It\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">not an easy time in the world<\/a>, and if this is combining with personal problems, it can just feel too much.<\/p>\n<h3>7 Things to do when you feel like giving up<\/h3>\n<p>How can you keep going when it feels too hard?<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Bare bones things.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Usually the idea is that putting things off just creates<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">stress<\/a>. \u201cWhy put off to tomorrow what you can do today\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> But when we are overwhelmed, trying to keep up appearances is just too much to ask for. If it can wait, let it.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Do this:<\/strong> Put your schedule down to only necessities. Cancel the Zoom call, forget about working on your side hustle today.\u00a0 Get your work done, feed yourself, make it through the day, and give yourself credit for that.\u00a0 Just for today, let it be enough.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Remember that you are not your thoughts.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>So apparently, according to the radio broadcast of your mind, you are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">not good enough<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feel-like-a-failure.htm\">failure<\/a>, weak, useless, you mess everything up, you might as well just give up\u2026. You get the picture.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The thing is these are just thoughts, not facts. And these thoughts are not even who you are.\u00a0 If you were to turn the radio on and hear a talk show, would you take it all as true? The one behind the chatter and judgements. And the best thing for this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-the-brain.htm\">mindfulness meditation<\/a>, a tool <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\">now used by many talk therapists<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Find a quiet spot, sit very still, and \u2018tune in\u2019 to the radio of your mind. Hear each thought, thank it for &#8216;sharing&#8217;, then imagine it floating off, like a cloud. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Then ask yourself, who is it \u2018listening\u2019 to these thoughts? See if you can \u2018sense\u2019 the part of you watching you listen to these thoughts. This \u2018watcher\u2019 is you, without all the programming.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">analysis of current research on mindfulness<\/span>\u00a0looking at data from over 19 studies, it was concluded that it was indeed an effective way to reduce psychological distress in working adults. [1]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Avoid \u2018those\u2019 types of friends.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>We all know that friend who never \u2018gets\u2019 it.<\/strong> <strong>The one who, every time we try talk to them when we are feeling lost<\/strong>, brushes us off with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/benefits-of-positive-thinking.htm\">platitudes<\/a>. Or changes the conversation to tell their matching story, making it a competition, instead of even remotely<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\"> listening<\/a>. But we can\u2019t think of anyone else to call. Or, deep down, we even call them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">sabotage our mental wellbeing<\/a>\u00a0and punish ourselves further.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Talking to the wrong person when we are feeling very fragile is extremely toxic because it leaves us feeling alone and misunderstood. It can push us from feeling hopeless to feeling suicidal.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Do this:<\/strong> It would be better to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-helpline.htm\">call a helpline<\/a> if you feel like giving up. The idea is admittedly intimidating at first, but the people on the other end know how to listen. Other things that can help include:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>writing letters as if you are talking to a good friend<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>going on to mental health forums and chatting with others who &#8216;get&#8217; depression<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>talking out loud to \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spirituality-and-mental-health.htm\">God\u2019 or your version of a higher power<\/a>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Side note &#8211; those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">friends aren\u2019t bad people<\/a>. They just don\u2019t know any better. Not everyone is good at being supportive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">Try not to push them away entirely<\/a>, which will only make you feel worse.]<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Talk yourself through it.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s funny how we can so easily support friends or even acquaintances<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleagues<\/a> through a crisis with words of support. This can work best if you can talk out loud, but if you don\u2019t have the privacy, talk to yourself in your head. It\u2019s as if you are now two people, and the \u2018friend to all\u2019 part is talking to the \u2018losing the plot today\u2019 part. \u201cYou can do this. You have gotten through this before, you can get through today. And you are still here, still trying, that is what counts.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">This is the art of <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self compassion<\/a>. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2018.02340\/full\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study looking at the effects of six weeks of mindful self-compassion<\/span> <\/a>found it helped with fatigue, stress and burnout. Given that the study was carried out on a group of psychologists who are used to helping others, and would already know other ways to fight stress, it shows just how effective turning our compassion inwards is. [2]<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Fight back against the tormenting idea that you are alone.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>No matter how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">alone<\/a> you feel, you are on a planet with billions of people. Many of who are actually feeling exactly like you do<\/strong> right now. We might not know these others personally, but they understand. They have had similar heartaches and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">traumas<\/a>. They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/hsp-sensitive-person-pandemic.htm\">sensitive<\/a>, important people, just like you.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Try this:<\/strong> Imagine all the other people sitting, perhaps also alone, in their houses all around the world. Sink into the feeling that your pain is not just your solo burden, but is in fact shared. If you like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/guided-visualisation-therapy-can-make-feel-better.htm\">visualisation<\/a>, you can imagine yourself looking down on the planet, and a coloured light or line connecting you to all the other people.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Use distress techniques designed to help when you feel like giving up.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Several types of talk therapy teach techniques to help under duress, particularly<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/dialectical-behaviour-therapy-london.htm\">dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)<\/a>, which offers what it calls \u201cTIP skills\u201d. This includes things like holding ice as a distraction from emotional pain, breathing from the gut, and \u2018paired muscle relaxation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Try this<\/strong>: Go learn TIP skills in our article on \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">Techniques to Stop Distress<\/a>&#8216;. Also consider trying &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">progressive muscle relaxation<\/a>&#8216;, another stress-busting technique used by therapists.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Go for a walk.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><strong>It can feel the most banal, annoying piece of advice. How could going for a walk help?<\/strong> First of all, it means a change of environment. Second, it gets you out of your thoughts and more into your body. Third, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercise releases chemicals in the body<\/a> that help you feel better. There is a reason there is a therapist joke that a patient wanted to top himself in the office, and the therapist said, sure, but walk around the block eight times first.<\/p>\n<p><em>TRY THIS: Do your best to walk in some sort of nature. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2015\/06\/23\/1510459112\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study coming out of Stanford University<\/span><\/a> found that walking for 90 minutes in a natural area showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with depression, more so than in those who walked in an urban setting.
