Darcy<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Trying really hard to keep it going, but most of the time just left thinking, \u201cI feel empty inside\u201d? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Why do I feel so dead inside? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are actually times in life it\u2019s quite normal to feel empty inside.<\/strong> Other times when we need to numb out briefly as a survival tactic. And then times when feeling dead inside for no apparent reason is a sign there is a lot more going on than we realise, and we need to pay attention. This article discusses:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>grief and loss<\/li>\n<li>emotional shock<\/li>\n<li>PTSD and c-PTSD<\/li>\n<li>depression<\/li>\n<li>loneliness<\/li>\n<li>the sociopathy spectrum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Grief, loss, and feeling numb inside <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Have you recently experienced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>, big <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-changing-events.htm\">life change<\/a>, or loss of some kind?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s normal to feel empty inside after a loss<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/grief-counselling.htm\">Grief<\/a> can go on for months, and then can hit on and off for years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And it\u2019s not just bereavement from losing a person or<\/strong> beloved pet that can cause grief. We can also be grieving if we:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/unemployment-improving-self-esteem.htm\">made redundant<\/a> from a job that we loved<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or are forced to take an early or unwanted retirement<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">become an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/empty-nest-syndrome-how-to-manage.htm\">empty nester<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/moving-abroad-cause-depression.htm\">move country<\/a> and leave our culture behind<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">experience an accident or illness that changes our functionality<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/losing-something-you-love.htm\">lose a very precious item<\/a> with great personal value. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_122494\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30385498765_7f6df51b27.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122494\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30385498765_7f6df51b27-400x381.jpg\" alt=\"feeling numb\" width=\"400\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30385498765_7f6df51b27-400x381.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/30385498765_7f6df51b27.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-122494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pagedooley\/30385498765\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Kevin Dooley<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In such cases, it\u2019s important to recognise that you are in an adjustment period.<\/strong> You\u2019ve had a shock, and you are recalibrating, so to speak. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">It\u2019s as if our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">brain goes into overwhelm<\/a>, and turns on the cruise control for a bit until it gets its bearings and can figure out how to cope and thrive again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Emotional shock<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Did you recently get surprised by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">difficult situation out of your control<\/a>? An accident, crime, or natural disaster? Felt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">exhausted<\/a> ever since, and less <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\">able to cope<\/a>?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-warning-signs-acute-stress-reaction-emotional-shock.htm\">Emotional shock<\/a> <strong>is not a medical diagnosis, but it\u2019s a term <\/strong>used to describe the after effects we can experience after a trauma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">If you are in emotional shock, you will feel numb and empty, alongside symptoms like:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">jumpiness\/being on edge<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">mood swings<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">social withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">substance abuse<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">changes to eating and sleeping. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Emotional shock tends to wear off in a few weeks and we slowly get back to normal. If it doesn\u2019t<\/strong> wear off, if it goes on or on or if symptoms worsen, then it\u2019s possible it has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/acute-stress-disorder-vs-ptsd.htm\">post-traumatic shock syndrome (PTSD)<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">PTSD and complex PTSD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Have you felt numb ever since experiencing a trauma, or since childhood?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Post-traumatic shock disorder from a traumatic experience<\/strong> can mean we veer from fits of rage and upset, to feeling totally dead and empty inside. It\u2019s as if our emotional thermostat now has &#8216;hot&#8217; or &#8216;off&#8217;, but struggles to be anything in-between. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what if there was no big recent trauma, but you feel as if<\/strong> you\u2019ve spend most of your life asking, \u2018why do I feel empty inside\u2019? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-122475\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/susan-wilkinson-EDJKEXFbzHA-unsplash-400x308.jpg\" alt=\"feel dead inside\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/susan-wilkinson-EDJKEXFbzHA-unsplash-400x308.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/susan-wilkinson-EDJKEXFbzHA-unsplash-500x385.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/susan-wilkinson-EDJKEXFbzHA-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>If you had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">difficult childhood<\/a> with a series of traumatic experiences over one big trauma, you might have what is now referred to as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-complex-ptsd.htm\"> \u2018complex trauma\u2019 or \u2018c-PTSD\u2019<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have no idea why I feel empty inside <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Has there been no recognisable trauma, no big event to speak of? Your childhood was average? But lately you feel like a cast member of the Walking Dead? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">It is likely to be depression. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">Depression<\/a> is a spectrum of low moods that often descend without an exact reason. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sufferers report feeling as if they are pushing through sand, and as if their<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\">head is full of fog.<\/a> Other symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feeling exhausted even if you sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">general hopelessness <\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">negative thoughts<\/a> about the world and yourself<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">changes to eating and sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social withdrawal<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Sometimes depression happens as a seemingly small event triggers old emotions and experiences that are unresolved. In a way this can be a positive, if we then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-the-right-therapist.htm\">seek support<\/a> and end up healing our hidden wounds. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">suddenly depressed<\/a> despite a wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">new job<\/a> might lead us to realise that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">rude colleague<\/a> has triggered old feelings about being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bullying-in-the-workplace-case-study.htm\">bullied as a child<\/a>. It&#8217;s a chance to process that pain and finally move on.<\/p>\n<h2>Depression, or loneliness?<\/h2>\n<p><em>Find yourself in a situation far away from friends and loved ones? Or have you reached a point in life where you&#8217;ve given up on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/connecting-with-people.htm\"> real connection<\/a>? And just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-let-down.htm\">feel let down<\/a> by those around you?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Our new<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\"> &#8216;ultra connected&#8217; technology<\/a> has contributed to an &#8216;ultra unconnected&#8217; society. It&#8217;s as if there is another pandemic buzzing in the background, a pandemic of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\"> loneliness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Britain&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campaigntoendloneliness.org\/the-facts-on-loneliness\/\">Campaign to End Loneliness<\/a> charity suggests 45% of us, almost half, are living with feelings of loneliness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s all too easy for doctors to tell someone they have depression without asking about their social situation.<\/strong> A prescription of anti-depressants will just mask symptoms, not help you learn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">find new friends<\/a> and form lasting, supportive connections. And it&#8217;s arguable that many fast diagnoses of depression could be re-diagnosed as severe loneliness.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But I\u2019ve always felt empty inside, can that just be normal?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Never quite understood everyone\u2019s obsession with emotions? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Or wonder why everyone seems so sure of who they are when you change to suit? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Deep down have you long worried if there is something very different about you? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Always feeling like you are playing an extended, advanced game of pretend? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s possible you are on the sociopathy spectrum. Despite the clich\u00e9s, <\/strong>sociopathy is not an instant ticket to a life as a criminal or terrible person. It means you don\u2019t naturally have a wide emotional spectrum and have to learn emotions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sympathy-and-empathy.htm\">empathy<\/a>. Sociopathic people can choose to be useful, contributing citizens as much as anyone can.
