Take our free <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Adult ADHD quiz\u00a0<\/span><\/a>now].\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Girls, women, and ADHD<\/h2>\n<p><strong>For a long time, ADHD was a diagnosis<\/strong> given mostly to hyperactive boys.<\/p>\n<p><b>It was finally recognised that girls were being under-diagnosed,<\/b><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>because they were more likely to have an \u2018inattentive\u2019 version of ADHD than be hyperactive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That child always dreaming and staring out the window,<\/strong> lost in her own world, is as likely to have ADHD as the child speaking out of turn and unable to sit still.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And she grows up into a woman who still<\/strong> struggles to stay grounded. And while the male:female ratio is worse in children, she might still run the risk of missing out on a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17177011\/\">study of European countries<\/a> found that ratios of boy:girl diagnoses can range from 3:1 to 16:1. In adults, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3101894\/\">American research<\/a><span style=\"color: #800080;\"> suggests suggests the ratio is at 4:1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>The core symptoms of ADHD<\/h2>\n<p><strong>There are two main categories for ADHD.<\/strong> These are inattention, and hyperactivity-impulsivity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From there, three &#8216;subtypes&#8217; are considered<\/strong> in a diagnosis:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>predominantly inattentive<\/li>\n<li>hyperactive-impulsive<\/li>\n<li>combined presentations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>By adulthood, many find that even if they were<\/strong> <strong>hyper as a child, this symptom is<\/strong> dampened. Instead you might suffer restlessness and feeling a sort of discomfort being in your own skin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your inattention might now be about not being able to<\/strong> complete things, and being disorganised.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And while you can&#8217;t focus in general, at times you might fall into &#8220;hyper focus&#8221;. <\/strong>You get so engaged you don&#8217;t keep a foot in reality, or focus on the wrong things. You are distracted by your own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stop-overthinking.htm\">overthinking<\/a>, and are being told you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-listener-person-centred-counselling.htm\">don\u2019t listen<\/a> at work.<\/p>\n<h2>Examples of ADHD in women<\/h2>\n<p>So what might your life look like? Here&#8217;s how symptoms of ADHD in women can manifest.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Inattentive\/ Disorganised<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>having a messy house and\/or desk<\/li>\n<li>needing to make lists to get things done<\/li>\n<li>and then feeling like it\u2019s a never-ending list<\/li>\n<li>forgetting things or messing up scheduling<\/li>\n<li>paperwork is a nightmare, you can\u2019t keep up<\/li>\n<li>a constant and frantic sense of overwhelm<\/li>\n<li>blaming yourself for not being able to stay on top of life<\/li>\n<li>feeling exhausted all the time from trying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Hyperfocus\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>finding yourself doing some &#8216;research&#8217; online and going on a huge, deep tangent<\/li>\n<li>going into \u2018hyper focus\u2019 and getting tons done<\/li>\n<li>but you choose the wrong things to focus on<\/li>\n<li>a feeling of &#8216;coming to&#8217; when you exit hyper focus<\/li>\n<li>finding far more time has passed than you realised<\/li>\n<li>important things get neglected, and you are in stress all over again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Relationships\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>feel impatient with partners and children<\/li>\n<li>then feel terrible that you snapped or were unkind<\/li>\n<li>you hide your struggles from others, doing your best to seem normal<\/li>\n<li>which means you sometimes feel like a fake, who is the real you?<\/li>\n<li>and then you feel lonely<\/li>\n<li>particularly as friends can take it personally if you forget things or seem to not be paying attention<\/li>\n<li>so yes, relationships can be hard, and draining<\/li>\n<li>you have so many good intentions to be a good friend\/parent\/partner. The presents you\u2019ll by, something you\u2019ll do for them, the cake you\u2019ll bake\u2026<\/li>\n<li>but you get distracted, you miss the time window, and compensate in ways that mean you feel disappointed by yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Emotional difficulty\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>a nagging feeling that you are flawed, useless<\/li>\n<li>you feel low, perhaps suffer from anxiety and depression<\/li>\n<li>a constant sense you should be more, do more<\/li>\n<li>that means you endlessly compare yourself unfavourably to others<\/li>\n<li>and feel left behind, beneath your potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Hyperactivity\/ restlessness\/discomfort<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>can\u2019t stand queues, concerts, long bus journeys, feel trapped and bored<\/li>\n<li>possible sensory overwhelm if places are noisy, too bright.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Impulsivity\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>you aren&#8217;t good with money and can splurge, buy things you don&#8217;t need<\/li>\n<li>or can jump into relationships or sexual encounters that aren&#8217;t right<\/li>\n<li>and say things you regret<\/li>\n<li>you can lack self control and drink too much, eat too much, use substances, gamble, go on shopping binges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Women, ADHD, and parenting<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_122249\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122249\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122249\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooke-lark-UX87Pz74ukY-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"ADHD in women\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooke-lark-UX87Pz74ukY-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooke-lark-UX87Pz74ukY-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooke-lark-UX87Pz74ukY-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooke-lark-UX87Pz74ukY-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122249\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Brooke Lark<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>On one hand, you might be the fun, cool mom,<\/strong> making<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\"> creative<\/a> games for your kids, bursting into random song and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dance-movement-psychotherapy.htm\"> dance<\/a>, and going off on last minute adventures.<\/p>\n<p><em>You are more likely to be the parent who takes a new route home from school, sees a sign for pick-your-own strawberries, and spends a delightful hour in a field with the kids, homework and structured dinner time be damned.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>But you might also be the mother who forgets<\/strong> parent teacher meetings and important paperwork. Or doesn\u2019t monitor your kids homework like you know you should. Then over compensates and is too strict, until your kids are upset.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Most of all will be the nagging voice that you aren\u2019t doing a good job of it. That you can\u2019t keep up, that the house is too messy, that you aren\u2019t cut out for this, that all the other mums at the school gate are judging you. Deep down you know you love your kids and that they are happy and and that is all that matters, but you can constantly feel inadequate.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why are women less diagnosed than men?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Women are more likely to reach out for help<\/strong> than men when it comes to mental health issues. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.org.uk\/a-to-z\/m\/men-and-mental-health\">Mental Health Foundation reports<\/a> that here in the UK, only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But they are also more likely to have developed a system to hide<\/strong> their ADHD systems.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25317366\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">research review<\/span><\/a> looking at 41 studies on attention deficit disorder concluded that women and girls were more likely to develop efficient coping mechanisms to hide their symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Because you are accustomed to hiding your ADHD symptoms, and they might be more introspective<\/strong> than obvious, you might be misdiagnosed as having low self-esteem, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression, and anxiety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Mental health issues and disorders connected to ADHD in women<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Some of the<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-comorbidity.htm\">comorbidities<\/a>\u2019 of ADHD and ADD in women (issues that occur alongside another) are, not surprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">depression<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>. You depression might come with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mania.htm\">mania<\/a>, meaning you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bipolar-disorder.htm\">bipolar disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the high stress that ADHD causes, you can also suffer from<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-anxiety-disorder.htm\">anxiety or an anxiety disorder<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic disorder<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd.htm\">obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You might also suffer from<\/strong> an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-eating-disorders.htm\">eating disorder<\/a>\u00a0 like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anorexia-case-study.htm\">anorexia<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-new-eating-disorders.htm\">bulimia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addictions can be a problem, from<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">alcohol misuse<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">party drugs<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addicted-to-love.htm\"> love addiction<\/a>, and shopping addiction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And then there are<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep problems<\/a>. The busy mind that ADHD brings mean many people find it hard to drop off, or have restless sleep.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/personality-disorder-a-help-guide.htm\">Personality disorders<\/a> <\/strong>can manifest in someone with\u00a0 ADHD. In women, this is often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Does a diagnosis matter?<\/h2>\n<p>It gets you the help you need. And in some cases help can mean you avoid more serious issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A cohort of over over twenty UK experts met in 2018 to discuss ADHD in women and girls. In <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7422602\/\">the paper they published<\/a> about their conclusions, they pointed out that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;Women with ADHD have been found to be at higher risk for some adverse outcomes, including greater mental health impairment, severe mental illness (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/schizophrenia.htm\">schizophrenia<\/a>) and admissions to in-patient psychiatric hospitals in adulthood.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Pretty sure this is you?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It can be difficult to get access to a diagnosis through the<\/strong> National Health Service (NHS) here in the UK, where adult ADHD is only beginning to be given the attention it deserves. But there is a growing number of private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychiatrist-vs-therapist.htm\">psychiatrists<\/a> offering the service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can&#8217;t currently afford a psychiatrist, and aren&#8217;t sure if you do or don&#8217;t have ADHD? Another option<\/strong> is to try a few sessions with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-treatment.htm\">psychotherapist who works with ADHD clients<\/a>, which will be cheaper, and see what their professional opinion is.
