What is reverse psychology, really, and is it good or bad for our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/healthy-relationships-help-guide.htm\">relationships<\/a>?<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is reverse psychology? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>At the heart of the concept is the<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/assumptions-in-relationships.htm\"> assumption<\/a> that most people don\u2019t like being told what to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So how does reverse psychology work?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You want a person to act a certain way, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">believe<\/a> a certain thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>And have identified they are likely to rebel against being told what to do or think.<\/li>\n<li>So you pretend to want the<span class=\"s1\"> opposite behaviour or belief from them, essentially pushing them to fit your desires.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So what is reverse psychology? <\/strong>It\u2019s really a form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">manipulation<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Is it a tactic that works?<\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In<\/strong> <strong>advertising, certainly.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/An-empirical-study-on-reverse-psychology-applied-in-Chan-Leung\/965650207286b101d0183cc5a3c40cbc1255dfa7\">Research shows<\/a> that, even if we are uncomfortable with the manipulation, we end up still interested in the product sold to us with reverse psychology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In relationships? Perhaps not so much, given the<\/strong> long term losses for the short-term gain. More on that below.<\/p>\n<h3>Is it a psychological term?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Despite the word &#8216;psychology&#8217; being part of it, it&#8217;s not a scientific term<\/strong>. The closest relation used by psychologists would be &#8216;reactance&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reactance theory suggests\u00a0<\/strong>that if we feel our freedom to behave the way we want is being limited or threatened, we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/no-motivation.htm\">motivated<\/a> to regain that freedom.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If you are using reverse psychology on someone, you are playing on their &#8216;reactance&#8217;. You are banking on the fact that they will be motivated to fight what you are pretending to take off the table.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Don\u2019t we all do it at some point?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>It does seem that most of us<\/strong> give it a go at some point or another.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/233021679_Do_people_use_reverse_psychology_An_exploration_of_strategic_self-anticonformity\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study<\/span><\/a> that interviewed 159 university students saw 105 come up with a valid example of when they recently used reverse psychology on someone, and most reported doing so at least once a month. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Reverse psychology in love and romance<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_122186\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122186\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexis-brown-Xv7k95vOFA-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"what is reverse psychology\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexis-brown-Xv7k95vOFA-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexis-brown-Xv7k95vOFA-unsplash-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexis-brown-Xv7k95vOFA-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/alexis-brown-Xv7k95vOFA-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122186\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Alexis Brown<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The classic example of reverse psychology <\/strong>in romance is the advice, &#8220;If you like someone, pretend you don\u2019t care, and that will attract them&#8221;. And then we have things like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">pretend you aren\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jealousy-head.htm\">jealous<\/a> when you are and he\u2019ll lose interest in others<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">w<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/meaning-of-celibate.htm\">ithhold any sex<\/a> even if you want it, and he\u2019ll want a long-term relationship<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">say you don\u2019t care about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\">marriage<\/a> to make him want to marry you.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A worrying use of reverse manipulation is also found in <\/strong><strong>the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/blogs-trending-27640474\">\u2018Pick Up Artist\u201d movement<\/a>, which teaches men to manipulate women into having sex. Tactics include things like<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>the \u2018mystery method\u2019, talking to all members of a group of women while ignoring the one who is your target. Or \u2018negging\u2019, adding a negative compliment about something you like, such as saying, \u2018nice hair, do you ever bother to cut it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Are you using it to boost your self-esteem? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cBefore an important competition I have said that I am extremely unprepared and unfit to compete at a high standard in hopes of hearing reassuring voices reminding me of how hard I had been working anyhow much I deserved it.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This quote is from the above study looking at<\/strong> how often university students spoke in opposites to get what they wanted. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">The study actually found that the most common use of reverse psychology amongst students was in fact to gain reassurance from others. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The meaning of reverse psychology in relationships<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Like any form of manipulation, there are dangers<\/strong> to using this tactic in your relationships.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. It means your relationship is based on dishonesty. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When we use reverse psychology, we consciously choose to say something we know isn\u2019t true. If it\u2019s a tool you use consistently in your relationship, or used to attract your partner? Then the relationship is essentially founded on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">lies<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. It doesn\u2019t build trust.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you are consistently being dishonest, even over silly things, like what restaurant you want to go to? It can all add up to the other person not trusting you.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Always using reverse psychology also affects your own<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/trusting-others-hard.htm\"> capacity to trust<\/a>. It means you never give others the opportunity to communicate directly with you. How can you learn to trust that some people will respect what you need and want, and find a healthy compromise with you?\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. It can backfire in a highly destructive way.<\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_122184\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122184\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4936783187_539cb6152f-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4936783187_539cb6152f-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4936783187_539cb6152f.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/theslowlane\/4936783187\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Robert Ashworth<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If the other person realises just how many times you\u2019ve been dishonest to get what you want, they can be very upset. Or potentially decide they no longer want anything to do with you. And there is not really much you can say in defence, given that you consciously chose to manipulate. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. It\u2019s not viable long term. <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Long-term relationships that are healthy and help us grow as a person require trust, honesty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/be-yourself-around-others.htm\">and that we be ourselves<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">So while reverse manipulation might &#8216;get us the girl&#8217; or guy, it&#8217;s likely going to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">short-term, shallow relationship<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You can lose sight of who you are.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"> If you constantly say the opposite of what you want or feel, and constantly rely on manipulating others to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">boost your self-<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">esteem? Over time, you risk<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\"> losing touch with your identity<\/a> and your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/find-your-inner-resources.htm\">inner resources<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">6. It can become addictive.<\/span> <\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">Addictive behaviours<\/a> happen when something helps us escape emotional pain. If we are using reverse psychology to boost our self-esteem and we start to rely on it to lift our spirits, it could become addictive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #993366;\">7. You don&#8217;t grow as a person.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>What does reverse psychology mean for personal growth? We don&#8217;t learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/communication-problems.htm\">healthy communicating<\/a>, learn to express our wants and needs, or create opportunities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/authentic-self.htm\">be our authentic selves<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can reverse psychology ever be a good thing?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Reverse psychology can have its uses. <\/strong>If you must spend time with someone who loves picking fights and upsetting you, like a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dealing-with-difficult-family-members-9-important-steps.htm\"> family member<\/a>, and you have already had a bad day? Perhaps you choose to pretend you want to see one film in order to avoid seeing a horror film that will scare you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>But if you constantly pretend with that same person to not mind their<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">constant criticisms<\/a> in the hopes they&#8217;ll stop, for example, not so useful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So yes, we sometimes need short-term solutions<\/strong> in the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-care-and-depression.htm\">self-care<\/a>.\u00a0 But we also need to think of long-term consequences and ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">good questions<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Will using reverse psychology harm me or the other person?<\/li>\n<li>Or have long term consequences on my relationship or sense of self?<\/li>\n<li>Is it really necessary in this situation, does it lead to a short-term win I need?<\/li>\n<li>Or am I simply avoiding direct communication or setting a needed boundary?<\/li>\n<li>Am I playing games here? Or falling into manipulation because I&#8217;m feeling scared?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>I swear my therapist uses it on me<\/h3>\n<p><strong>A highly skilled therapist might play along with you,<\/strong> but it&#8217;s not reverse psychology. They do not have an agenda to get something from you. Therapies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-person-centred-therapy.htm\">person-centred counselling<\/a> are instead looking for a way to create space for you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">see something from a different perspective<\/a>, and find your own answers that work for you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, if you are convinced that<\/strong> you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-want-to-fall-in-love-how-to.htm\">never going to find love<\/a>,\u00a0 a therapist might say, &#8220;Okay, you are never going to find love. Talk me through your reasons.&#8221; This opens a doorway for you to see the flaws in your argument for yourself.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Need help to stop manipulating others?
