Darcy<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/global-pandemic-anxiety.htm\"> pandemic<\/a> you had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/reentry-anxiety.htm\">time off work<\/a>, or didn\u2019t have to go in to the office. And something in you is just\u2026 done. You don\u2019t want to work anymore. To the point that maybe you are even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/difficult-employee.htm\">starting to be be a difficult employee<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Is there something wrong with you?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>You are far from alone<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/nationalaccounts\/uksectoraccounts\/compendium\/economicreview\/april2019\/analysisofjobchangersandstayers\">According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS)<\/a>, almost one in 10 British citizens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">changed jobs<\/a> yearly in the decade leading up to to the pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/second-lockdown-stress.htm\"> lockdowns<\/a> later, that number has soared.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Research by <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.personio.de\/hubfs\/EN_Downloads\/202104_HRStudy_UKI.pdf\">HR software firm Personio<\/a> suggests that four in 10 employees in Britain are now looking t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/should-i-quit-my-job.htm\">o leave their job<\/a> and change roles, with the number rising to a shocking 55 per cent when looking at 18 to 34 year olds.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Don&#8217;t want to work, or depressed?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It is true that depression can see you lose interest in things that you were<\/strong> fine with previously, including your job. Apathy is a possible<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-know-if-you-are-depressed.htm\"> symptom of depression<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If it\u2019s depression, you will likely have lost interest in<\/strong> other things you usually liked, too, such as hobbies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-social-anxiety-disorder.htm\">socialising<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">And you would have other <\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-symptoms.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">signs <\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\">of depression, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I have negative, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/cognitive-distortions.htm\">hopeless thoughts<\/a> that go over the past? Or are about putting myself down?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And\u00a0 physical symptoms of depression like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/causes-of-exhaustion.htm\">fatigue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/sleep-problems-mental-health-issue.htm\">sleep issues<\/a>, changes to eating patterns, headaches,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\"> unexplained aches and pains<\/a>, ongoing colds and flu? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I suddenly using substances like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-and-depression.htm\"> alcohol<\/a>, cigarettes, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/party-drugs-depression.htm\">party drugs<\/a> more than usual?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">[Take our free <a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/quiz-stressed-or-depressed\">&#8216;Stressed or Depressed?\u2019 quiz here<\/a>].<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When we hate the job instead of admitting we hate something else<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_122861\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/23148882492_d6af3bbe0d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122861\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-122861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/23148882492_d6af3bbe0d-400x381.jpg\" alt=\"don't want to work anymore\" width=\"400\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/23148882492_d6af3bbe0d-400x381.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/23148882492_d6af3bbe0d.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-122861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/53272102@N06\/23148882492\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\">Abhijit Bhaduri<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s socially acceptable in our society to moan about hating work.<\/strong> It&#8217;s less acceptable to admit you hate your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/common-issues-in-couples-therapy.htm\">marriage<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/positive-parenting-tips.htm\">being a parent.<\/a> Or that you have made a huge mistake choosing the lifestyle you did, and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/12-steps-to-overcoming-bitterness.htm\"> feel bitter<\/a> you work hard when a partner sits at home.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #666699;\">So sometimes, if we hate work, it&#8217;s because we are transferring over our dissatisfaction about other parts of our life.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If it\u2019s the job, what is the real problem?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It&#8217;s important to ask good questions and find the real problem with work. Otherwise you might <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-impulsivity.htm\">impulsively make a decision<\/a> that can result in taking yet another job you hate, or on a spiral down into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/money-stress.htm\">money issues<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/why-do-i-feel-hopeless.htm\">hopelessness<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. What is \u2018work\u2019 to me? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Do you dislike the nine to five<\/strong>\u00a0lifestyle? Or being like everyone else? Or is it more that you hate making a living doing what others tell you to?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u2018Work\u2019, is simply \u2018effort to produce a result\u2019.<\/strong> Any other definition says more about you than work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Is this about the present, or the past?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>And when you say \u2018I hate work\u2019, is it even a present day hatred?<\/strong> Or is it about difficult past experiences?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If, for example, as a child you had parents who<\/strong> always <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/constant-criticism.htm\">criticised you<\/a> for \u2018not working hard enough\u2019, or a teacher who called you \u2018lazy\u2019 because they didn\u2019t understand you had a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/learning-disabilities-vs-learning-difficulties.htm\"> learning disorder<\/a>? You might have an unconscious block to &#8216;work&#8217;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Instead of letting this lead you to constantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-sabotage.htm\">self-sabotage<\/a>, consider finding a word that feels less negative for you. \u201cMaking a living\u2019 is one. Or you might feel most inspired by \u2018benefitting from my talents\u2019 or \u2018being resourceful\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. Things change. A job aligned with our personal values is no longer a job, it\u2019s a vocation, and the hours fly by.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. Is it the job, or the people?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>We aren\u2019t all made to get along. Sometimes we just end up in a team<\/strong> that is so different from us we feel uncomfortable. We like efficiency, and are stuck with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-and-creativity.htm\">creative<\/a> team that wastes hours brainstorming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>A careers counsellor can help here. They might do<\/strong> personality tests to help you see your strengths, and what kind of job would work best for you. It might simply be a case of moving to a different part of the company you are already in. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. What is my working style? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Hate the 9-5 grind? It is far from the only way to work. <\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Many people make just as much money (or more) from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/changing-workplace.htm\">freelancing<\/a> and working the hours they want, or from changing their business model. For example, going from working one-on-one with clients to teaching courses instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">What if the truth is that the problem is, well\u2026 you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Does each job you take tend to lead to the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-at-dealing-with-conflict.htm\">conflict<\/a>? It takes a tremendous amount of courage to admit <\/strong>that we might be the problem. But it\u2019s only when we see what the real root is that we can find solutions that actually work. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you have a relating issue that means you always end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">in opposition with colleagues<\/a>? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/victim-mentality.htm\">victim mentality<\/a> so you are sure everyone is against you and are paranoid?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Is the issue a problem with authority?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or is it about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-thoughts.htm\"> low self-esteem<\/a>, to the point you take jobs you hate, or sabotage your jobs and end up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/shame-definition.htm\">ashamed<\/a> and wanting to leave?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>All these sorts of issues tend to relate to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\">unresolved past experiences<\/a>. This could be the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-parents-are-you-one.htm\">we were or weren\u2019t parented.<\/a> Or it can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-childhood-trauma.htm\">traumas<\/a> we lived through that changed the way we see ourselves, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fight-or-flight-response.htm\">how we act in response to stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>By dealing with our unresolved issues, our life at work can change without even focussing on it.<\/strong> Because we change. The small decisions we make daily change, and the way we interact with others, too. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Of course we can be so trapped in our own patterns of thinking<\/strong> and behaving, we don\u2019t even realise there is another, more helpful way of being. We need support, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-be-successful-in-life.htm\"> talk therapy<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">see other perspectives<\/a>\u00a0and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\"> find our way forward<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I really, really just don&#8217;t want to work anymore<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The idea of sitting on your couch all day just watching TV might sound ideal, but give it a try and<\/strong> you\u2019ll find it gets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/i-am-bored-lockdown-covid.htm\">boring<\/a> quite quickly. Humans are geared to learn and evolve. We feel good when we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/finding-your-purpose-anxiety.htm\">have a purpose<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Think of the last time you felt really alive. Truly buzzed with energy and excited about life.<\/strong> What were you doing? Was it a hobby, were you<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/boosting-your-mood-volunteer.htm\"> helping others<\/a>, learning something new?
