Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Are &#8216;energy vampires&#8217; really a thing, from the<\/strong> point of view of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difference-between-psychotherapy-and-counselling.htm\">psychotherapy<\/a>? And is the term helpful, or is it possibly dangerous? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is an \u2018energy vampire?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">An \u2018energy vampire\u2019 or \u2018emotional vampire\u2019 isn\u2019t, evidently, a clinical term or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-personality-disorder-diagnosis-helpful-or-a-trap.htm\">diagnosis<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s instead a modern shorthand for someone who leaves you feeling drained and takes but doesn\u2019t give much, if anything, in return. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s certainly a term that has enjoyed popularity, and can be connected to the other popular tendency to label everyone we don\u2019t like a \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-narcissist.htm\">narcissist<\/a>\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">There is something very satisfying in deciding someone is a narcissist or a vampire. We feel lighter, safer, resolved. Of course we do. Suddenly it\u2019s all about them and nothing to do with us. But is it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The real danger of emotional vampires <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><strong>Yes, sometimes someone does a number on us.<\/strong> It happens. Ideally, we learn and move on. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what if it keeps happening to you? And if your first thought every time a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">relationship leaves you tired<\/a> is, &#8220;Ha! They are an energy vampire&#8221;?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">The real danger of a strong belief in energy vampires is that you can use it to blind yourself to yourself.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">If you never see your part, if you always make the other \u2018bad\u2019 and yourself \u2018good\u2019, then you are<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong> claiming<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">victim mentality<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_121014\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121014\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121014\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2920749911_f3c5062477-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"energy vampires\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2920749911_f3c5062477-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/2920749911_f3c5062477.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-121014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wonderferret\/2920749911\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">wonderferret<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">And the more you are in the victim mentality, the more negatively you will view others, in a self perpetuating cycle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/340849015_The_Tendency_to_Feel_Victimized_in_Interpersonal_and_Intergroup_Relationships\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Researchers Rahav Gabay et al. discovered<\/span><\/a> that if you have made victimisation a central part of your identity, you will not only over focus on what has been done against you, you will develop &#8216;moral elitism&#8217;, believing you know better than others. You will also, rather ironically, develop &#8220;a lack of empathy and attentiveness to the suffering of other individuals&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But aren\u2019t there selfish people in the world? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We all, at some point, in one way or another, take more than we give. We are<\/strong> unconsciously or even consciously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-you-be-selfish-and-still-be-a-good-person.htm\">selfish<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">And yes, some people do have less interest in being a good human than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Other people have <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">personality disorders<\/a>, which means they see and experience the world differently than normal. This often includes not understanding social rules and boundaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So how can I be responsible for selfish people?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You aren\u2019t. But you are, as an adult, free to makes choices.<\/strong> <strong>You choose who you spend time with.<\/strong> You can choose to learn from the first time someone uses you and leave you drained, and not let it happen again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In the case of things like <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\">bosses<\/a> where you must know someone, you still decide how much energy you give the other person and, again, what boundaries you do and don\u2019t set. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Of course some of us have unhealthy psychological patterns ourselves, that mean we really struggle to set boundaries. Saying no causes immense fear for us. We might blame it on being &#8216;sensitive&#8217; or an &#8217;empath&#8217;, but this can hide a codependent need to feed into others&#8217; wants and needs to feel valued. Like a plug to a socket, giver to taker, we have the matching issues that leave us entangled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>And in this case what you can choose is to seek support<\/strong> to identify where in childhood these patterns developed, how to overcome them, and\u00a0 how to boundary set.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121015\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121015\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121015\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/285006507_ddb3368dc4-301x400.jpg\" alt=\"emotional vampires\" width=\"301\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/285006507_ddb3368dc4-301x400.jpg 301w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/285006507_ddb3368dc4.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-121015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/drstarbuck\/285006507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" \">Karen<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Ask yourself these important questions<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If your life is an endless entanglement with one \u2018energy vampire\u2019 after another<\/strong>, it might be time to take a good hard look at your choices and ask some brave questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I secretly love the drama?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do all these entanglements give me a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">sense of identity<\/a>? Make me feel interesting? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I have unresolved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult childhood experiences<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\"> trauma<\/a> that mean on a certain level I feel I deserve to suffer? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Did the way I was parented teach me that love was suffering? Or that I had to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\">pleasing<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/generous-person-or-over-giver.htm\">over give<\/a> in order to receive attention? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Who would I actually be if I wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">always a victim<\/a>? Do I even know? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I always going on about my \u2018energy vampire\u2019 experiences, and actually draining people around me myself? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to conserve your energy for you<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So how can you be certain your energy is for you and not leaking out or being taken non stop?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">1<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">. Set boundaries<\/a>. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This means learning how to recognise your own personal needs, and then how to communicate them clearly and firmly and to continue communicating them until they are respected. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">2.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\"> Say no<\/a>. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If we constantly say yes to things we don\u2019t really want to do in order to keep the other person happy, or \u2018keep the peace\u2019? Then no wonder we are drained all the time. Until you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-say-no-more-effectively.htm\">learn to say no<\/a> then you are responsible for being drained. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">3. Change your core beliefs. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-change-your-core-beliefs.htm\">core beliefs<\/a> are the unconscious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\">assumptions<\/a> we make as children we then carry into adulthood and mistake as \u2018fact\u2019. Without realising it, we make all our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">decisions<\/a> based on these beliefs. And if you have a limiting belief, like, say, \u2018I don\u2019t deserve good things\u2019, you will constantly choose to be around others who enforce this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">4. Slow down. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most people who get involved with emotional vampires are the same people who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/always-moving-too-fast-in-a-relationship.htm\">rush into friendships and romantic relationships<\/a>. Or overshare their entire life with a new colleague before learning who they are and if they are a good person to connect with. Relationships are best built slowly. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">5. Deal with unresolved traumas. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Again, all of the above can be really hard to do alone if we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">unresolved trauma<\/a>. Trauma or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">adverse childhood experiences<\/a> can leave us afraid of setting boundaries and saying no, or unable to stop our impulsive need to believe in \u2018soulmates\u2019 and rush into things.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We need help to break the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-a-schema-psychology.htm\">psychological patterning<\/a> we are stuck in. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can therapy help me avoid energy vampires?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes.
