It&#8217;s connected to all sorts of fun stuff, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/alcalc\/article\/44\/2\/128\/184655\">higher risk of brain damag<\/a>e than just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/drinking-too-much-alcohol.htm\">chronic drinking<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">But what about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a>? Is it really a big deal if you like to go on benders a few times a month?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is binge drinking?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2689602\/\">European medical professionals define it<\/a> as &#8220;episodic excessive drinking&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Binge drinking means you do all your drinking in one go. Not one for a glass every now and then or with dinner, you put aside time to drink to excess, often with the express intention of becoming very drunk. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBut I really meant to just have a few\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Nobody actually goes out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">friends<\/a> they only see for drinks, and who they know get blinding drunk, truly believing they will just &#8216;have a few&#8217;. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are going out to drink, with people you know drink a lot, <\/strong>you generally know deep down you are going to binge drink. Otherwise you would have stayed home, or have gone out with friends who don\u2019t drink that much. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I stayed within the recommended intake <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Starting to monitor our units can be a decent<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"> start if we are worried about our drinking habits. <\/span><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">But as a standalone approach to binge drinking, it doesn\u2019t tend to go very far.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It doesn&#8217;t take into account<\/strong> individual differences. T<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/alcohol-support\/binge-drinking-effects\/\"> NHS page on binge drinking<\/a> lists how many alcoholic units is and isn\u2019t a binge, but with a caveat. \u201cThis is not an exact definition for binge drinking that applies to everyone, as tolerance to alcohol can vary from person to person.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_122505\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122505\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4344985046_76b5bee7cc-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"binge drinking\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4344985046_76b5bee7cc-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/4344985046_76b5bee7cc.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ubrayj02\/4344985046\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Umberto Brayj<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>There isn&#8217;t even a consensus on how many units is a binge.<\/strong> For example, in the UK, the advice is that a female is bingeing if she has more than six drinks. In America, this lowers to four. This works out to roughly the same amount of alcohol when you take into account different measurements per country, but it&#8217;s a confusing system.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Once we get that \u2018units allowed\u2019 into our head, it can just become license to drink too much.\u00a0 It means we ignore if we are already drunk two drinks in. Unit monitoring might have its place, but it\u00a0 also green lights heavy drinking, while never encouraging discussion around why we are drinking so much in the first place. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And if you are obsessed with your units so you can thereby show you<\/strong> \u2018don\u2019t have a problem\u2019? You probably have a problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is an alcohol \u2018problem\u2019?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Obviously quantity matters. But an alcohol problem is actually less to do with quantity of alcohol than it is to do with quantity of thoughts about alcohol and your behaviours around alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Alcohol is a problem when it distracts us and when we can\u2019t control how we relate to it.<\/strong> Let&#8217;s take someone who &#8216;only has one glass of wine a night&#8217;. But then also:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">thinks about that drink throughout the day<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">rotates their night around that drink<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feels upset if someone suggests they shouldn\u2019t have that drink<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">secretly often have two glasses but tells everyone it remains just one <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">tells themselves they can take or leave that drink<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">but feels edgy and annoyed if they don&#8217;t have it<\/span><\/li>\n<li>and the more they try not to think about having a drink, the more they think about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>One glass of alcohol has become a very real<\/strong> drinking problem, veering toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/substance-abuse-vs-addiction.htm\">addiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can I binge drink and not have an alcohol problem? <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_122506\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122506\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122506\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kelsey-chance-tAH2cA_BL5g-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"binge drinking\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kelsey-chance-tAH2cA_BL5g-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kelsey-chance-tAH2cA_BL5g-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kelsey-chance-tAH2cA_BL5g-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/kelsey-chance-tAH2cA_BL5g-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122506\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by: Kelsey Chance<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sure. Say, for example, you binge drink at <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/weddings-and-depression-pnd.htm\">weddings<\/a> and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/holiday-romance-mental-health.htm\">vacations<\/a>, with a tendency to get caught up in the social habits of those around you. But tend to drink very little otherwise. In fact when your work is going well, you are so distracted you barely think about drinking. You don\u2019t likely have a binge drinking problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If, on the other hand, you go out binge drinking once a month,<\/strong> spend a week recovering, think constantly about your next \u2018bender weekend\u2019, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">lie to your partner<\/a> about how much you really drink on those weekends? Then it might be an alcohol problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Remember, it\u2019s about how you relate to alcohol, and how it affects your life in general, not just how much or often you drink. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The psychological side effects of binge drinking <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>First of all, yes,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\">alcohol does indeed cause depression<\/a>. It is even medically referred to as a \u2018depressant\u2019, as in a substance that gears down our central nervous system, slowing down brain functioning. Alcohol also disrupts our quality of sleep, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">poor sleep<\/a> is strongly connected to low moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And if we hide behind unit counts and never look at our intentions<\/strong> for bouts of heavy drinking, we avoid seeing issues we are hiding from. This might be:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a> (I am just better at talking when I\u2019m tipsy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> (I can\u2019t meet potential dates unless I\u2019m drinking)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-repressed-signs.htm\">unresolved emotional upset<\/a> (I only feel happy and good when I drink). <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If we are using alcohol instead of dealing with our issues, we stop ourselves from progressing and reaching our potential. Studies contradict each other on exact statistics because often there is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a> and\u00a0 other psychiatric issues confusing things. But the link is undeniable.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0306460314004298\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American researchers<\/span><\/a> focussing on binge drinking in particular found that women without previous major depression were at the highest risk of alcohol-related suicide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Drinking made me do it <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And then there are the psychological side effects that arise from things that happen when we are blinding drunk that would never have happened otherwise. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-guilty-all-the-time.htm\">guilt<\/a> from upsetting others when we are drunk<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/promiscuity-and-depression.htm\">sleeping with someone we don\u2019t even like<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">self-hatred if we end up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/injury-and-depression.htm\">an accident that injures us<\/a> or someone else in a permanent fashion<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">shame<\/a> if our family, partner, and\/or children are embarrassed of our binges<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-alone.htm\">loneliness<\/a> when we realise that people like us less because of our drinking habit, or that our \u2018drinking buddies\u2019 only like us for drinking with them but aren\u2019t available otherwise. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>These sorts of psychological effects can be like dominos, leading us to take other actions that<\/strong> then create other problems. Our shame leads us to snap at our partner, meaning they leave us. And then our shame worsens and turns into severe depression. And we miss so many days of work we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/made-redundant-covid-19.htm\">lose our job<\/a>. We blame it on our partner, unable to see that the root goes back to our alcohol dependency. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I am going to get control of my drinking <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Looking at your units is a good place to start. As is advice such as:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">always eating when drinking <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">alternating soft drinks with alcoholic ones <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">drinking more slowly. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But it\u2019s also a good idea to start<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\">asking good questions<\/a> about your binge drinking. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is my honest intention when I go out drinking? Is it really just to have fun, or is there more to this? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Who would I be as a person if I didn\u2019t always go out on benders? Do I even know?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>What would it feel like if I told everyone I love exactly how much I drank each time I go out? What does that tell me about my alcohol intake?<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can I become the person I dream of being if I keep up my binge drinking habit?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Need help with your drinking?
