Except&#8230; it wasn&#8217;t. It&#8217;s happening again. And so is your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxiety and stress<\/a>. Why are you feeling so bad? Shouldn&#8217;t you know how to deal by now?<\/p>\n<h3>Second lockdown stress<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Just like this lockdown is in some ways different than the first, so are<\/strong> our reasons to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stressed<\/a>. And there are more things to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">anxious<\/a> about.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1.You actually know what is coming. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>New experiences and not knowing what is <\/strong>coming next are stressful. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">But at least in the last lockdown you could talk yourself out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a> by telling yourself it might not be as bad as you think. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This time, you know what&#8217;s ahead. You can\u2019t pretend it\u2019s<\/strong> romantic to stay at home. As for the virus, there is no pretending it will suddenly disappear, or that a vaccine will save the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. We aren\u2019t all in it together anymore. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The first lockdown was hard, but a bonding experience. All that<\/strong> pot banging and camaraderie. We were all dealing with something new and strange. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Now, it\u2019s a time of division and polarisation.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We can find ourselves in disputes with those we love<\/strong>\u00a0over things like mask use, if the virus is or isn&#8217;t real, and what we should and shouldn&#8217;t obey about lockdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It\u2019s more out of control. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Before, there was still a semblance of belief that governments were<\/strong> informed. Now it\u2019s a clear fact that governments are making good guesses, and still don&#8217;t completely understand the coronavirus. Plus you are being hit by vague, confusing rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">You might feel an anxiety that is less intense than the first lockdown, but more persistent.Things can feel more pointless, more hopeless, than ever before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. And <\/strong>there is a chance <\/span><span class=\"s1\">this is going to keep on happening, that the future is on and off lockdowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. It\u2019s coming alongside flu, colds, and &#8216;SAD&#8217;. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Flu and colds can also affect your mental health. You can feel<\/strong> despondent and low. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">And if you suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/seasonal-affective-disorder.htm\">seasonal affective disorder (SAD),<\/a> this second lockdown coincides with the popular times to have symptoms. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">So it\u2019s not just sitting at home more, it\u2019s sitting at home more right when you already get depression and hate being alone. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Shame and self blame can be the game. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You knew what didn\u2019t work the first time. And you promised yourself you\u2019d be ready<\/strong> just in case it ever happened again. You\u2019d find a countryside getaway! Get into a couple and stop being so single! But here you are, in the same situation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or you didn\u2019t believe it would come back and now you are angry at yourself. How can you be so<\/strong> stupid? You feel angry,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\"> ashamed<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. The kids are at school this time. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Wait, isn\u2019t that a <i>positive? <\/i>Yes. Unless you have any issues <\/strong>the kids helped you avoid facing last lockdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">If you avoided seeing the cracks in your marriage by being focussed on the kids all day, and now you are stuck <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/working-from-home-mental-health.htm\">working at home with your partner<\/a>? Or your kids help you avoid the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a> waiting beneath the surface? With this second lockdown there is no hiding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">So how to deal with lockdown, round two?<\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1. Don\u2019t assume it will be exactly like the last one. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">Assumptions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">fortune telling<\/a> only shut down our mind to new opportunity. You simply don\u2019t know what might happen over the next few months. Good things and surprises can still come your way, even in lockdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">2. Be honest if it&#8217;s not actually lockdown that&#8217;s the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Second lockdown can be the perfect excuse for our low mood when really it&#8217;s that<\/b> we realise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/leave-unhappy-relationship.htm\">we want out of our relationship<\/a>, or to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\"> change job<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/moving-abroad-cause-depression.htm\">move country<\/a>. We won&#8217;t feel better until we admit the real issue.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Lockdown can even be helping you mood, not hindering it. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/lockdown-led-to-happiness-rebound-after-wellbeing-plunged-with-onset-of-pandemic\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study out of Cambridge<\/span><\/a> found that it was the pandemic itself that caused low moods, not having to stay home, which actually saw moods rise as people felt safer. And there was a rise in life satisfaction for the average family, with only top professionals seeing a drop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. You might have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gratitude-tips.htm\">focus on small wins<\/a> on some days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But it&#8217;s<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0a form of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mindfulness-techniques.htm\">mindfulness<\/a>. And mindfulness is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">shown by an extensive body of research<\/a> to have such positive affects as lowering anxiety and improving your attention. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Take it further by starting a<\/strong> mindfulness meditation practise &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">learn how here<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Compare down. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Most of us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">compare \u2018up\u2019<\/a>. We compare ourselves to people who are doing better than us<\/strong> and then wonder why we feel rubbish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It\u2019s acceptable to cut yourself some slack and privately compare down. To notice that you are managing better than others. That it could be far worse. You are still healthy, you have friends, you aren\u2019t living in a shack with twenty other people. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Go for being grumpy.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Repressing how we actually feel just means we end up<\/strong> physically sick with colds and flu, or lashing out at those we love.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It\u2019s not about not being miserable. It&#8217;s about processing and dealing with your misery in a productive and non damaging way. Which means not calling your friends only to moan or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/always-complaining.htm\">complain<\/a>, not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-navigate-conflict.htm\">picking a fight about nothing with your partner<\/a>, and not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/surviving-lockdown-coronavirus.htm\">screaming at your kids<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Instead, try things like<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">journalling with intent<\/a>, short bursts of aggressive exercise like HIIT or boxing, or timed rants, where you set a timer for three minutes and have to scream out all the things annoying you without stopping (you&#8217;ll be amazed how quickly you run out of steam).<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">6. Work on your relationships (or celebrate aloneness!).\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The last lockdown was like a big light exposing the hidden corners of our relationships.<\/strong> We figured out fast who our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">real friends<\/a> were, or if our romance had long term potential.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0238906\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Austrian study<\/span><\/a> found that during the last lockdown, a bad relationship more than doubled your chance of depression symptoms, from 13% up to 35%. And people were found to be happier during lockdown with no relationship at all than a bad one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Your relationships that are still around are<\/strong> likely to last. Why not invest in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">better communication<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-relationships.htm\">connection<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\">7. Get real support this time.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>When you work with a counsellor or psychotherapist, there is no guilt. You are<\/strong> paying them, after all. And there is no worry about upsetting someone. They are impartial. Plus they know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">how to listen<\/a> in a way even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">well-meaning friends<\/a> don&#8217;t, and can help you find answers and ways forward that you&#8217;ll wish you had seen ages ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Ready to stop the stress and start feeling you&#8217;ve got this?
