Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">Feeling depressed<\/a> that you&#8217;ve gained weight lately? Or is it really that you were already a bit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">depressed<\/a>, and that\u2019s why you turned so easily to food? Weight gain and depression can be closely linked.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Did gaining weight make me depressed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, it can feel defeating to realise none of your<\/strong> clothes fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #666699;\">But if our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\"> mental health<\/a> was good before a bit of weight gain, it\u2019s unlikely to throw us into a proper depression. We might feel annoyed with ourselves and have a good moan with friends. But if we still have a healthy BMI, then we will get over it. If there is an issue, we\u2019ll make a plan to get back on track and get on with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Weight gain and depression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But what if we really are depressed? Unless weight gain is from a<\/strong> medical or hormonal issue, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/menopause-anxiety.htm\">menopausal<\/a> weight gain, our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">depression<\/a> tends to be for more complicated reasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The weight gain has triggered<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem issues<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/controlling-behaviours-actually-guilty.htm\">control issues<\/a> we already had. Or, it\u2019s happening because it\u2019s come hand-in-hand with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">stress<\/a>, c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">hallenging times<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/repressed-memories-are-they-real.htm\">old issues coming to the surface<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>So the reason we are depressed can be <em>partly<\/em> attributed to our weight. But it is also because <\/strong>w<\/span><span class=\"s1\">e\u2019ve taken too much on at work and lost our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-balance-tips-have-you-tried-this.htm\"> life balance<\/a>\u00a0and time to exercise, we&#8217;ve turned to junk food after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/getting-over-a-breakup.htm\">breakup<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">bereavement<\/a>, or we\u2019re overeating to numb out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">memories of our traumatic childhood<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">(Note that if you aren\u2019t just overweight but are clinically obese, then it\u2019s a different story, see below).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can depression cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>On the other hand, yes, depression can directly cause weight gain.<\/strong> Depression can make people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">socially avoidant<\/a>, meaning they are less active. It means certain parts of your brain \u2018dim down\u2019, which can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">feeling exhausted<\/a> and heavy-limbed, making motivation to exercise harder. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">And depression often affects eating habits. Some people actually lose their appetite and lose weight, but many people find themselves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-overeating-case-study.htm\">overeating<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gaining weight on antidepressants <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you decide to treat your depression with antidepressants, then there is a risk your medication will cause weight gain.<\/strong> An antidepressant that does not cause weight gain it the magical unicorn everyone seeks, but there is no perfect answer here. There are some antidepressants that are less prone to cause a weight difference, but they might not be suited to you. As each person\u2019s body metabolises things differently. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Taking antidepressants and maintaining your weight is not impossible.<\/strong>\u00a0Some people just have a makeup that means it\u2019s not much of an issue,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>although they might suffer other issues altogether, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-sex-drive-2.htm\">lowered sex drive<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\">insomnia<\/a>. And others take steps like take getting support to stay on track with healthy eating, or upgrading their fitness, and don&#8217;t see much of a difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Obesity and depression <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">The link between obesity and depression is stronger than the link between general weight gain and depression. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">To clarify the difference between the two, the World Health Organisation (WHO) gives the guideline that a BMI between 25 and 29.99 indicates you are overweight, and a BMI of 30 or more is considered obesity. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Obesity and depression statistics originally suggested that depression raises your risk of obesity by 18 per cent.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20462641\/\">The research<\/a> that came up with this statistic was an analysis of over seventeen other studies, and found that the link was more common in depressed females than males. And that it was an issue for women no matter what age they were or what continent they lived in. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Another<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/210608\"> overview of research<\/a> <strong>looked more closely at the difference between depression and weight gain versus depression and obesity.\u00a0<\/strong>The result was that it has raised these statistics substantially higher. While making it clear that \u201cevidence of a biological link between overweight, obesity, and depression remains complex and not definitive\u201d, it still proposes-\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8211;that obese persons have a 55 per cent higher risk of depression, and depressed people have a 58 per cent chance of becoming obese. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Childhood obesity and depression <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Again, it\u2019s not a cut and dried situation. Overweight children also experience<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">bullying<\/a> and ostracising, which can cause also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But statistics do show a strong connection<\/strong> between depression and obesity in children and teens.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">An <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20462641\/\">American study<\/a> of almost ten thousands adolescents in grades 7 through 12 found that if a young person was depressed, it gave them an almost 50 per cent higher chance of being obese a year later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Depressed about weight gain? What now? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The more depressed we are, the harder it can become to care about<\/strong> our eating choices, or to get out and exercise. But these things are not impossible.
