It can help to learn Erikson Theory.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What is Erikson Theory?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u201cErikson Theory\u201d is a set of eight stages of psychosocial development<\/strong>\u00a0seen as essential to becoming a productive and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-wellbeing-test.htm\">well-balanced adult<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Created by developmental psychologist<\/strong> Erik Erikson, these life stages have maintained relevance for over fifty years.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The idea is that each stage presents a challenge to our growth, a battle of two opposites. We need the right support and environment to learn what we need to evolve and win the battle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>A clear example is the first stage we go through as an infant, of<\/strong> \u2018Trust vs Mistrust\u2019.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Either we achieve the growth marker and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\"> trust others<\/a>, or we spend our lives feeling we can&#8217;t have confidence in anyone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is the point of the eight life stages?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>If we achieve a stage&#8217;s goal, we also earn a benefit that Erikson called a \u2018virtue\u2019.<\/strong> He is using the word in the way the Greek poets did, to refer to a strength. So, to again use that first example of \u2018Trust vs Mistrust\u2019, the virtue we gain is \u2018Hope\u2019. If we don\u2019t learn trust, we end up feeling the opposite \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopeless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">If as adults we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/avoidance-coping-depression.htm\">have problems coping<\/a>, the eight life stages can help us see where things went wrong, and where we didn\u2019t get the right environment or support to thrive. From there we can see what we need to work on.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Who was Erik Erikson?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-121037 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/Erik_Erikson.png\" alt=\"Erik Erickson\" width=\"233\" height=\"292\" \/>Erik Erikson was a tireless researcher, committed to<\/strong> <strong>understanding<\/strong>\u00a0 how exactly we become who we are. Even when he was already a well established and respected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/freuds-main-theories-psychoanalysis.htm\">psychoanalyst<\/a> and professor he continued to do field work, such as studying the ways various Native American tribes parented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>His restless pursuit of understanding might have been driven by his own childhood. <\/strong>Raised Jewish and with the name of his mother&#8217;s second husband, he was somehow tall, blonde and blue eyed. Teased, he always had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity issues<\/a>. He learned later in life he was actually the product of an affair his mother had in her first marriage with a non-Jewish Dane.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What are the eight stages of psychological development?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>The eight stages are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Trust vs Mistrust<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Autonomy vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">Shame<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Initiative vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">Guilt<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Industry vs. Inferiority<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Identity vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">Role Confusion<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-intimacy.htm\">Intimacy<\/a> vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">Isolation<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Generativity vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\">Stagnation<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Ego Integrity vs. Despair.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>The stages in detail<\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1.Trust vs. Mistrust.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Infancy (birth to 2 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Hope<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Can I trust this world I find myself in?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> That your parents meet your basic needs, and that your main caregiver, such as your mother, models trustfulness of others and trustworthiness as a person. Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Toddlerhood (2 to 4 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Will<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Is it okay to be me?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> patience and encouragement from the adults around you to explore and learn about your environment. To be allowed to try things for yourself, like washing and dressing yourself, while still having support. Not being left to do things you aren\u2019t capable of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if you don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can end up feeling unable to do things, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed of who you are<\/a>, lesser than, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dependent-personality-disorder.htm\">too dependent on others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">I am hopeless<\/a>, I will never be good at anything, I can\u2019t take care of myself.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Initiative vs. Guilt<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Early Childhood (5 to 8 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Purpose<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Is it okay to do things, act, move?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> To be encouraged to think for yourself. To try to do things even though you feel confused and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilty<\/a>. Develop a sense of judgement and an ability to plan. Take small risks, such as riding a bike without training wheels or crossing the street alone. To not be made to feel silly or annoying for things you want to try.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if you don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can always feel guilty about getting your needs and desires met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> I don\u2019t deserve good things,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-dont-people-like-me.htm\"> nobody really likes me<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Industry vs. Inferiority.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Middle Childhood (9 to 12 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Competency<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Can I really handle this world of other people and things?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> To move out of just playing into actually being able to do projects and use your skills to take things to completion. You learn to have confidence in your skills, and to work alone as well as cooperate with others. You also develop a stronger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/righteous-indignation.htm\">sense of right and wrong<\/a> and learn to respect differences in others. It\u2019s really the era of independence, according to Erikson theory. Identity vs. Role Confusion.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\">Adolescence<\/a> (12 to 19 or longer)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Fidelity<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Who am I, really, and what might I become?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> To make decisions on who you are going to be in the world. Now you are moving away from depending on your parents and realise your life is going to be up to you. You decide on all parts of your identity: your sexual identity, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personal-values-know-yours.htm\">values<\/a>, your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">occupation<\/a>. How can you combine the person you are becoming with the expectations of society? You need to be able to experiment and explore your identities and to make your own choices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if you don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can end up with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">ongoing identity crisis<\/a>. You never know what to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-commitment.htm\">commit to<\/a> or be loyal to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> I am unacceptable as a I am.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Intimacy vs. Isolation.<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Early Adulthood (20-39 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Love<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Can I love others?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs: <\/strong>Erikson theory suggest we\u00a0need to fit in, but we also need to be brave enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-handle-rejection.htm\">overcome rejection<\/a> and be ourselves regardless. We need to make commitments to others, to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">healthy relationships<\/a> where we give and receive, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/friendship-and-love.htm\">friends and partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if you don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can deal with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">constant sense of loneliness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-belong.htm\">feel like an outsider<\/a>. This can mean ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-intrusive-thoughts.htm\">dark thoughts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-so-unloveable.htm\">I am unloveable<\/a>. There is something wrong with me. I am not like the others.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Generativity vs. Stagnation<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Adulthood (40-59 years)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Care<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Can I make my life count?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong>To contribute to society, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">to feel that you life has meaning<\/a>, to feel productive. This doesn\u2019t mean you have to do something huge. It can mean things like taking good care of your family, or participating in your community, or being a good citizen. You need to feel that what you do has value.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if you don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can feel constantly dissatisfied and like you are wasting your life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> life is pointless, nothing I do matters.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. Ego Integrity vs. Despair<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Age:<\/strong> Late Adulthood (60 and over)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Virtue:<\/strong> Wisdom<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><strong>Question:<\/strong> Was who I have been okay?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Needs:<\/strong> To be able to look at who you are are and what you did and feel okay with it. To have the inner strength to contemplate what we learned and attempted and achieved and be at peace with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And if I don\u2019t get that?<\/strong> You can end up<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/12-steps-to-overcoming-bitterness.htm\"> bitter<\/a> and feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-let-down.htm\">disappointed<\/a> and hopeless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Negative belief:<\/strong> Everything was pointless.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">How to use Erikson theory<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Note that these stages were made over 50 years ago, and the age ranges might not be exact to today,<\/strong> where we tend, for example, to leave home and get married later. And different sources will have slightly different age ranges quoted. Human growth is not an exact science.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Nor is the idea to rigorously compare ourselves to this progression of growth, either. Some of us will go through these phases at a different time or several times, such as if we have an ongoing identity crisis. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">The idea is more that they are phases we need to achieve to feel whole.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>So if, for example, you didn\u2019t get to develop trust as a child, you can then, as an adult, go through a period of<\/strong> learning to do so with a therapist, and then a new relationship.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need help with a psychosocial stage you didn&#8217;t succeed at?
