And you<\/strong> tell yourself it&#8217;s just &#8216;one of those things&#8217;? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/living-with-walking-depression.htm\">Mild depression<\/a> can actually be the result of consistent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">habits<\/a> we convince ourselves are no big deal.<\/p>\n<h2>Habits that lead to low moods<\/h2>\n<p>What <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">decisions<\/a> are you mindlessly making that are leaving you low?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Always keeping busy.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Never keep up with all the things you have to do? The second you cross one thing off your list, do you add another?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Busy work can be the perfect way to avoid our feelings<\/strong>. But the longer we avoid them, the bigger they can grow.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">We think we are avoiding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a>, but busy work just means it lasts longer.\u00a0 Stopping and letting ourselves feel the full weight of the emotions we are avoiding can actually mean we move past them into a better headspace.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Avoiding friends.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Aren\u2019t feeling yourself, or have a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">life stress<\/a>? So you think it\u2019s best to avoid your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friends<\/a> until things are better? And the more you avoid them, the more you just can\u2019t be bothered keeping up the connection?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoiding social connections can actually be a warning sign of<\/strong> the onset of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-depressed.htm\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">We can think that our depression makes us lonely, but a<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2922929\/\"> five-year study<\/a> <\/span>showed the reverse. It&#8217;s our loneliness that makes us depressed, and it worsens with every year of perceived self-isolation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Giving up your hobbies.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Don\u2019t have time, what with the new job? Or new relationship? Telling\u00a0 yourself you\u2019ll get back to your beloved hobby another time, in the future?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a well-intentioned but bad tactic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mental wellbeing requires consistent commitment to doing things that fill us up. If you are lucky enough to have<\/strong> a hobby that makes you feel good, that weekly hit of happiness might mean more than you realise to your bigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing picture<\/a>, bringing you energy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\">equilibrium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12889-015-2672-7\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Australian study<\/span><\/a> looked at people whose hobby was either doing art or engaging in art done by others. They found that those who committed at least 100 hours or more a year to the arts scored at least two points higher on a 14 item wellbeing scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Convinced\u00a0 you aren\u2019t an alcoholic?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alcohol is a depressant. And it disrupts sleep.<\/strong> Just one or two glasses a night can mean that over time, we start to experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhaustion<\/a> and low moods.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And depression and alcohol abuse disorder are so interlinked that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21382111\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a review of research studies<\/span> <\/a>on the subject found that the presence of one doubles your chance of having the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Using your computer before bed.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Just checking your emails before bed, that&#8217;s all? And then maybe a bit of Instagram. That turns into fifteen minutes of funny video watching?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Screen time really does have an impact on sleep. And low sleep has an impact on our moods. Being tired at work leads to bad decisions, and being tired around loved ones leads to snapping when we don&#8217;t mean to. And before we know it our life isn&#8217;t going so well.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Staying in your job.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Don&#8217;t hate your job, just find it boring? But tell yourself it pays the bills and you shouldn&#8217;t be so picky?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/british-people-work-days-lifetime-overtime-quit-job-survey-study-a8556146.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">British poll<\/span><\/a> found the average UK worker spends 3,507 days of their life at work. It&#8217;s certainly a lot of time to do something you don&#8217;t really like.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Note if your time outside the job is spent with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">habits of distraction<\/a> like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> drinking<\/a>, staying out late, and casual dating. If you are in a cycle of work misery followed by distraction to compensate, it\u2019s time to question if it\u2019s time to break the cycle and seek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">careers counselling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Making people happy.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Is making others happy is something you worry about? Are you known as a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\"> people pleaser<\/a>? And do you make others happy often at your own expense?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/saying-no.htm\">say yes to things you deep down don\u2019t want to do<\/a><\/li>\n<li>can\u2019t remember the last time you had a day for yourself<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">suffer from exhaustion<\/a><\/li>\n<li>sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">wonder who the real you even is<\/a>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>It might be time to learn about<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependency<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">boundary setting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">8. And you think it\u2019s better not to tell your partner, because you don\u2019t want to stress them out?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem is that secret is stressing <em>you<\/em> out. Even if you don\u2019t<\/strong> think about it often, if you in any way judge yourself for it, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">feel guilty<\/a> about it, then it\u2019s taking up mental and emotional energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you know you are being dishonest with a partner, then<\/strong> deep down you won\u2019t trust yourself. Which will affect your ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\">trust them<\/a>, and indirectly affect your relationship. Which can all make you more vulnerable to other stressors and to falling into low moods.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">9. Not finding the time to exercise and eat well.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Life is too busy? Does having kids or a new business mean your physical health is simply not a priority? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your body is the one thing you can count on to be there every step of your life (in fact it&#8217;s unescapable). And it\u2019s now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/exercise-and-depression-does-it-really-help.htm\">proven that physical health is directly related to mental wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">10. Thinking you don&#8217;t need help in life or for low moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Do everything yourself? See asking for help as a sign of weakness?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask any entrepreneur how they got ahead and in amongst the list will be<\/strong> delegating. Time and energy are not finite resources. Trying to be a superhero is exhausting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And we all also at some point or another need emotional help. We need t<\/strong>o ask a friend or family member to be there for us when we have experienced a loss or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Or we need to gather up our courage and seek<\/strong> unbiased, professional help in the form of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">counsellor or psychotherapis<\/a>t.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a sign of weakness, it&#8217;s a sign of courage and forward thinking and a way to avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/burnout-symptoms-treatment-tips.htm\">burnout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Time to kick low moods to the curb?
