Messy house, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">messy finances<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">messy relationships<\/a>, messy thinking, even? Tried all the tips &#8212; making lists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/declutter-your-life-tidying.htm\">decluttering<\/a>, doing one thing at a time &#8212; and still can&#8217;t keep up?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I just the creative type?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Blame it on being &#8216;born with a creative brain&#8217;?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Creativity is not seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">personality trait<\/a> we are born with, but more of a skill we learn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Research has long shown that we are in fact <em>all<\/em> born creative.<\/strong> For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZfKMq-rYtnc&amp;t=206s\">researcher George Land<\/a> followed 1,600 children way back in the 1960s. Using a &#8216;creativity test&#8217;, he discovered that 98% were &#8216;genius&#8217; level at aged five. By adults, that had dropped to 2%. So it&#8217;s a skill we can also unlearn.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Nor does creativity necessarily equate to disorganised. It just means you have to devise a way of organising that works for you. Which might, for example, be sorted piles of paperwork over everything alphabetised in a file folder.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So I wasn&#8217;t born unorganised? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We can actually be born with brains that have a different capacity for organisation<\/strong> than the norm. S<\/span><span class=\"s1\">omeone with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning differences<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adult-adhd-quiz\">attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/a> might really struggle to be organised. Their brain does not naturally veer in that direction, or they have a strange way of organisation that others can\u2019t understand. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ADHD &#8211; order in the chaos<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_122280\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122280\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122280\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-YuQEEaNOgBA-unsplash-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"disorganised\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-YuQEEaNOgBA-unsplash-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-YuQEEaNOgBA-unsplash-500x374.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-YuQEEaNOgBA-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Brett Jordan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2518387\/\">review on current treatments for adult ADHD<\/a> published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment points out that, &#8220;Spouses who do not have ADHD usually complain that their partner is unreliable, messy, disorganised.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">But it\u2019s not that those with ADHD have no sense of organisation. It\u2019s just that they organise differently. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example, those with ADHD can think in circles, <\/strong>coming back to a topic after veering off in other directions, each time with new insight. If they are talking to someone who thinks in a very linear fashion, this might seem disorganised. But there is \u2018order in the chaos\u2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Another thing that can happen with ADHD is<\/strong> \u2018hyper focus\u2019. You might have the messiest kitchen known to man. Then one day, you decide to tackle it, and end up with micro systems of organisation others haven\u2019t even thought of. The trouble is that hyper focus tends to be badly timed. So you probably chose to deal with the kitchen on a day you had an important deadline, or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/need-more-time.htm\"> lost track of time<\/a> and forgot to pick the kids up from school. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mental health and organisation <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes our brains are quite average, but<\/strong> environmental factors have led to us being a disorganised sort. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In psychology, \u2018environments\u2019 refer to<\/strong> the people we interact with, and the experiences we live through. Things like family, teachers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-psychological-trauma.htm\">traumas<\/a> influence how we see ourselves and the world. If our experiences are negative, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\"> mental health issues<\/a> that arise affect our behaviours, which can in some cases affect our ability to organise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>So what are these mental health issues that might affect our disorganisation?<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Low self-esteem.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_122279\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122279\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122279\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4624465693_115ce5fa02-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"disorganised\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4624465693_115ce5fa02-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4624465693_115ce5fa02.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/philliecasablanca\/4624465693\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Phil Whitehouse<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0If we feel we are stupid, and<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">not good enough<\/a> to do things, then we don\u2019t try. This can include trying to organise our life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Low self-esteem <strong>is also connected to what are called<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/examples-of-core-beliefs.htm\">limiting beliefs<\/a>\u2019. If we have a limiting belief that \u201cI <span style=\"color: #333333;\">don\u2019t deserve good things\u2019, then we\u2019ll create a life that \u2018proves\u2019 this belief true. This can mean having a messy house instead of a beautiful one we are happy in, or always being late so that others are angry instead of happy with us. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Depression.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">suffered from depression<\/a> in your life, you have probably noticed a direct correlation between the state of your house, finances, and career and the state of your moods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When we are depressed, our brain seems to shut down or dampen.<\/strong> It\u2019s like a fog rolls in, and we can\u2019t think clearly. And we<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\"> suffer from fatigue<\/a>. We are dialled down to low, and it takes twice as much effort to go half as far.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Anxiety.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is based on racing, increasingly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-disordered-thinking.htm\"> illogical thoughts<\/a> about your future. Your brain is so consumed by &#8216;what might happen&#8217; that it can be hard to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cant-focus-might-one-psychological-health-conditions.htm\">stay focussed<\/a> on the life in front of you. You can make mistakes at work, forget to meet a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-feel-so-alone.htm\">friend<\/a>, or just be disorganised in general.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. PTSD and complex PTSD.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)<\/a> was first a diagnosis for soldiers, and those in emergency services.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">But we now know that PTSD is far more prolific, and can result from anything <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-does-a-traumatic-experience-do-to-your-body-and-brain.htm\">your brain decides to process as trauma<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you experienced ongoing trauma as a child, <\/strong>and now have PTSD-like symptoms,\u00a0this can be referred to as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\">complex PTSD<\/a>\u2019. Research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/childhood-effects-of-trauma.htm\">childhood trauma affects the way the brain develops<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Trauma becomes a perfect storm when it comes to organisation.<\/strong> It can include both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depression and anxiety,<\/a> and symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distraction<\/a> that in some cases can lead to a misdiagnosis of ADHD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Sleep problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/overcoming-problems-with-sleep.htm\">Lack of sleep or disrupted sleep<\/a> leads to troubles thinking clearly, which then affects our organisation skills.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">So being disorganised is not my fault?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u201cLaziness\u201d is often a misnomer. Nobody wants to suffer because they can\u2019t keep their life organised<\/strong> enough to avoid things like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\"> unemployment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money issues<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\">loneliness<\/a>. An average person manages to keep up, even if they spend hours playing video games or hanging out with their friends and have a messier house than most. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you can\u2019t keep up with life, and you have upsetting experiences in your past you\u2019ve<\/strong> never talked about or dealt with?
