Or you worry they are too different from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-health-issues-in-childhood.htm\">siblings<\/a> or schoolmates? Left wondering if it&#8217;s time for child counselling?<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Even before Covid-19, <a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/digital.nhs.uk\/data-and-information\/publications\/statistical\/mental-health-of-children-and-young-people-in-england\/2020-wave-1-follow-up\">an NHS survey<\/a> estimated that one in nine children had a diagnosable mental health disorder. This was raised to one in six during the height of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My child is not happy all the time <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0Children are not meant to be <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-happy-why-is-it-so-hard.htm\">happy<\/a> all the time.\u00a0 None of us are. Children are growing, changing, and being constantly challenged as they go, and this of course leads to some moodiness. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Just think of yourself and the last time you had to make a big change, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">a new job<\/a>. Did you feel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">anxious, stressed<\/a>, overwhelmed? Get snappy with loved ones? Want to give up? Your child is no different in the face of changes and challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What children need here is to feel<\/strong> <strong>accepted and loved no matter their mood or behaviour.<\/strong> If you are uncomfortable with your child&#8217;s moods, or aren&#8217;t able to handle your child unless they are &#8216;good&#8217;, it&#8217;s worth seeking some help with parenting. The charity <a href=\"https:\/\/parents.actionforchildren.org.uk\/\">Parent Talk UK<\/a> offers a free helpline where you can confidentially talk to a non-judgmental parenting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coaching-and-counselling.htm\">coach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am not sure who my child is <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Again, often normal. Your child is developing their personality and discovering their<\/strong> personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as their own personal power around different people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Each stage of personal growth presents a new challenge as well as a new chance for<\/strong> expansion, right up to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teenage-brain.htm\"> the teenage years<\/a>, where we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">solidify our identity<\/a>. It can help parents to not panic if they learn the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/erikson-theory-eight-stages.htm\"> general stages of psychosocial growth.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So then how do I know if it&#8217;s time for child counselling?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Child counselling might be in order if there are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">significant changes to mood and behaviour compared to your child&#8217;s personal baseline<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">struggles not in just one area but in several or most areas <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">a new tendency for your kids to say worrisome things that are out of character<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rise-in-self-harming.htm\">self-harming<\/a> or violent behaviours<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">medically unexplained health problems<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Significantly different moods and behaviours.<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_122448\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122448\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-hsRmWrbupB8-unsplash-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"child counselling\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-hsRmWrbupB8-unsplash-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-hsRmWrbupB8-unsplash-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/brett-jordan-hsRmWrbupB8-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122448\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Brett Jordan<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s not about comparing your child to other children.\u00a0<\/strong>Just because one of your children has many friends and is good at school doesn&#8217;t mean the other who is shyer, and likes school less, has mental health issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s about looking for changes in personality and mood that go beyond<\/strong> the stage of growth they are in, and their\u00a0 unique personality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example, if your child has always been the<\/strong> shy child, since nursery school onward, and are struggling with now going to a new school? Then this is likely normal for their personality. But if your child was always shy and is suddenly loud and acting out in class, this is a serious red flag. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">The exception here is if your child has long had behaviours that were different, and these haven&#8217;t changed, but now your child is of school age these behaviours are increasingly a problem. This could signify a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-learning-difficulties.htm\"> learning difference<\/a> or something like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/adhd-in-children-should-you-be-concerned.htm\">ADHD<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-an-autism-test.htm\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a>. In such cases, it\u2019s worth seeing a child psychologist for advice. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Struggles in several areas of life. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Children can try to hide things, but<\/strong> if they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">depressed or anxious<\/a> it tends to affect all areas of their life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If your eight year-old is suddenly having troubles<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\"> making friends<\/a>, but getting along with her siblings and her friends at church and dance class, happy at home, and in normal health? It\u2019s more likely that she is just experiencing a social challenge over having an issue with herself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If, on the other hand, she starts<\/strong> fighting with her siblings, no longer wants to attend the dance classes she used to love, and suddenly has a low appetite and is sleeping more, it\u2019s likely there is a serious issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Saying worrisome things.<\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Always pay attention if your child starts verbalising negative things.<\/strong> This could sound like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">saying horrible things about themselves, like calling themselves stupid, no good, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-self-worth.htm\">worthless<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>expressing constant and increasing worries about their future<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/talking-to-children-about-death-and-dying.htm\">talking about death<\/a> or giving up on life<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">anything to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-suicidal-or-like-self-harming-techniques-to-stop-distress.htm\">hurting themselves<\/a> or someone else<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">verbalising despair or violence.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Don&#8217;t overlook things like<\/strong> sudden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trichotillomania.htm\">hair pulling<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shocking-truth-skin-disorder-mood.htm\">skin picking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if your child is suddenly lashing out at others in physical ways,<\/strong> it&#8217;s a huge red flag.\u00a0 Not just of possible mental health issues, but also possible medical issues involving the brain. Do take it seriously and seek medical advice and\/or child counselling.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Unexplained health issues.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Some children are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/jung-personality-types.htm\"> introverted<\/a> and respond to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/stress-vs-anxiety.htm\">stress and anxiety<\/a> by internalising it, until it externalises itself in physical symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If you are not currently creating a safe or calm environment for your child to ask for support, this can also be their unconscious way of getting your attention without<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attention-seeking-behaviour.htm\"> feeling guilty<\/a> for asking for it. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">This might particularly be true if your family is not very open. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Do you actually<\/strong> discuss issues, or do you brush them under the carpet and \u2018get on with it\u2019? Teaching your child to also do so? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Or are you very stressed in life right now, unknowingly giving your child the idea that you don\u2019t have time for their struggles? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/parental-stress.htm\">Parental stress directly affects children<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Medical symptoms\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">that are unexplained by other things and might instead be stress and anxiety related include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">constant low grade colds and flus<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">upset stomach or changes to eating habits<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">headaches <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">random aches and pains<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">sleep issues<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-have-more-energy.htm\">fatigue<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Another major sign it&#8217;s time for child counselling<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Another clear indicator? When\u00a0<\/strong>your child asks for counselling.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If your child directly asks you to get them help finding a therapist, or lets you know they would like someone else to talk to that isn&#8217;t you? Don&#8217;t brush them off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Even if from your perspective your child is fine, even if you think maybe they are just trying to be like their friends<\/strong> who are in child counselling, listen. It takes a lot of courage for a child to ask a parent to help them get help. Even if it&#8217;s only a matter of one or two sessions and the therapist tells you your child is fine, it&#8217;s better than potentially overlooking a hidden trauma, or a struggle you are blinded to in your parental need to believe your child is fine.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Does my child need therapy? Or do I?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Take a deep breath and be as honest with yourself as you can, while also<\/strong> remembering to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-compassion.htm\">self-compassion<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/do-you-need-therapy.htm\">Is it possible you need therapy<\/a>, too? Or even instead of your child? Is the stress coming from your child&#8217;s exterior worlds of school and socialising, is it truly an unknown behavioural or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\">learning issue<\/a> that needs looking into? Or is the stress largely coming from their home life, of which you are part? And your own inability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/advanced-listening-skills.htm\">listen<\/a> and communicate with your child?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Or would family therapy be a good fit here?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-systemic-therapy.htm\">Systemic therapy<\/a>, often called simply family therapy, works on the idea that none of us function alone.
