A groundbreaking leader in his time, his advice certainly holds strong for today.<\/p>\n<h3>Carl Rogers and client centered therapy<\/h3>\n<p>Carl Rogers developed his client centered (<strong>also called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-person-centred-counselling.htm\">person centered<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;) approach to life and therapy as the result of his studies into the nature of human emotional growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He believed that in order for a person to grow, certain necessary conditions need to surround them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Rogers proposed that all humans are conditioned to strive and become better. So there is no need to prod, motivate, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/giving-advice-in-relationships.htm\">give advice<\/a>, but to merely create the right environment for things to unfold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The right environment means one that involves<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">proper listening<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\">empathy<\/a>, and a belief in the other person&#8217;s potential over<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\"> judgement<\/a>. This is what he termed &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unconditional-positive-regard-what-it-is-and-why-you-need-it.htm\">unconditional positive regard<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h3>How to apply person centered concepts to your election response<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Listen to others.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>And not just what passes as listening in our modern culture. But properly listening. <\/strong>Which means not listening solely as a means of formulating a response, but to reflect our interest and concern. In client centered therapy, &#8220;Attentive listening means giving one&#8217;s total and undivided attention to the other person and tells the other that we are interested and concerned.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #993366;\">With regard to the election, how interested and concerned are we in the opinions of others? And understanding their thoughts or experiences?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Understand others using empathy.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>By creating a brick wall of thoughts and opinions surrounding the election or any other issue<\/strong>, we can block <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">effective communication<\/a> with others or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">damage relationships<\/a>. We are also depriving ourselves of the psychological benefits which come from being inquisitive and open-minded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If we instead approach others with empathy, trying to put ourselves in their shoes and<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a>? And inhabit the frame of reference of the other person in a deep, meaningful way? We not only learn things, we feel better ourselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/26256424_Happiness_Unpacked_Positive_Emotions_Increase_Life_Satisfaction_by_Building_Resilience\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a study on positive emotions<\/span><\/a>, researchers Cohn and Fredrickson found that showing empathy for others actually improves your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">well-being<\/a>, connecting it to being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-resilience.htm\">more resilient<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Learn &#8216;unconditional positive regard&#8217;.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-120971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshua-rodriguez-SbwOToII_4-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshua-rodriguez-SbwOToII_4-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshua-rodriguez-SbwOToII_4-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshua-rodriguez-SbwOToII_4-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joshua-rodriguez-SbwOToII_4-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/strong>The phrase \u2018unconditional positive regard\u2019 is a mouthful, but it&#8217;s rather striking in its significance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It embodies a lack of judgment, a lack of pretext, and a lack of preconceived notions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is a freedom found in the word which allows for someone to simply be\u2026 and to be accepted as a result.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">How accepting are we of people who hold differing political views than us? How much are we willing to let them be, without trying to change them?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>What are the benefits of this approach?<\/h3>\n<p>By embracing Carl Rogers&#8217; theories and client centred therapy, we can experience such benefits as the following.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">feel more connected<\/a>.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div><strong>When we close ranks and become more partisan, we might think that we are enhancing our connection with our own political \u2018tribe.&#8217;<\/strong><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In reality though, we are cutting ourselves off from a wider emotional connection with humanity as a whole, apart from the specifics of the issue at hand. So, what we think of as connecting can often be limiting for our broader emotional health.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. We improve instead of damage our relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>Sometimes individuals who hold hardline views on particular issues tend to elevate these issues over their immediate relationships.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>In these cases, individuals will sometimes prioritise being \u2018right\u2019 over other values such as<\/strong> kindness, gentleness, or humility. When this happens, relationships\u2014and the love and care which comes with them\u2014are often left in the wake.<\/div>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. We feel better.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<div>As stated earlier, assuming an open-minded posture has been shown to be a net positive when it comes to determining our overall psychological health.<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800080;\">While some might argue that rigid thinking on some topics is necessary, the truth is that \u201cwe live not in a settled and finished world, but in one which is going on\u201d (Dewey, 1966).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>So in order to be well-adjusted, we need to be open-minded, adaptive, and willing to change.<\/div>\n<h3>The power of client centered therapy in times of change<\/h3>\n<p><strong>As we learn more and more about psychology, we are learning that these three traits are absolutely transformative for the human condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> In fact Rogers argued that they are not only essential in every effective human interaction, they may be all we need in order to be happy and well connected.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So, as we watch the drama unfold in America, and maybe find ourselves feeling superior<\/strong> in some way, let\u2019s all remember what Carl Rogers would do.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019d seek to listen, understand, and above all, show no judgment whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Interested in trying client centered therapy?
