Just how connected are music and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-mental-health.htm\">mental health<\/a>, anyway? <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Music and Mental Health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The power of music to uplift our mind and moods has long intrigued mankind.<\/strong> Plato, for example, is quoted as saying that music, \u201cgives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Music has also long been used as a form of therapy.<\/strong> According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musictherapy.org\/about\/history\/\">the American Music Therapy association<\/a>, music therapy was already being trialled in the early 1800s to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/medically-unexplained-symptoms-counselling.htm\">medical disesases<\/a> and alter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/dream-therapy.htm\">dream states<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">But what does modern research have to say about the power of music to<strong> negatively<\/strong> affect our moods? And are some of us more affected than others? If so, why? <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s not about the music, it\u2019s about you <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The way one person responds to music can be very different than<\/strong> the way the next person does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>For example, sad songs don\u2019t make everyone sad. In fact some people feel good<\/strong> when listening to sad songs, explaining the popularity of ballads and songs about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/psychology-of-heartbreak.htm\">heartbreak<\/a> climbing the charts. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0157444#pone.0157444.ref012\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">One study found<\/span> <\/a>that while some people experience genuinely negative emotions when listening to sad music, which it refers to as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/myths-about-grief-and-loss.htm\">grief<\/a>-stricken sorrow\u2019, it was more common to feel positive kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/rumination-anxiety.htm\">sadness<\/a>, such as \u201ccomforting sorrow\u2019 and \u2018sweet sorrow\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I feel all sorts of things, all at once<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_123193\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123193\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/travis-yewell-F-B7kWlkxDQ-unsplash-400x285.jpg\" alt=\"music and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/travis-yewell-F-B7kWlkxDQ-unsplash-400x285.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/travis-yewell-F-B7kWlkxDQ-unsplash-500x357.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/travis-yewell-F-B7kWlkxDQ-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-123193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Travis Yewell<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Music can also be a way to have a sort of emotional purge. <\/strong>We can feel joy, nostalgia, sadness\u2026 all in one song. For most of us this is a unique experience, as we don&#8217;t go through so many emotions at once in day-to-day life. (The exception here might be those with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/borderline-personality-disorder-treatment-therapy.htm\">borderline personality disorder<\/a>, who can swing from one emotion to the next very quickly). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And even if you think your background music isn\u2019t affecting you,<\/strong> as it\u2019s not \u2018emotional music\u2019, it still might be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">Neuroscientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fnhum.2015.00676\/full?\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">using functional magnetic resonance to monitor brain activity during music<\/span><\/a> listening discovered that emotion-related areas of the brain activated even if the music was just pleasurable and enjoyable over happy or sad.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">So then why can music leave me feeling so low sometimes? <\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0305735619849622\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">survey<\/span><\/a> of over 1500 young people found that 17 per cent reported feeling worse when they listened to sad music when already feeling low. And it was more common for females to be affected than males. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But you won\u2019t feel sad listening to music because you identify as the female <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-is-gender-dysphoria.htm\">gender<\/a>. The key phrase in the above is &#8216;already feeling low&#8217; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/gender-and-mental-health.htm\">more females than males experience depression<\/a>). The affected participants were already prone to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/depression-vs-sadness.htm\">sadness and depression<\/a> regardless, or had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/what-are-adverse-childhood-experiences-aces.htm\"> difficult past experiences<\/a> that affected their moods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>The same study found that it was young people who were<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/child-being-bullied.htm\">bullied<\/a>, had strained peer relations, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/comparing-yourself-to-others.htm\">compared themselves negatively to others<\/a> who were the most likely to find that music and mental health became a negative connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Why we can\u2019t stop the sad music <\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_123194\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123194\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/jem-sahagun-0Kf89_mSphc-unsplash-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"music and mental health\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/jem-sahagun-0Kf89_mSphc-unsplash-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/jem-sahagun-0Kf89_mSphc-unsplash-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/jem-sahagun-0Kf89_mSphc-unsplash-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/jem-sahagun-0Kf89_mSphc-unsplash.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-123194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Jem Sahagun<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6542982\">study on music use for mood regulation<\/a> in young people explains&#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">\u201cAlthough it appears that people with depression are most likely to use music to intensify a negative mood, they are also the least aware of this tendency. This is further complicated by the finding that an individual can become aware of unhelpful listening habits, but can lose that awareness when in a depressive state and revert to intensifying strategies.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>In other words, the the more depressed we are, the more likely<\/strong> we are to then use music to intensify our sadness. And the less likely we are to recognise that music is making things worse and stop listening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This is because depression affects our<\/strong> c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/the-cognitive-approach-therapies.htm\">ognitive functioning<\/a> (ability to think clearly and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-take-a-decision.htm\">make wise decisions<\/a> and judgements). So even if when we are in a stable mood we can recognise the affect music has on us? We can lose this clarity when we are sad. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I addicted to music? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>No research has shown music to be an addiction in and of itself<\/strong>. And we all need to zone out now and then when life is overwhelming. So it&#8217;s normal to escape into music, film, or TV sometimes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">But if it&#8217;s a daily thing, <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"s1\">we need to ask ourselves good questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Questions to ask yourself about music and mental health<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Am I using music to escape from feelings?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Or to hide from dealing with difficult experiences that need my attention? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Is my music listening affecting my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-relationships-is-it-one.htm\">relationships<\/a>? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/good-coping-skills.htm\">day-to-day coping<\/a>? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Do I forget important things, does it<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/disorganised.htm\"> make me late<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/daily-distractions-be-concerned.htm\">distracted<\/a>? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">And mean I avoid making good decisions?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">What am I using music to avoid? <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">And is that avoidance pattern itself the real thing I am addicted to? Not the music?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If these questions produce uncomfortable answers, then we might be using music as an unhealthy<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/defence-mechanisms.htm\">coping mechanism<\/a>. And it would be a good idea to ask ourselves if the payoff is worth it, or it might be time to start facing ourselves and our lives head on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Ready to stop hiding from life and start being your best self?
