Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If ever there was a time to make sure your living space wasn\u2019t <\/strong>negatively affecting your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/second-lockdown-stress.htm\">lockdown<\/a> would be it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7 Ways to Troubleshoot Your Living Space<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How can you make sure your home isn\u2019t bringing you down? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Take an honest appraisal of your home\u2019s health.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s well known that unhealthy housing is linked to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">physical illness<\/a>. A classic example is damp, mould and poor ventilation causing respiratory issues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But studies found that a definite mental health link as well.\u00a0<\/strong>And it can be something as simple as making your house warmer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\"><a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/51439420_The_Health_Impacts_of_Housing_Improvement_A_Systematic_Review_of_Intervention_Studies_From_1887_to_2007\">A review looking at 19 studies<\/a> assessing health impacts of improving heating and energy efficiency in homes saw almost a third <strong>point to improved mental health and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">improved relationships<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What things about your living space have you long overlooked or delayed fixing? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How does it make you feel when you take the time think about it? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Write a list of all the steps that would have to be taken to to fix the main issue. Is there any step you could take this week? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Clear the way to wellbeing. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No, you don\u2019t have to Marie Kondo it all and live like an <\/strong>endlessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">decluttering<\/a> minimalist monk, but it\u2019s worth asking if you have too much stuff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"http:\/\/magazine.ucla.edu\/features\/the-clutter-culture\/index.html\">four-year study at UCLA in America<\/a> went into middle-class homes and <strong>discovered that rewarding ourselves materially, leading to stuff everywhere, may increase our stress, particularly if we are moms<\/strong>. Psychologists noted mothers used words like \u2018mess\u2019 and \u2018very chaotic\u2019 to describe their homes. Measurements of saliva found a link between the way mothers talk about their houses and their diurnal cortisol levels, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">measure of stress<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_121503\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121503\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mick-haupt-k9OqVfJRWlI-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"living space\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mick-haupt-k9OqVfJRWlI-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mick-haupt-k9OqVfJRWlI-unsplash-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mick-haupt-k9OqVfJRWlI-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/mick-haupt-k9OqVfJRWlI-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-121503\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Mich Haupt<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Middle class dads, on the other hand, didn\u2019t seem to have the same problem<\/strong> with clutter in their living space\u2026 read into that what you will. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Listen in to your living space. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Background noise can be something we get used to, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s good for us.<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Strong examples here are traffic and airplane noises. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21084328\/\">One stud<\/a>y linked an increase in only 10 decibels of airplane noise in a community to a 28% rise in anxiety medication use.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/10.1289\/ehp.1409400\">Another study<\/a> showed that people living in areas with high traffic noise were 25% more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">suffer depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it doesn\u2019t have to be so extreme. We can get accustomed to sounds like a dripping tap or <\/strong>humming fridge. But they can leave us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">tired<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">disturb our sleep<\/a> without our realising it. They are easy things to fix, but can be something we endlessly put off. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Bin the bad memories. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, the objet d&#8217;art on your mantlepiece might have been an expensive gift. But if it\u2019s from someone who then<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/honesty-criticism-or-verbal-abuse.htm\">treated you badly<\/a>, each time you look at it your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-unconscious-mind.htm\">unconscious mind<\/a> is making the link. You might even be stopping yourself from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/letting-go-and-moving-on.htm\">moving on<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Do an honest inventory of things in your living space connected to things you\u2019d be better off forgetting. If you aren\u2019t convinced, try putting the article away in an attic or cupboard for a month or two.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. So while you might look at<\/strong> your friend\u2019s closet full of perfectly folded and colour coded clothes and feel envious? The process of folding and lining up clothes might leave you so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/irritability-factor.htm\">frustrated<\/a> you sink into a low mood, particularly if you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creative<\/a>, or suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">adult ADHD<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">In her book, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/livres\/dorothy-lehmkuhl\/organizing-for-the-creative-person\/9780749415020\">Organising for the Creative Person<\/a>,<\/span> Dorothy Lehmkuhl suggests that right brained types simply think differently. For example, having large bins you toss clothes into based on type might work far better for you. And you work better with piles of paperwork kept in flat boxes over upright files. Be creative. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. Mark your territory.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Live with family? Share your bedroom and office space with your partner?<\/strong> Sometimes we all need that proverbial \u2018room of one\u2019s own\u2019 to help us feel grounded. Even if it just means a line of tape dividing an office in two, and deciding on what hours each person gets the office to themselves. Or clearing out a storage closet and making it into a mini <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meditation-and-psychotherapy.htm\">meditation<\/a> room. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">In <span class=\"s4\">his book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=0b3eAQAAQBAJ&amp;dq=privacy+wolfe+1975\"><em><span class=\"s5\">Environmental Psychology<\/span><\/em><\/a>, Tony Cassidy points out that:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;We need&#8230; to have our own private space and time. What is important is to feel we have control over this process, so that we can choose to be alone or with others. It is when this control is removed that psychological stress occurs.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. The furniture we bought as a temporary measure then never replaced, or the art that came on the walls as we are renting a furnished place. But think again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/471564\/The_effect_of_the_physical_environment_on_mental_wellbeing\"> large-scale review<\/a> <strong>focused on understanding how physical environments impact our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-cognitive-approach-therapies.htm\">cognitive<\/a> and emotional resources and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">wellbeing<\/a> drew on data from over 280 academic articles.\u00a0 Although they concluded that more rigid research was needed, it was confirmed that what we see, smell, touch, taste, and hear does indeed have powerful effects. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Room layouts and poor lighting were connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\">diminished learning capacity<\/a>, and even things like floor patterns and finishing materials were connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\">anxiety<\/a> and agitation in those who already had mental health concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p8\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Even if you are in a pre-furnished flat, what things can be hidden, stored, or covered?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><em><span class=\"s1\">What sorts of objects<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>and colours make a place feel safe and comforting to you? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p8\"><em><span class=\"s1\">How could your living space be made to feel more like home?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t feel good at home or anywhere?
