Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Wondering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/thought-stopping.htm\">how to stop thinking<\/a> about someone?\u00a0 And why it is that you can\u2019t stop thinking about them when they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-heartbreak.htm\">broke your heart<\/a>, or made you crazy?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why can\u2019t I stop thinking about him or her? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Hard cold reality &#8212; you were in an unhealthy relating situation<\/strong> and the end result of that is never a good feeling. It&#8217;s feeling broken and obsessed.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">How is that possible? <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sadly, we live in a society that encourages unhealthy approaches around relating.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/negative-effects-of-facebook.htm\">Social media<\/a>, films and television present us with an endless parade of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/bad-habits-or-addictions.htm\">addictive behaviours<\/a> that\u00a0 are sold to us as \u2018love&#8217;, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/codependency-symptoms-modern-times.htm\">codependent entanglements<\/a> that are called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">friendship<\/a>&#8216;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>These false ideas won\u2019t have too much of an influence on us if we grew up<\/strong> learning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">healthy relating<\/a> from the adults around us and had a safe, secure childhood. We\u2019ll simply know better. But what about the rest of us?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why are my relating skills not working?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Before you can understand how to stop thinking about someone, you need to get clear on how you got into this situation.<\/strong> Why would you be attracted into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/signs-of-an-unhealthy-relationship.htm\">unhealthy romances<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/toxic-friends-what-to-do.htm\">friendships<\/a>? Only to be left unable to move on? See if any (or all) of the following resonate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">1. You never learned what healthy relationships are.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>\u2018Modelling\u2019 refers to the way children learn behaviours from what they see around them.<\/strong> Examples of poor modelling would be parents or a parent who:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">always fought than made up, teaching you love is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-intensity-relationships.htm\">intense<\/a> and wild<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">or were dishonest, with one endlessly obsessed on where the other was, teaching you love is anxiety and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">overthinking\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotional-intensity-relationships.htm\">endless short and intense relationships<\/a> that left them broken and obsessed afterwards, teaching you that love is obsession.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">2. You have attachment issues.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-122909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/adrian-swancar-JXXdS4gbCTI-unsplash-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"how to stop thinking about someone\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/adrian-swancar-JXXdS4gbCTI-unsplash-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/adrian-swancar-JXXdS4gbCTI-unsplash-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/adrian-swancar-JXXdS4gbCTI-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Of course most of us, as we grow up, question any behaviours we learned from our parents, and start to learn our own. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">What doesn&#8217;t change as easily, however, is the belief about love we learned from our primary caregiver.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you were only loved if<\/strong> you were \u2018good\u2019? Or had a moody, unstable parent or guardian, who only loved you when they felt like it? Or not at all? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Then you are likely to grow up into an adult with <\/strong>what are called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/attachment-theory-bowlby.htm\">attachment issues<\/a>\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you are unable to stop thinking about someone, you most likely have <\/strong>\u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-anxious-attachment-style.htm\">anxious attachment<\/a>\u2019. You might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">push and pull in relationships<\/a> to get a break from the anxiety they cause you. But if the other person leaves, you panic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">3. You are a love and relationship addict.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #800080;\">A<a style=\"color: #800080;\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20876085\/\"> research overview<\/a> on addictions drawing on data from 83 studies found that love addiction was thought to affect up to 26% of the adult population.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When it comes to how to stop thinking about someone, you might have to face up to whether or not you are addicted. As yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When things were good with the person you can\u2019t stop thinking about, did you feel so great it was like you were \u2018high\u2019? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And when you fell out or fought did you feel so low you could hardly leave the house? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Or do your thoughts about this person tend to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/mental-wellbeing.htm\">sabotage<\/a> the rest of your life ? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Affect your work or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/student-stress-what-is-it.htm\">school performance<\/a>, leave you so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distracted<\/a> you forget important things, affect your sleep and eating, even? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Then you might have a problem with one of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/addicted-to-love.htm\">the different forms of relationship addiction.<\/a> This can look like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-love-addiction.htm\">love addiction<\/a>, romance addiction, or even just straight up people addiction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #333399;\">4. You lived through childhood trauma.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-can-i-remember-childhood-trauma-abuse.htm\">Trauma in our childhood<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-child-sexual-abuse-why-your-definition-might-need-updating.htm\">sexual abuse<\/a>, destroys our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/7-ways-stronger-sense.htm\">sense of self<\/a>. As an adult we can have such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/self-esteem-and-depression.htm\">low self-esteem<\/a>, we latch on to others as a way to feel we have value, and become addicted to their attention. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">Or we have what is called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-trauma-bonding.htm\">trauma bonding&#8217;<\/a>. We are so used to being a victim it forms our identity. We unconsciously seek out the highly destructive relationships that are our comfort zone, and become deeply addicted to them, even as they destroy us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">5. You have borderline personality disorder.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-122915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-267x400.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/nick-fewings-ka7REB1AJl4-unsplash-2-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><strong>More accurately called<\/strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/emotionally-unstable-personality-disorder.htm\">emotionally unstable personality disorder\u2019<\/a>, it means that you deeply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-private-hell-of-rejection-why-does-it-keep-happening-to-you.htm\">fear rejection<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><span class=\"s1\">T<\/span><span class=\"s1\">he tailspin that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/fear-of-abandonment.htm\">feeling abandoned<\/a> sends you into can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/push-pull-relationship.htm\">pushing away the other person<\/a>, then obsessing on doing whatever you can to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">manipulate<\/a> them to come back. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How to stop <\/span>thinking about someone<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>So then now what? How can you regain your headspace?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. Recognise that thoughts are thoughts, not reality. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you were a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/alcohol-use.htm\">recovering drug addict<\/a>, you would quickly question any thought about how great the drugs were, and how you should go back to that lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>When it&#8217;s a person we can try <\/strong>to convince ourselves it&#8217;s different. It&#8217;s not. You need to question each and every thought you have about them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Your obsessive thoughts about the other person will often be false, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/nostalgia-good-or-bad.htm\">romanticising<\/a> what happened, or giving you dishonest beliefs like you \u2018can\u2019t live without them\u2019. You can, and you will.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. Don\u2019t give the thoughts energy. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Yes, that means stop talking about it with everyone and anyone who<\/strong> will listen. Endless talking just feeds the addiction as you gain attention for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/live-life-like-victim-12-ways-tell.htm\">playing the victim<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And stop hanging around with people who<\/strong> profit from the fact that you are addicted to someone. Perhaps they are a person addict too. Or they take energy from seemingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/generous-person-or-over-giver.htm\">&#8216;helping&#8217; others<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><b>TRY THIS: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-use-a-self-help-journal.htm\">Journal with intention<\/a>, such as writing out all your thoughts without editing yourself, and then ripping the pages up after. <span class=\"s1\">Or find a private place, set a timer for five minutes, and make yourself talk about the other person to the end of the timer. If you are brave, record yourself, then play it back and have a listen.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333333;\">Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/relationship-counselling-london.htm\">talk to a therapist<\/a>. A therapist doesn\u2019t leave you to fall into a black hole of negative stories. They are highly trained at asking<a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-questions-to-ask.htm\"> just the right questions<\/a> to help you <a style=\"color: #333333;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-perspective.htm\">see new perspectives<\/a> you have missed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/feeling-stuck-in-life.htm\">find your way forward<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">3. But do give the<em> feelings<\/em> attention. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Often we have obsessive thoughts as we are numbing out our emotions of<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">anger, rage<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">grief<\/a>. If we actually work with our feelings instead, the crazy thoughts can pass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">TRY THIS: The next time you find yourself obsessing on the other person, find a quiet place, sit still, and close your eyes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/mindfulness-help-guide.htm\">applying mindfulness<\/a> to the situation. What is it you are actually feeling at this moment? Is it rejection? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-overcome-loneliness.htm\">Loneliness<\/a>? Rage? Just sit with that feeling, quietly, not judging or examining. What does it feel like? Is it hot, cold, heavy, dizzy? Where is it in your body? Let it mutate into other emotions if it wants to, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">4. How to stop thinking about someone? Practice replacement. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Baking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-exercise-more.htm\">exercising<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wrong-career-path.htm\">a new job<\/a>&#8230; the point here is to find a healthy replacement, and to throw yourself into it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">TRY THIS: Find one of the dreams and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-set-goals-that-work.htm\">goals<\/a> you let fall by the wayside when the other person came along. Sit down and break down al the steps reaching that goal will require. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/goal-setting-in-therapy.htm\">Use the SMART model<\/a>. Then schedule into your diary all the first steps and get going.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. Seek therapy for relationship addiction. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-hypnotherapy.htm\">Clinical hypnotherapy<\/a> helps breaks the hold the other person has on your mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/cognitive-behavioural-therapy-london.htm\">Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)<\/a> helps you recognise and question your thoughts, replacing them with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/balanced-thinking-benefits.htm\">balanced thinking<\/a> instead.
