Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Known for your wit and humour? But of the sarcastic kind? What does sarcasm mean about you, really?<\/p>\n<h2>The meaning of sarcastic<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Sarcasm is far more than just being funny.\u00a0 It&#8217;s clear even in the dictionary definition<\/strong> of, &#8220;using remarks that clearly mean the opposite of what you say, in order to hurt someone&#8217;s feelings or to humorously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">criticise something<\/a>.&#8221; (Cambridge dictionary).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If it&#8217;s a thing we are criticising, then sarcasm can have its place and its positive power.<\/strong> Using sarcasm on social media to expose, say, the global response of governments to child hunger?\u00a0 Can mean a useful opinion goes viral.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"color: #666699; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S074959781500076X\">research study<\/a><\/span> on sarcasm within organisations even found that it led to greater creativity within teams, raising levels of abstract thinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But where criticism is a red flag is within relationships. <\/strong>When we choose to be sarcastic, we are choosing to hurt and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dangers-criticism-realise.htm\">criticise someone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What sarcasm means about you<\/h2>\n<p><em>What does that mean when it comes to you and your<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\"> mental health<\/a>?<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Yes, you are smart.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Sarcasm, even more than other types of humour, requires timing and nuance to be good at. And as the above study points out, it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creativity<\/a> and abstract thinking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But within relationships, sarcasm means you are also willing to show off your intelligence at the price <\/strong>of things like patience, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/understanding-people.htm\">understanding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You could be a whole lot kinder.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It can be hard to accept that you can actually be <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/kindness-and-mental-health.htm\">a mean person<\/a> if you see yourself as just a &#8216;laid back, funny&#8217; sort.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">But that&#8217;s the seduction of sarcasm. It is a smoke screen to hide behind, and to trick yourself into not facing up to all sorts of things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at an example. Let&#8217;s imagine you&#8217;ve just said this to your partner:<\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, of course we can drive to Florida this year, my idea of a vacation has always been days stuck in a car on a motorway to visit a place full of senior citizens. <\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122001\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122001\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122001\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/trung-thanh-LgdDeuBcgIY-unsplash-1-400x269.jpg\" alt=\"what sarcasm means\" width=\"400\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/trung-thanh-LgdDeuBcgIY-unsplash-1-400x269.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/trung-thanh-LgdDeuBcgIY-unsplash-1-500x336.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/trung-thanh-LgdDeuBcgIY-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/trung-thanh-LgdDeuBcgIY-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Trung Thanh<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>W<\/strong><strong>hat is implicated is that the other person is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>stupid to think this is what you want<\/li>\n<li>unable to understand you, thoughtless<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychological-meaning-of-boredom.htm\">boring<\/a> and uncool<\/li>\n<li>beneath you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not exactly super nice, is it?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You need attention.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>This is not a flaw, or a judgement. We all need attention to thrive.<\/strong> We are essentially pack animals, not made to be solitary and disconnected.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The problem is that by using sarcasm to get attention, you are getting negative attention, not positive attention. So it will never feel enough.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. You are actually being selfish.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>If we are willing to put others down to get a hit of attention, <\/strong>we are actually being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/can-you-be-selfish-and-still-be-a-good-person.htm\">selfish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not that we set out to be so. If we had a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">childhood where we had to earn love and attention<\/a> from adults around us,\u00a0 instead of receiving it naturally? To get our very real needs met? We might still unconsciously believe we have to force others to notice us to survive. As adults we can now meet our own needs, we are no longer a child, but the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/core-beliefs-cbt.htm\"> belief<\/a> can persist.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">We aren&#8217;t born sarcastic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328846567_How_Do_We_Understand_Sarcasm\">Research at the University of Calgary<\/a> in Canada found that children don&#8217;t even understand what sarcasm is until they are five or six years old, and most don&#8217;t find it funny until aged 8 or 9. Sarcasm is something we learn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You don\u2019t know how to ask for what you need.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The reason we use sarcasm to get our point across is that we are unable to ask for what we need outright.<\/strong> Using the same example about the road trip, that would mean saying, &#8220;Look, the truth is I don\u2019t really like big trips that much. Then this will seem crazy to you, hurtful even. How could ever tell someone that when it will upset them?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">You won\u2019t be able to see that this sort of clear communication isn\u2019t what is hurtful. It\u2019s rather hiding what you really think and being passive aggressive about it that upsets others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. You are angry.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>So speaking of passive aggressive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarcasm is passive aggressive anger in disguise, the \u2018thinking man\u2019s anger\u2019.<\/strong> You might not feel angry. You are just being funny, that\u2019s all. But you are punishing the other person with your \u2018jokes\u2019. And there is a reason for that. You are not happy with something about them. In our example, you feel they haven&#8217;t made an effort to understand you.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. You have low self worth.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Remember, humour is about grabbing attention. And when you use sarcasm to get it, you aren\u2019t making<\/strong> people laugh because you are funny, but because if they don\u2019t laugh they will feel bad. It\u2019s negative attention.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">And the reason we are willing to accept negative attention is generally because deep down, that is the sort of attention we think we deserve.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Who would you be without sarcasm?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a good question to ask.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sometimes we are so used to being the sarcastic one our <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">identity<\/a> is tied up with it. It makes us feel special. Without it, we run the risk of being boring. Or just like everyone else.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">Low self-esteem<\/a> leaves us feeling invisible as is. We can believe we have to be special to be loved and liked. If we are like everyone else, we\u2019ll be overlooked.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>But this isn\u2019t true. Instead, the more we can accept that we are like others, that we have something<\/strong> in common with most people we meet (if not all)? The more we can drop our barriers and actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\">connect with others<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the more we connect with others, and just relax <\/strong>and be ourselves, the more we can realise our uniqueness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So oddly, the more we realise how we are the same, and let ourselves<\/strong> for a time run the risk of being boring? The more we create space to be our unique, interesting selves.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Time to stop being sarcastic and start being yourself?
