And wondering if therapy could help?<\/p>\n<h2>Isn\u2019t therapy for when I\u2019m feeling bad?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/ten-myths-about-therapy-counselling.htm\">common misunderstanding about therapy<\/a> that the time to go is when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">our lives are falling apart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While it certainly can be a godsend during difficult moments, <\/strong>the better time to go to therapy is when things are okay, but not quite right. When we are, say, feeling unable to get to where we want.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This way we are less likely to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-nervous-breakdown.htm\">reach a crash point<\/a> or find ourselves in pieces. And if we do face an unforeseen challenge, therapy will mean we are\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">more resilien<\/a>t, and in a better place to handle it.<\/p>\n<h2>Why does feeling successful matter?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If we don\u2019t feel successful, we can experience many<\/strong> mental and emotional side effects, such as;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\">feeling like a failure<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a><\/li>\n<li>worrying we are disappointing others<\/li>\n<li>not liking ourselves<\/li>\n<li>not taking chances but<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\"> staying stuck<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And feeling a success is very much linked to our relationships. If you <\/strong>feel a failure, you can end up with relationship problems because you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">avoid intimacy<\/a> incase people see the \u2018real you\u2019 that you feel is flawed<\/li>\n<li>upset others by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-projecting-feelings.htm\">projecting your frustration onto them<\/a><\/li>\n<li>sabotage relationships because you feel unworthy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0146167218802837\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A study<\/span> <\/a>found that people with low self-esteem sabotage relationships by asking for &#8216;indirect support&#8217;. This means we act sad, sulk, or whine to get the support we need, because we are not confident enough to directly ask for it. Therapy helps you define what success really is.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Many of us are chasing someone else\u2019s idea of success.<\/strong> An idea our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">parents<\/a> or our culture taught us, and we never questioned. Or something our peers or a partner believes and we go along with.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">No wonder it never feels enough. It isn\u2019t anything to do with what we, deep down, believe is success. Therapy helps you figure out who you are outside of the influence of those around you, and what matters to you personally.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You will learn your unique personal values.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>What matters deeply to you when all else falls away?<\/strong> If you found out you had one year left to live, what would you do with your time? Would you still be living up to your partner&#8217;s idea of money and stability, or would you create a charity, or embrace adventure?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The moment you start aligning your choices with your personal values is the moment you start feeling successful. Things feel easier and happier, because you are suddenly enjoying what you are doing and feel like life has purpose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It&#8217;s vastly \u00a0outdated. This comes from the first form of therapy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">psychoanalysis<\/a>, but there have been many other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychotherapeutic-approaches-the-main-schools-of-thought.htm\">schools of therapeutic thought<\/a> since.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many forms of modern therapy, particularly<\/strong> from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-humanistic-approach.htm\"> humanistic school of thought<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/existential-therapy-right-fit.htm\">existential therapy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-transpersonal-therapy.htm\">transpersonal therapy<\/a>, are focussed on helping you recognise your inner resources. You&#8217;ll clarify what you want, what feels meaningful for you, then learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">set and reach goals<\/a> that lead you in that direction.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Talk therapy helps you stop sabotaging.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>There is nothing like having to check in with someone every week to keep you on track.<\/strong> When we know someone is going to ask us how things went, and if we took the steps we said we would? We are far more likely to reach success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More importantly, therapy helps you to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">stop sabotaging<\/a> by helping you to recognise and change the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">limiting beliefs<\/a> that are leading you to sabotage in the first place.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. How to be successful in life? Start saying no.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Do you know the fastest way to feel like a failure? To keep saying yes to things you actually don\u2019t want because you feel like you should, or you don\u2019t want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">let others down<\/a>. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Therapy helps us learn <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">how to effectively say no<\/a>. Now try to do that at<\/strong> the same time you make an important business call. Sound odd? It\u2019s actually kind of like the balancing act you are running all the time if you have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-repressed-emotions.htm\">repressed emotions<\/a> and experiences, which take a lot of bandwidth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No wonder you<\/strong> always<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\"> feel foggy<\/a> and like you can\u2019t think straight. A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/short-term-therapy-vs-long-term-therapy.htm\"> long term therapy<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychodynamic-therapy.htm\">psychodynamic psychotherapy<\/a> can help you process and release such old experiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or, if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety<\/a>, your head will be so filled with<\/strong> negative illogical thoughts it\u2019s hard to focus on what needs to get done.
