Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In your late thirties or older, or put into<\/strong> medical menopause, and feeling a mess lately?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-vs-depression.htm\">Anxious, depressed<\/a>, all over the place? The menopause and mental health connection is worth learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Is your issue just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\">depression<\/a>? Or is it actually just menopause? The answer is not that simple and is often&#8230; both.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Menopause and mental health <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Research on menopause and mental health has been surprisingly slow. But it is recognised that for some, menopause can put their mental health at risk from the moment their hormonal profile starts to decline. This is generally the case <em>if you already had mental health issues in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;The vast majority of women who develop significant mood issues during perimenopause have had them in the past. It&#8217;s relatively rare for someone with no history of depression or anxiety to suddenly develop a severe case of it at menopause&#8221;. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/womens-health\/menopause-and-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Hadine Joffe,\u00a0 Professor of Psychiatry in Women&#8217;s Health at Harvard Medical<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Perimenopause and depression<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>It&#8217;s been discovered that it&#8217;s early on in<\/strong> our hormonal transition that we are most sensitive to depression. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6226029\/#R17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent review of research around menopause and mental health:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;longitudinal studies, conducted across the world and in diverse populations, confirm that women are two to five times more likely to experience a depressive disorder during the peri versus the late premenopausal years&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Anxiety in perimenopause<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/anxiety-therapy.htm\">Anxiety<\/a> is also a common complaint during perimenopause. But t<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he research explaining its direct link is still flimsy, not helped by the fact that hot flashes mimic many of the symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/panic-attack-vs-anxiety-attack.htm\">panic attacks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">But it&#8217;s thought to be related to declining progesterone levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>With less progesterone circulating,\u00a0 it can contribute to<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/release-muscle-tension.htm\">feeling tense<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\"> stressed<\/a>. Meaning your body takes it as a sign to produce more of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">anti-stress hormone<\/a> cortisol, leaving you in an anxious state. Which, in a vicious cycle, the body can take as a sign to produce even less progesterone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\">Why is menopause depression controversial?<\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-122810 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/conscious-design-_SDDwS5Eq1s-unsplash-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"menopause and mental health\" width=\"299\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/conscious-design-_SDDwS5Eq1s-unsplash-266x400.jpg 266w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/conscious-design-_SDDwS5Eq1s-unsplash-399x600.jpg 399w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/conscious-design-_SDDwS5Eq1s-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As pointed out by the<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6226029\/#R17\">\u00a02018 large-scale review of menopause research<\/a><\/span>, \u201cFor many decades, there has been an ongoing debate about whether the menopause transition and\/or post-menopause is associated with an increased risk for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depressive symptoms<\/a> or disorder\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">The debate has been focussed on just how exactly declining hormones could cause depression. A strange argument, given that almost all mental health issues are routinely identified as both biological AND environmental. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>We recognise, for example, that a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/help-a-teen-with-depression.htm\">teen is depressed<\/a> not just because of hormones, but also because of the general stress of being a teen, such as having to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">find their identity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Menopause and mental health &#8211; how it works<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The review thankfully steps in to finally <\/strong>clarify just this. That\u00a0when we look at menopause and mental health &#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">&#8220;&#8211;we need to accept that &#8220;multiple psychosocial and biological factors are involved.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Physical symptoms of perimenopause and depression<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">When looking at the &#8216;biological factors&#8217; it&#8217;s important to note that many of the physical side effects of peri\/menopause are themselves standalone causes of anxiety and depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>One common menopause side effect<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleeplessness.htm\">insomnia or disrupted sleep, which has a very strong causal link with depression<\/a>. Poor sleep is of course not helped if one also has night sweats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/low-libido-reasons-for.htm\">Loss of libido<\/a> is another commonly reported perimenopause symptom. Which can cause a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/who-am-i-identity-crisis.htm\">loss of identity<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-relationships.htm\">relationship issues<\/a>. Both of which are directly related to\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-help-a-partner-with-depression-anxiety-trauma.htm\">anxiety and depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Then there is dealing with memory loss and the\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/foggy-brain.htm\"> foggy thinking<\/a> that can also be a symptom. And navigating hot flashes. Which can all affect<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">daily coping<\/a>, as well as things like our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">work performance<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>New life stressors during middle age<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">As for &#8216;psychosocial factors&#8217;,\u00a0 there are new life stressors in middle age that can play a part in mental health struggles. For starters, we are still dealing with a society that doesn&#8217;t fully embrace ageing women. Meaning we can be left feeling suddenly invisible and irrelevant.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Other very real new stressors at middle age include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/empty-nest-syndrome-how-to-manage.htm\">kids leaving home<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">unresolved past traumas<\/a> rising to finally be dealt with now the kids are not around to keep you too busy to think and feel<\/li>\n<li>having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/midlife-crisis-depression.htm\">midlife crisis<\/a> (feeling your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">life has had no purpose<\/a>, etc)<\/li>\n<li>age discrimination in the work place, feeling overlooked<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/caregiver-mental-health-taking-care-of-you-when-taking-care-of-others.htm\">caring for elderly or unwell parents<\/a><\/li>\n<li>a partner or ourselves dealing with other health issues or a difficult diagnosis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/truth-about-grief-and-bereavement.htm\">starting to lose friends<\/a> to disease and illness<\/li>\n<li>the high rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/life-after-divorce.htm\">divorce<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-people-cheat-on-partners.htm\">affairs<\/a> in this age range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Depression around ageing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">By your early forties, you might start to notice that \u00a0your perfect hair is suddenly lank, your skin is dry in a way it never was. There is a blonde fuzz growing all over your neck and jawline, and a paunch starting where you used to have abs.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Not everyone takes ageing quickly in stride. Some of us are simply more<\/strong> body-aware and aesthetic than others, or with jobs that rely on us to look a certain way. While once even after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-disorder-tips-insomnia.htm\">very little sleep<\/a> we could look presentable, we might feel that everything suddenly takes an exhausting amount of work to maintain. And it can affect our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">self-esteem.<\/a> And low self-esteem is a common contributor to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\">depression<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But my friends are doing just fine <\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>There are factors that might have made you more sensitive to<\/strong> mental health issues during menopause. One of these is suffering from premenstrual syndrome or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-pmdd.htm\">premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15121571\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">study of over 400 women<\/span><\/a> found that\u00a0 &#8220;women who reported premenstrual syndrome at baseline were at greater risk of menopausal hot flushes, depressed mood, poor sleep, and decreased libido.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What if menopause is making me a bad person?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Feeling, well, more&#8230; <em>bitchy <\/em>lately? \u00a0<\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/caitlin-moran-me-drugs-and-the-perimenopause-mpzn2cdh2\">Viral article \u201cMe, Drugs, and the Perimenopause&#8221;,<\/a> by award-winning Times columnist Caitlin Moran, is a must read. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">It points out that maybe we are just becoming aware of what was always there, and that that&#8217;s okay. So go easy on your good self.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">At Caitlin shares:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Since the age of 13, when my ovaries cranked into action, I have been regularly bathed in oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone. You can Wikipedia what these hormones\/drugs do. I can tell you what their primary effect is. They make you a bit stoned and lovely&#8230;we\u2019re kind of high on nature\u2019s sexy Valium. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">However, as your perimenopause gathers pace, you experience what I can only describe as increasing sobriety.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><span class=\"s1\">Of course, this is the clich\u00e9 of the suddenly furious menopausal battle axe, that somehow the menopause has \u201cmade her angry\u201d. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">No. It\u2019s that the menopause has\u00a0<i>stopped her being so blithe and forgiving<\/i>. It\u2019s uncovered her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/personality-disorder-vs-personality-trait.htm\">actual personality<\/a> and thoughts, underneath all the hormones. This is a very important distinction.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>What should I do if I think my mental health issues are menopause related?<\/h2>\n<p>Sure this is you? What now?<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Don&#8217;t assume your mood issues are all menopause, see a doctor for a checkup.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Assuming your mental health issues are the menopause<\/strong> means you could overlook other very real issues causing mental health problems.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An <strong>overactive thyroid gland<\/strong>, a common middle-aged health issue, is a common cause of anxiety.<\/li>\n<li>And<strong> contraception coils<\/strong> are now linked to mood disorders, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7485277\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one research study<\/a> finding this is particularly true when the coil is replaced later in a woman&#8217;s life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Take a holistic view of your health.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>While it&#8217;s easy to develop &#8216;menopause tunnel vision&#8217; and make it the thing to<\/strong> blame everything on, it&#8217;s actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">not a helpful perspective<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">Remember that mental health issues surface in menopause for those who generally already had issues. And that there are many issues in middle aged, both physical and mental, that all need attention if we are to feel mentally balanced.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you doing yearly physicals, taking care of all health issues, respecting your body? Or are you overlooking other problems as if they don&#8217;t matter?<\/li>\n<li>Have you been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/steps-to-wellbeing.htm\">practicing the tools that help your wellbeing<\/a>? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/food-and-mood.htm\">Eating well<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercising<\/a>? or have you let these things slide?<\/li>\n<li>Have you made time to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">keep your relationships healthy<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Are you remembering to do things that &#8216;fill the tank&#8217;,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/spending-time-alone.htm\"> taking time for yourself<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reaching-out-support.htm\">have support<\/a> for your mental health? And for things that can cause undo stress like your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">financial situation<\/a>? (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/debt-depression.htm\">Debt is also linked to depression<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/bmcwomenshealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12905-021-01338-w\">small but interesting study from Iran<\/a> found that menopausal women were less likely to experience moderate depression or severe anxiety if they had a consistent exercise regime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>3. Seek menopause support and treatment.<\/h3>\n<p>There is more help out there than ever before. Whether that is going the natural route, and trying supplements like black cohosh, or trying a HRT regime? If you are suffering, it&#8217;s worth looking into your options. And if your mental health is a mess, then don&#8217;t keep putting off getting support.<\/p>\n<h2>Can therapy help me with menopause and mental health?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Absolutely. For starters, it provides a safe space to vent your frustrations<\/strong> if your issues aren&#8217;t being taken seriously by those around you. But it also helps you build<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-cope-life-is-crazy.htm\"> coping skills<\/a> for handling low moods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it helps you navigate the social stressors of<\/strong> ageing, including the identity change that menopause can feel like. It&#8217;s a wonderful addition to your menopause treatment, whether that includes a HRT regime or not. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/healthy-living\/womens-health\/later-years-around-50-years-and-over\/menopause-and-post-menopause-health\/menopause-and-your-mental-wellbeing#:~:text=Changes%20in%20your%20hormones%20during,anger%20and%20irritability\">NHS recommends cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> as a good start.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Want to talk to someone about how menopause is affecting you?
