Uncertain if it\u2019s a midlife crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety, or depression<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 18.72px;\">Midlife and mood disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>A midlife crisis is a standalone issue<\/strong>, as are depression and anxiety. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But they can be bedmates.<\/strong> M<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">idlife can involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/death-anxiety-fear-of-death.htm\">difficult realisations about mortality<\/a> and what we haven\u2019t achieved that canlead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">bouts of anxiety<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>So then why does the difference matter? It&#8217;s a question of knowing when to<\/strong> seek support, and of what kind of support will help.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The definition of a midlife crisis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A midlife crisis is really a sort of extended identity crisis, <\/strong>often triggered by a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\"> life change<\/a>. This could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/birthday-blues-milestones-affect-mental-health.htm\">big birthday<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/loss-of-a-loved-one.htm\">loss of a loved one<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">redundancy<\/a>, or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/empty-nest-syndrome-how-to-manage.htm\">kids leaving home<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>We suddenly see ourselves from an all new<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\"> perspective<\/a>&#8212; that of someone whose mortality is looming closer than we thought. What have we really achieved? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">What matters and doesn\u2019t<\/a>? Who do we want to be with the time we have left?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">While <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26347986\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">some researchers challenge that a midlife crisis is an actual phenomenon<\/span><\/a>\u00a0[1] newer research suggests we might even have a genetic tendency for them. British economist David Blanchflower\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s00148-020-00797-z\">studied data from across 145 countries<\/a><\/span> and concluded that both humans and even primates tend to have a happiness low point in life, which in Western countries occurs around aged 47. [2]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Symptoms and signs of a midlife crisis<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There can be positives to midlife. We can make commitments to<\/strong> new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/values-and-beliefs.htm\">values<\/a>, and to finding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/existential-therapy-right-fit.htm\">more meaningful life path<\/a>. But before that, we might have to work through some issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of a midlife crisis can include:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling unfulfilled or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-fear-of-failure.htm\">like a failure <\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-regretful-bad-choices.htm\">regretting<\/a> your life choices and past <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a sense of pointlessness or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">lack of purpose<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">comparing your life<\/a> to that of others or some ideal you feel you\u2019ve missed<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">nostalgia for the past <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">doing things more common in younger people <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">making impulsive decisions or rash ones, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\"> overspending<\/a>, a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\"> breakup<\/a>, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-people-cheat-on-partners.htm\"> affair<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">changing the way you look <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">acting out of character.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is depression?<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_121164\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121164\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121164\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/paola-aguilar-O-FR79xcGh8-unsplash-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"midlife crisis\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/paola-aguilar-O-FR79xcGh8-unsplash-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/paola-aguilar-O-FR79xcGh8-unsplash-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/paola-aguilar-O-FR79xcGh8-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-121164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Paolo Aguilar<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Depression is a mood disorder that <\/strong>can vary in intensity, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\">mild to severe<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">At its root are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cognitive distortions,<\/span><\/a>\u00a0negative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/making-assumptions.htm\">assumptions<\/a> we decide are facts. These will be focused on yourself and the world, and sound like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/black-and-white-thinking-stop-drama-addict.htm\">black and white<\/a>, doom and gloom thoughts. \u201cI am worthless, all I do is cause others problems, life is pointless.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of depression include: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thought<\/a>s about yourself and the world<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a sense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness<\/a> and despair <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhaustion<\/a> even if you sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">changes to eating<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleeping patterns<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy head<\/a> and difficulty thinking straight <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a feeling of heaviness in your body <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">constantly having colds and flus<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">not wanting to do things you usually like <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">withdrawing from seeing your friends <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">possible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">thoughts of hurting yourself<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/managing-suicidal-thoughts.htm\"> taking your life<\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So what\u2019s the difference between depression and a midlife crisis? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Both depression and a midlife crisis can mean you have negative thoughts<\/strong> where you deem yourself a failure. And both can mean your thoughts are obsessed with the past. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If it\u2019s just a midlife crisis, though, your thoughts will romanticise the past and your youth. Depression sees you feel ashamed and useless because of the past. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>They both also concern thinking about yourself a lot, and your place in the world.<\/strong> But a midlife crisis is about who you are. Have you done enough? What is the point of your life? Who do you want to be? Depression is more about what you are &#8211; in this case, from your perspective, useless and a failure. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Depression involves more physical symptoms, and there is a definite difference in energy between the two. With depression, you feel can feel as if invisible sandbags are weighing you down. And anxiety is fear-based while depression is about hopelessness. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The difference is again most clear on an energy level<\/strong>. Anxiety triggers your \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">fight flight or freeze<\/a>\u2019 response, leading to buzzy, almost manic \u2018highs\u2019, which then are followed by a crash when your adrenaline and cortisol runs out.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">Are you a w<\/span>oman over forty with anxiety, assuming it&#8217;s down to a midlife crisis? Not so fast. It&#8217;s important to also talk to your doctor about your hormones. <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Perimenopause often causes anxiety<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can I have a midlife crisis, depression, AND anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Again, yes.<\/strong> <strong>One thing can<\/strong> lead to another, or you can have a mild version of one issue and a more serious case of the other.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Although note it&#8217;s important to not get hung up on the label. If you are not yourself in ways that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">damaging your relationships<\/a>, career, and\/or ability to cope, then seek support regardless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If it\u2019s only a midlife crisis, you will have comparative thoughts<\/strong>\u00a0about how the past was better. You will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">feel stressed<\/a> that you have done enough or been enough. Your symptoms will mostly be impulsive decisions, acting out of character, and feeling like you have to find more meaning in life. You won\u2019t have many physical symptoms. And it might be a sporadic or short experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If it\u2019s only depression, you will have negative thoughts<\/strong> about the past and yourself and feel hopeless. You will physically feel in poor health and very tired. Your symptoms will go on for six weeks or more, if not for months or even years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If it\u2019s just anxiety, your thoughts will be racing and future-focussed<\/strong>, and you will feel fearful. You will physically have signs like muscle tension and headaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I need to seek support?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some people have a mild midlife crisis. They make one<\/strong> silly decision, or have a few weeks or months of being a bit reckless, then get back on track. If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">good friends<\/a> and family to talk to, you might have the support you need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Others have a prolonged midlife crisis that leads to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">low moods<\/a> when they can\u2019t feel that the future has a point, or have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worried thoughts<\/a> about what is next in life. Seeking support can be a very good idea. It can mean your moods and anxious thoughts are less likely to roll into severe depression or anxiety disorder, which are harder to treat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A counsellor or psychotherapist will create a safe, non judgmental and unbiased space<\/strong> you can say anything.
