Can psychology help you get things done? And what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-overwhelmed-with-life.htm\">mental health<\/a> disorders and issues might be the real problem?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why is it I just can\u2019t move forward? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are actual mental health disorders, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd.htm\">adult ADHD<\/a>, that can stop you from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-case-study.htm\">focussing<\/a> and getting things done. More on those below. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But often it&#8217;s things like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"> poor self-esteem<\/a> and low moods that get in our way. All the productivity hacks in the world go nowhere if we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-not-good-enough.htm\">don\u2019t feel we are good enough<\/a> to do things well, or are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">too depressed to care<\/a>. On the other hand, if <\/span><span class=\"s1\">we waited until we were psychologically balanced and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">happy<\/a> to get anything done, the world would be a very unproductive place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to Get Things Done? 5 Psychology Hacks<\/h2>\n<p><em><span class=\"s1\">So what psychological approaches can help you get things done despite yourself?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Go into the storm, not away from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">It isn\u2019t actually our low moods themselves that leave us distracted, but our desperate desire to avoid them. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">We don&#8217;t even admit we feel sad or angry. We just suddenly find ourselves reading the news, taking an unimportant phone call&#8230;. time passes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The next time you realise you are not getting stuff done, &#8220;stop, drop, and feel.&#8221; Sit as still as you can, breathe deeply, and notice your emotions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Is there <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a>? Frustration? A bit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">anger<\/a>?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Where is the feeling in your body? What colour would you give it?<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">How much of that can you let yourself feel right now, without judging it, reacting to it, or doing anything at all but sitting and feeling? <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">And now you know the feeling you are hiding from, can you work despite it?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. We think nothing matters, so why try? You notice and write down the thought and its opposite, the facts that support both sides, then reach for a more probable and balanced thought. (Give it a try now using our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">article on balanced thoughts<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Once you move a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">negative thought<\/span><\/a> out of the way, you\u2019ll be surprised by the clarity and energy that follows.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Kick the future and the past to the curb.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>We don&#8217;t get things done in the past or the future, but in t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\">he here and now<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Set yourself up for productivity by first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">practising mindfulness<\/a>.\u00a0This can be as simple as five minutes of noticing one thing for each of your senses while deeply breathing,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\"> scanning your body for tension<\/a>, or doing a 20-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Sure that you need to obsessively focus on the future to be inspired and productive? Think again. <a href=\"https:\/\/nyuscholars.nyu.edu\/en\/publications\/positive-fantasies-about-idealized-futures-sap-energy\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A study led by New York University<\/span><\/a> found that positive fantasies about the future actually predict poor achievement, lowering our effort and performance. It&#8217;s as if our brain&#8217;s have &#8216;lived out&#8217; the desired future are no longer bothered to generate energy to go after it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Enlist friends, real and imaginary.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">The real secret of success? A support system. Nobody gets ahead alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your support team doesn\u2019t even have to be real. Think of three people, imaginary, alive, or deceased, you really admire. What would, say, the Queen of Sheba have to say as words of encouragement? If you were actually Martin Scorsese, how would you go about getting this done? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An &#8216;accountability buddy&#8217; can also be useful.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Tell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">a trusted friend<\/a> you are going to do something, and ask them to check in by a certain deadline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Or, yes, consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">coach or counsellor<\/a>. They are trained to help you move forward in life.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. What sorts of things might be littering your mind? <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">Things you said yes to you wanted to say no to\u00a0 (If it\u2019s between disappointing someone or missing an opportunity, is their approval really worth it? Call and cancel).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">People you are upset with. (Write a letter, right now, saying all you need to say. Then rip it up.)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/setting-expectations.htm\">Expectations<\/a> that are way too high and are stressing you out. (Write them all out. What ones can you let go of, right now? Cross them out).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s1\">Things you should have delegated. (It\u2019s not too late. Who else can do it? Email them.)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mistakes you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed about<\/a>. (And aren\u2019t admitting to. Journal about it. If your best friend made the same mistake, would you talk to them about it like you talk to yourself? If not, add some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self-compassion<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What mental health issues and conditions might be the problem? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Nothing works? <\/strong>It is true that mental health issues and disorders take a lot of headspace and energy, and some actually affect our ability to think. This can include: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">Adult ADHD<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong> Can\u2019t finish things despite energetic starts? Don\u2019t focus on important things, but over focus on less important ones? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-am-i-so-distracted.htm\">Distracted<\/a> in a way that affects work,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">relationships<\/a>, and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">your finances<\/a>? It might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-adhd-coach.htm\">adult ADHD<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">Severe depression<\/a>.<\/span> <\/strong>Feel like you are moving through sand? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">Head fuzzy<\/a>, unclear, and any thought you do have \u2018doom and gloom\u2019? Constantly have colds and flu? Have no interest in doing anything? It might be severe depression. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Anxiety disorder.<\/strong><\/span> Can\u2019t focus because you are incredibly worried about your future? Do you feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\">sensations of fear<\/a> shoot thought your body several times a day? Are you thoughts increasingly illogic? Anxiety disorder can be stopping you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/compassion-for-borderline-personality-disorder.htm\">Borderline personality disorder<\/a>.<\/span><\/strong> Is it your emotions that have you too distracted to get anything done?
