of decision making.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is it apathy? Symptoms to look for <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But how can you know it\u2019s actually apathy and not just<\/strong> the \u2018blahs\u2019, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-am-bored-lockdown-covid.htm\">feeling bored<\/a>? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Apathy can affect three areas, that<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16207933\/\">research has defined<\/a> [1] as emotional-affective (how our emotions lead to actions), cognitive (our ability to make plans), and auto-activation or behavioural (our ability to decide to think things through and take action).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">This translates into symptoms like:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">loss of interest in things that used to be important for you<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">negative, pessimistic thoughts <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">setting less goals if any <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">not taking action in any area of your life <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">feelings of hopelessness <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">excessively engaging in mindless habits<\/a> like TV, video games<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">less socially motivated &#8211; not starting conversations or reaching out<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">no longer caring what people think <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feeling so lethargic<\/a> it\u2019s like you can\u2019t act on things<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">letting even important things pass you by.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Many of these can be signs of a bad week, or feeling a bit low. But in such<\/strong> situations, we realise we don\u2019t care as much as usual, and it concerns us.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Apathy is that one step further. We no longer care that we don\u2019t care. It\u2019s like everything is turned off inside.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Related mental health issues and disorders <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Apathy often occurs alongside <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>. And it can be related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you have other symptoms, such as memory problems or physical issues,<\/strong> note that apathy is often a symptom of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-neuropsychiatry.htm\">neuropsychiatric disorders<\/a> like head injuries, Parkinson\u2019s, and dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Apathy or depression?<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_120668\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120668\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120668\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dollar-gill-W8c6-Wk3BBg-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"apathy\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dollar-gill-W8c6-Wk3BBg-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dollar-gill-W8c6-Wk3BBg-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dollar-gill-W8c6-Wk3BBg-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dollar-gill-W8c6-Wk3BBg-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Dollar Gill<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Depression doesn&#8217;t always involve apathy.<\/strong> You might, for example, have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">goals you care about,<\/a> but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-depressed.htm\">be depressed<\/a> due to very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">negative thoughts about your self worth<\/a> or ability to achieve them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And depression often comes with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> that we are flawed in some way. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worry<\/a> what others must think, or see ourselves as a burden.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apathy doesn&#8217;t even care enough<\/strong> to feel ashamed or guilty. And goals seem a waste of time.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to start caring again\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Determine the source, if any. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If there is a source for your apathy, it pays to face it head on. Did you experience a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a> in the past few months? Have you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/losing-something-you-love.htm\">lost something important to you<\/a>, a way of life, a precious object? Or are you finding the state of the world, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/tools-for-troubled-times.htm\">ongoing coronavirus pandemic<\/a>, is wearing you down? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-120667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"stop caring apathy\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/dustin-belt-lg4fM9Y2pGg-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Journal<\/a> about what is upsetting you, and reach out and talk to trusted friends. Are there any things that can be done that can move you forward? Is there a different perspective you could consider? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Make self care a priority. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">Poor sleep<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-food.htm\">bad diet<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">lack of exercise<\/a> have all been connected to apathy. As has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">drug use<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">a hangover<\/a> certainly helps any of us to stop caring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">In what ways are you neglecting yourself? What small changes could you make starting today? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Separate yourself from the apathy. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">Mindfulness<\/a> encourages us to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-listen-to-yourself.htm\">observe our thoughts and feelings<\/a> right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">here and now<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And when we commit to this process, a curious thing<\/strong> happens. We begin to feel the separate \u2018me\u2019 that isn\u2019t at all our thoughts and feelings, but something bigger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gestalt-therapy.htm\">Gestalt therapy<\/a> approach and imagine your apathy is sitting in front of you .What would it look like? What would you like to say to it? How different is it from who you really are?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. And get clearer on who that \u2018you\u2019 is. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes if we stop caring, it comes from a series of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-regretful-bad-choices.htm\">bad life choices<\/a> that leave us mired in a life that actually doesn\u2019t match who we really are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This can even be the case when it feels like our apathy comes from a world gone crazy.<\/strong> The current events around us shines a light on the fact that we are not living our best life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">the things you deeply value<\/a>, when everything falls away? How is your current life not in line with these choices? If you aren\u2019t sure, use a question from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">life coaching<\/a>. \u201cIf you suddenly had all the money you could ever need, how would you live?\u201d What choices would you make? How can you make those choices in your current life, in a different form?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Take action even when you stop caring. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> suggests reversing the pattern of emotions leading to actions. Called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cbt-behavioral-interventions.htm\">behavioural intervention<\/a>&#8216;, it means that if we choose our actions, we choose our moods. We don&#8217;t wait to want to do things or to feel happy doing them. We just go ahead and do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why do I easily stop caring and my friends don\u2019t?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Are you an apathetic mess in the face of the ongoing <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/return-to-normal-anxiety.htm\">Covid-19 pandemic<\/a>? But your friends are doing just fine? Why is it you are more prone to falling into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/cercor\/article\/26\/2\/807\/2367142\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Research<\/span><\/a> from the University of Oxford [2] suggests it might be that your brain is not designed to be efficient. Using brain scans, it showed that connections in the front part of the brains of apathetic people are less effective. You have to use more energy to plan an action, which would lead you to be less enthusiastic and to fall more easily into hopelessness.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>It can also relate to our upbringing. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">Childhood experiences<\/a> might have taught us to fall into hopelessness or to give up on ourselves. It could have been a parent who taught us to be addicted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or it might have been that we experienced<\/strong> neglect or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trauma-therapy-what-works.htm\">trauma<\/a>, which left us with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">core belief<\/a> that we are damaged, hopeless, and don\u2019t deserve good things to happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">Support for when you stop caring about anything<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are really mired in your apathy? Or if you suspect you easily<\/strong> fall into apathy because of unresolved childhood issues?
