Or wish you could<\/strong> go back in time and have the life you had?\u00a0Nostalgia has direct implications on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">What is nostalgia?<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Nostalgia is a longing for our past, albeit a possibly romanticised version.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>We can be sentimental for<\/strong> people, experiences, places, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/losing-something-you-love.htm\">things<\/a>, or even for a version of ourselves we once were.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Nostalgia is different from<\/strong> homesickness, where we want to be in another existing space than the one we are in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>And it&#8217;s not the same as fantasy<\/strong>, where we seek to substitute reality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 With nostalgia, we<\/span> know we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-mindfulness.htm\">in the here and now<\/a>. We are just indulging in a trip down memory lane, while wearing our &#8216;rose coloured glasses&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">When being nostalgic is a positive<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">In\u00a0the last century, <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1980-21254-001\">researchers focussed on nostalgia<\/a> as something negative. It was seen as an inability to accept the past or what we\u2019ve lost, and something that stopped us from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/present-moment-secret-better-mood.htm\"> being in the present<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>But a flurry of more recent research now claims nostalgia as a mental health positive.\u00a0<\/strong>The newer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">perspective<\/a> on nostalgia is that it can help us feel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connected<\/a> (we can remember good times with loved ones and feel cared for)<\/li>\n<li>inspired to deal with the present (good things happened in the past, so trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/achieving-goals.htm\">reach our goals<\/a> means they might happen again)<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">like we have a stronger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/a-sense-of-self-who-am-i.htm\">sense of self<\/a> (we are a person connected to a past, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-dont-belong.htm\">who belongs<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Researcher Krystine I. Batch, creator of the \u2019Nostalgia Inventory\u2019, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #333399; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/14780887.2018.1499835\">analysed memories of resistance fighters in WWII<\/a> <\/span>next to current empirical research on the subject. This highlighted how nostalgic memories counteracted<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\"> loneliness<\/a>, supported emotional and cognitive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">coping<\/a>, strengthened social bonds and cultural identity, and even helped with accepting a new homeland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Nostalgia\u2019s dark side<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-121210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brady-rogers-tQDDNrj0XRQ-unsplash-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brady-rogers-tQDDNrj0XRQ-unsplash-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brady-rogers-tQDDNrj0XRQ-unsplash-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brady-rogers-tQDDNrj0XRQ-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/>So where does nostalgia go wrong? It&#8217;s now thought that<\/strong> there is more than one kind of nostalgia, and that not all kinds are helpful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Personal nostalgia is when we miss what<\/strong> we experienced in the past. It\u2019s the type that leaves us connected and inspired to recreate such happy moments in the present and future.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But we can miss things too soon. This is called \u2018anticipatory nostalgia\u2019. We miss and long for something before it\u2019s even over, and it leads to sadness, worry, and anxiety. \u00a0An<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2020.01186\/full#B31\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American study released in 2020<\/span><\/a> shows that, as well as affecting our reaction, poorly timed nostalgia can also affect our ability to learn from our reminiscing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>An example would be when we meet someone we really like, and<\/strong> we already feel<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\"> sadness<\/a> and a sense of longing when we think about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">when the relationship ends<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/330546573_Nostalgia_and_Well-Being_in_Daily_Life_An_Ecological_Validity_Perspective\">2020 study<\/a> published in <em>the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology<\/em> concluded that <strong>nostalgia can also be negative if it\u2019s random and unconscious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Consciously making an effort to recall the past was found to elevate our moods. But everyday moments of nostalgia were found to be more likely to have a negative effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Can&#8217;t stop reminiscing?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Are you the type who has daily random nostalgia? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">Always comparing<\/a> the present unfavourably to the past? Can&#8217;t enjoy it when good things happen because you are so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/worry-and-anxiety-difference.htm\">worried<\/a> about how much you&#8217;ll miss things when it&#8217;s all over?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research and theory aside, you have to look at how nostalgia is making you feel.\u00a0<\/strong>Constantly being caught up in nostalgia that leaves you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-moods-habits.htm\">feeling low<\/a> can be a sign of other issues.<\/p>\n<h2>When it&#8217;s a mental health issue<\/h2>\n<p><em>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">unhealthy thought patterns<\/a> that can be related to, or seem like, a form of nostalgia, but are actually signs of a mental health issue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Rumination<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>sees you unable to stop repetitively focusing on things that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">distress<\/a> you, and trying to figure out possible causes and consequences for them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-depression.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Depression<\/strong><\/span><\/a> can mean we go over the past again and again, judging ourselves as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">unworthy<\/a> and feeling consumed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> and self-hatred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addicted-to-love.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Love and romance addiction<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>can mean we think non stop about a person we met, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/staying-friends-with-an-ex.htm\">an ex<\/a>, to the extent it affects our ability to cope. It can see us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/keeping-secrets-from-family.htm\">hiding things from family<\/a> and friends.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Anxiety<\/strong><\/span><\/a> means we constantly worry about the future in a way that makes us feel<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-of-fear.htm\"> fearful<\/a>, and becomes increasingly illogic.
