Disordered thinking is often related to diagnosable and treatable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a> disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is disordered thinking? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It is what it sounds like \u2014 thinking that has become<\/strong> disorganised and hard to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"> If you have disordered thinking, you can\u2019t control your thoughts or express yourself well, which can make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">relating with others difficult<\/a>. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms of disordered thinking <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Symptoms can see you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">unable to think straight <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Feeling like your head is full of fog or sand <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">struggling to concentrate <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">rapidly jumping from one subject to the next <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">not finishing your thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li>speaking in a confusing way: too fast, too many pauses, drifting off<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">losing a logical order to your ideas. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why does it matter if my thoughts are a mess? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For starters, when we can\u2019t think well we can\u2019t communicate well. And when we can\u2019t<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-communicate-stress.htm\">communicate well<\/a>, it affects our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">ability to cope<\/a>. We can\u2019t ask for what we need, or state how we feel, or what is upsetting us. Relating to others becomes difficult, which can leave us feeling shunned and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">rejected<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>And in some cases disorganised thinking can be the beginning of a more serious <\/strong>mental health disorder like schizophrenia.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Related mental health issues<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_121954\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121954\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121954\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joseph-frank-xUnhfZNBm7s-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"thought disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joseph-frank-xUnhfZNBm7s-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joseph-frank-xUnhfZNBm7s-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joseph-frank-xUnhfZNBm7s-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/joseph-frank-xUnhfZNBm7s-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-121954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Joseph Frank<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Disordered thinking is connected to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">severe depression<\/a>, which can leave you feeling so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">foggy<\/a> and confused it can be hard to form useful thoughts, or to speak clearly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It can also form a part of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mania.htm\">mania<\/a>, where your thinking can get too fast, and you can\u2019t keep up with your own ideas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But disordered thinking is most commonly known as a symptom of<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a>. Here it is usually (but not always) joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/flashback-vs-hallucination-vs-delusion.htm\">delusions<\/a> (believing things are real that aren\u2019t) and hallucinations (sensing things to be there that aren\u2019t).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is a thought disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The term &#8216;thought disorder&#8217; can be confusing. It&#8217;s called a disorder, yes. But it&#8217;s not currently a standalone diagnosis. Nor is it an actual listed, standalone disorder in the<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-dsm.htm\"> DSM-V<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #800080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-the-icd-10.htm\">ICD-10<\/a><\/span>, the two most used manuals for diagnosing mental health disorders. It&#8217;s instead more of a feature of other disorders, or used as a synonym for severely disorganised thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>At one point, the argument was made for &#8216;thought disorders&#8217; to refer to several different issues. In the 1980s, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeastern.edu\/cali\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Scale-for-the-assessment-of-thought-language-and-communication.pdf\">neuroscientist Nancy C. Andreasen<\/a> argued that thought disorder &#8220;has often been treated as if it were unitary, but in fact it is composed of a number of different language behaviours.&#8221; She\u00a0 identified no less than 18 different types of thought disorders, along with a scale that attempted to measure them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But nowadays, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychiatrist-vs-therapist.htm\">psychiatrists<\/a> and mental health professionals say &#8216;thought disorder&#8217;,<\/strong> they are generally just talking about\u00a0disorganised thinking that is severe enough it affects the way someone speaks and presents themselves.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If it helps, see thought disorders as\u00a0 &#8216;sub disorders&#8217;, a symptom of other listed major mental health disorders.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Diagnosis in the UK<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Here in the UK, if you go see your GP, you won&#8217;t come home with a diagnosis of<\/strong> &#8216;thought disorder&#8217; but with a related diagnosis like severe depression, schizophrenia, or psychotic disorder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE)<\/strong>, which is used to diagnose in Britain, makes no mention of thought disorders. It instead offers a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/cg178\">Guide to Psychosis and Schizophrenia<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Formal thought disorder<\/h2>\n<p><strong>This is a more exact term for thought disorder, and is again often used as a synonym<\/strong> for severely disorganised thinking.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121972\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3402234312_62406cca78.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121972\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-121972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3402234312_62406cca78-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"thought disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3402234312_62406cca78-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/3402234312_62406cca78.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-121972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/calistan\/3402234312\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">cometstarmoon<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Formal thought disorder is about the <em>form<\/em> your thoughts take, <\/strong>and is related to organisation and expression. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It means your thoughts are so disorganised and messy<\/strong> it affects the way you talk and write, and that this is not caused by a medical condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s not the same as <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">being tired<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-being-depressed.htm\">depressed<\/a> and speaking differently. Or of having a short episode of talking strangely, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">after a shock<\/a> like an accident.\u00a0 If you have formal thought disorder, your talking is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> inconsistent<\/span> and incoherent for no known reason, and it has been for some time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Formal thought disorder can include things like: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-you-talk-too-much.htm\">talking too fast and loud<\/a>, or in a garbled manner<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">strange pauses<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">incoherent tangents of thought<\/span><\/li>\n<li>excessive detail<\/li>\n<li>or talking very little and in a vague way that confuses others<\/li>\n<li>using outdated, formal, or strangely elevated language<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">repeating certain words again and again<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">being more obsessed with the sound of words than what they mean<\/span><\/li>\n<li>making words up, or using the wrong words to explain things.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Content thought disorder<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u2018Content thought disorder\u2019 is about <em>what<\/em> you think about.<\/strong> Your thoughts are illogic and confused. An example is having delusions. You might believe you are being persecuted by aliens, or that everyone is secretly out to get you. You might not talk about this, but you think it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you have schizophrenia, you could have<\/strong> both formal and content thought disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>This is confusing&#8230;<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">There is some irony in the fact that mental health professionals and the mental health industry has made their description and diagnosis of disorganised thinking, well&#8230; <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">disorganised<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And highly confusing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Perhaps neuroscientist Andreasen should have been listened to when she actually <\/strong>identified this confusion. &#8220;Because the term &#8220;formal thought disorder&#8221; has been so misunderstood and misused, it is recommended that it no longer be used,&#8221; she suggested. She pointed out that, &#8220;Most of them are in fact disorders of communication&#8230;[that] can be better conceptualised as &#8220;disorders of thought, language, and communication.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the trouble is also that we simply don&#8217;t have<\/strong> a standard &#8216;normal&#8217; for language we can compare everything to, when it is influenced by culture, amongst many other things. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/schizophreniabulletin\/article\/43\/3\/509\/3574458\">2017 review of research around disordered thinking<\/a> explains,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;Language \u201cdistortion\u201d is a sign\u2014in the medical sense\u2014that is potentially measurable but currently without a universally accepted measure.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What really matters about disordered thinking<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The thing to keep in mind is mental health terms and diagnoses\u00a0<\/strong>are not an exact science. They are just words created by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-therapists.htm\">mental health professionals<\/a> to more easily describe groups of people with similar issues.
