And between agoraphobia and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">social anxiety<\/a>, not sure where you fall? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Can social anxiety become agoraphobia? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">You had social anxiety before all the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/second-lockdown-stress.htm\">lockdowns<\/a>, but it seemed to ease. Now the world is opening up again, and it\u2019s back with a vengeance. You are worried that it\u2019s not just anxiety anymore, but agoraphobia.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Instead of one becoming the other, it&#8217;s more likely you have both at the same time.<\/strong> A<\/span><span class=\"s1\">goraphobia and social anxiety have many similarities, and do intersect as\u00a0 a common &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-comorbidity.htm\">co-morbid<\/a>&#8216; (occurring together) diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But there are also differences, and understanding them<\/strong> can help you get the right treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is agoraphobia? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The clich\u00e9 of agoraphobia is someone cowering at home, afraid to leave.<\/strong> But the condition is far more complex. And the fear is not just of \u2018leaving the house\u2019 or of\u00a0 &#8216;wide open spaces&#8217;. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Agoraphobia is a fear is of being in any sort of situation where you might be trapped, or could<\/strong> only escape in an obvious and embarrassing way. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\">You are afraid that in that situation you will have a meltdown. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">So essentially, the fear is of having a public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attack<\/a> with an audience. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And that fear is enough that often, yes,\u00a0<\/strong> it seems easier to stay home.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">The <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/conditions\/agoraphobia\/overview\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">NHS estimates<\/span><\/a> that two in 100 people in the UK have panic disorder.\u00a0 And of those people, a third go on to have agoraphobia. And they suggest that women are more than twice as likely to have agoraphobia than men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Symptoms of agoraphobia\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Agoraphobia can mean you:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">are afraid to leave the house alone<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">avoid crowded places like malls\u00a0 and public transport<\/span><\/li>\n<li>don&#8217;t like &#8216;trapped&#8217; places like elevators, tunnels<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">sit near the door or by the aisle if you must take a bus or train<\/span><\/li>\n<li>can feel trapped and panicky waiting in queues<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feel more comfortable going out with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trust.htm\">a person you trust<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don&#8217;t like wide open spaces like fields (which are hard to get out of as so big).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If you get diagnosed with agoraphobia, you might also get a diagnosis of panic disorder, or, at the very least, high anxiety. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_122724\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122724\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122724\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-4-400x284.jpg\" alt=\"agoraphobia and social anxiety\" width=\"400\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-4-400x284.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/5860286213_4bfe58e282-4.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-122724\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/giraffecereal\/5860286213\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Kristin Schmit<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What is social anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Social anxiety isn\u2019t really about places, it\u2019s about people.<\/strong> And more than just people, it&#8217;s about the thoughts you believe people are having.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">If you have social anxiety disorder, you are afraid of being looked at and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-stop-judging-others.htm\"> judged<\/a> negatively. So you fear places full of people, but only as that involves possible scrutiny.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And you can just as easily have social anxiety over meeting one <\/strong>person as being in a crowd, if you think that one person might judge you. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\">Similarities of agoraphobia and social anxiety<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Both of these conditions will:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">make your social life a challenge<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">involve racing thoughts and feelings of fear.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Differences\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">When it comes to agoraphobia vs social anxiety, the difference is: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">fear of cf closed in or too big places vs fear of people<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">avoiding a public meltdown vs avoiding being judged <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">don\u2019t like being trapped vs don\u2019t like being looked at <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">feel better with a friend vs often feel better alone. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Other related mental health disorders <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-122744\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tonik-U0wwiY6nRGA-unsplash-400x296.jpg\" alt=\"agoraphobia and panic disorder\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tonik-U0wwiY6nRGA-unsplash-400x296.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tonik-U0wwiY6nRGA-unsplash-500x370.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/tonik-U0wwiY6nRGA-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>So we\u2019ve already seen that panic disorder<\/strong> often comes alongside agoraphobia.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">In fact most cases of agoraphobia develop as a result of panic disorder. You have a public panic attack, then become so afraid of this embarrassing situation recurring you become agoraphobic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">Depression<\/a><strong> is another \u2018co-morbid\u2019 condition here.<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\">loneliness<\/a> and sense of being \u2018flawed\u2019 that can arise from your inability to just go out and be social can mean you have issues with low moods and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thinking.htm\">negative thinking<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>But I never had a panic attack before<\/h2>\n<p><strong>It is possible to become agoraphobic without panic. In such rare cases,<\/strong> it would be about other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fears-and-phobias.htm\">phobias<\/a>. You might, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>fear public places where a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/effects-of-terrorism-on-society.htm\">terrorist attack<\/a> could occur<\/li>\n<li>or be afraid of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/coronavirus-children-kids.htm\"> picking up a virus<\/a> or illness in a crowded place<\/li>\n<li>or simply be afraid of doing something embarrassing if you are in public.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why do I have this condition?<\/h2>\n<p><em>So why did you end up with panic attacks, fears and phobias? Why are you agoraphobic when your friends aren&#8217;t?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Like most mental health conditions, scientists don&#8217;t <\/strong>have an exact answer, but think it&#8217;s a combination of biological and environmental causes (the situations you lived through).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biology wise, you might have been born with a genetic leaning towards<\/strong> experiencing anxiety and panic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4303399\/\">Research shows<\/a> this seems to be a dysfunction in the way certain brain circuits manage themselves, a sort of &#8216;imbalance&#8217; of neurotransmitters, as well as issues in how your brain responds to perceived threats.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And your natural tendency towards anxiety and panic would then<\/strong> have been &#8216;triggered&#8217; by things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">childhood trauma<\/a> or an extremely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-hate-change-management.htm\">stressful life change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Can therapy help my agoraphobia and social anxiety?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Yes. And it&#8217;s highly recommended.<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\"> Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> is the most common form of talk therapy offered.
