But others can\u2019t<\/strong> see it because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\">a learning difference<\/a>? Or does your gifted child struggle in ways hidden by their talents? It\u2019s time to learn about 2e kids.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">What are &#8216;2e kids&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Twice exceptional children, or \u20182e kids\u2019, are outside the norm in two areas <\/strong>for their age range. They are on one hand gifted, but on the other hand have a learning or developmental challenge to deal with.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Unfortunately, one exception can often hide the other, and means<\/strong> your child may not get the support he or she needs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Gifted children can<\/strong> compensate in ways that hide their learning challenges. Or the educators and adults around them are so dazzled by the child&#8217;s smarts, they don&#8217;t even think to ask if the child is struggling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And children with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning differences<\/a> can feel too frustrated or<\/strong> misunderstood to try and their gifts are overlooked. Or they can not be given the opportunity to show their unique genius as it isn&#8217;t covered by their school&#8217;s curriculum.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is &#8216;twice exceptional&#8217; a thing here in the UK?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0&#8216;Twice exceptional&#8217; is a term popular in America and<\/strong> around in educational circles since the 1990s. But in the UK it&#8217;s more commonly called &#8216;<strong>dual exceptionality<\/strong>&#8216; or even &#8216;<strong>multiple exceptionality<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">The <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/potentialplusuk.org\/index.php\/school-advice-sheets\/dual-or-multiple-exceptionality\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">charity Potential Plus UK estimates<\/span> <\/a>that up to 10 per cent of children with high learning potential have a unique educational need. Up to 5 per cent of children identified with learning challenges also have a high learning potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Examples of 2e kids in action<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>An example is a child recognised as extremely gifted, or even burdened with the label <\/strong>\u2018genius\u2019. They are often easily bored, rarely finish what they start, and tend to daydream instead of listen in class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>If they are lucky, they might get recognised as also having<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">attention deficit disorder (ADHD)<\/a> and be offered support. They might be seen as \u2018unintelligent\u2019. Meanwhile, later down the line\u00a0 it\u2019s recognised they are highly gifted with understanding complex issues and explaining concepts.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3829472\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study on children<\/span><\/a> with dyslexia published in\u00a0<em>the Gifted Child Quarterly\u00a0<\/em>found 19 per cent of dyslexic students to be highly gifted in verbal reasoning.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Or perhaps your child is seen as autistic.<\/strong> Their brilliance with building complex structures isn&#8217;t recognised as it&#8217;s not something done in the classroom. They aren\u2019t recognised as actually gifted, or it brushed off as &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-autism-test.htm\">part of their autism<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">How do I know if my child is gifted?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/iq-tests-helpful-or-dangerous.htm\">a high IQ<\/a> doesn\u2019t always equate to excelling at school. Some children who are gifted find <\/strong>traditional ways of learning boring, so \u2018zone out\u2019. They hand in messy, half-hearted assignments. Or their minds might think in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">very creative<\/a>, wide ways that simply don\u2019t match traditional learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And being gifted can take forms other than being intellectual.<\/strong> It can include creativity, perception, and highly attuned motor skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Your child might might:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">come up with ideas easily<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">understand big ideas over details<\/li>\n<li>have an advanced vocabulary even if they hate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">writing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>be able to make or build things other kids can&#8217;t, or tell complex stories, or be otherwise creative<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">or be very good with detail and have an excellent memory<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">tend to learn things faster than other kids, even if they don\u2019t then apply themselves<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">manage to do decently in all areas of learning without trying hard<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">or excel in one thing, like telling stories, building things, music, or maths.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">And how do I know if my child has a learning or developmental issue?<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_120825\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120825\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15993655689_c3c1bea547-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"2e kids\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15993655689_c3c1bea547-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15993655689_c3c1bea547-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/15993655689_c3c1bea547.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-120825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nithiclicks\/15993655689\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Nithi Anand<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>It\u2019s not just issues with reading, writing, or numbers <\/strong>that mean your child struggles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>There can be many other signs, such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">language and communication struggles<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">poor behaviour management<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">being seen as \u2018lazy\u2019 and \u2018different\u2019 to other kids<\/li>\n<li>grades that swing wildly from very good to very bad<\/li>\n<li>struggles with social skills, or a tendency to be withdrawn<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">overwhelmed by sensory input (sounds, colours, smells)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">emotional struggles such as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-in-kids-news.htm\"> anxiety<\/a>, being<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parental-stress.htm\"> easily stressed<\/a>, or often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">feeling sad<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-for-teens.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-confidence-how-much-of-a-problem-is-it-really.htm\">confidence<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">an inability to bounce back from challenges and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">be resilient<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">A brief overview of learning differences and developmental disorders<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dyslexia<\/strong><\/span> is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningdisabilities.org.uk\/learning-disabilities\/a-to-z\/l\/learning-difficulties\"> estimated by the UK\u2019s Mental Health Foundation<\/a> to affect 10 per cent of the population. It affects not just reading, but the ability to receive and retain information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dsycalculia<\/strong><\/span> means a struggle with anything to do with numbers and symbols, like math, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\">time<\/a>, quantities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Dysgraphia<\/span><\/strong> is a disconnect between motor skills and the language centre of the brain. Handwriting can seem hard, as can spelling, and thinking and writing simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Dyspraxia<\/span><\/strong> often comes alongside dyslexia or ADHD. It affects muscle control, meaning poor coordination and spatial awareness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">ADHD<\/span><\/strong>, or \u2018attention deficit hyperactivity disorder\u2019, does not always involve hyperactivity. Its main symptoms are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">lack of focus<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-commitment.htm\">inability to commit to things<\/a> and finish them. While some children are hyper, others are dreamy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-autism-test.htm\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Autism spectrum disorder<\/span><\/strong> <\/a>means your child veers toward rigidity of thought and action and has social differences. Change is not easy for them. Sensory overload can be a problem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They don\u2019t easily read social cues and can be left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-surprising-reasons-feeling-lonely.htm\">lonely<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nobody-understands-me.htm\">misunderstood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Auditory processing disorder<\/span> <\/strong>means your child\u2019s brain interprets sound in a different way to the norm. They might tell the difference between words, and struggle to concentrate with background noise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Non-verbal learning difficulties <\/strong><\/span>can be related to autism. Your child will be clumsy and poorly co-ordinated, and can struggle to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-power-of-body-language.htm\">read body language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other issues that would be included under &#8216;2e kids&#8217; can be<\/strong> being gifted alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive-compulsive disorder<\/a> or something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-neuropsychiatry.htm\">Tourette&#8217;s syndrome<\/a>. The idea is that something blocks their learning and gifts.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">What do I do if I suspect I am the parent of 2e kids?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>If your child\u2019s school is not in agreement, or can not test your child in the<\/strong> time frame that works for you, you can work with a private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-educational-psychologist.htm\">educational psychologist<\/a>. They are trained to test for both giftedness as well as barriers to learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can also be helpful to help your child with opportunities to learn that<\/strong> match their strengths.
