Darcy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Feel like you have long lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/controlling-behaviours-actually-guilty.htm\">control<\/a> when it comes to parenting? Always asking yourself lately, \u2018why don\u2019t my kids respect me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Why don\u2019t my kids respect me?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Sometimes we can get so overwhelmed by the <\/strong>responsibility of parenting, or so caught up in the latest parenting trends, that we can lose touch with the basics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Respect between humans tends to follow<\/strong> the same rules, regardless of age or dynamic. Our kids (or our<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/teen-mental-health-get-help.htm\"> teens<\/a>) lose respect for us for the same reasons a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-dealing-with-difficult-colleagues-affecting-your-mental-wellbeing.htm\">colleague<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-find-friends.htm\">friend<\/a> would. Or for the same reasons we don\u2019t respect others. We have stopped listening and connecting, we are acting inappropriately, or we aren&#8217;t being upfront and honest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">1. You have unclear boundaries. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/healthy-boundaries.htm\">Personal boundaries<\/a> <strong>show others what we will or won\u2019t accept, and how we will or won\u2019t let someone treat us.<\/strong> If we set a boundary but then demonstrate otherwise, we can\u2019t expect the other person to believe in or respect the boundary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And when it comes to boundaries with our kids, we need to <\/strong>live them out across our life, not just with our children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><em><span class=\"s1\">For example, if you say you don\u2019t accept dishonesty from your kids, but then let your partner clearly and constantly lie about his whereabouts? Or you lie over the phone to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/how-to-deal-with-difficult-boss.htm\"> your boss<\/a>, in front of your kids? You have shown your children you don&#8217;t respect your own boundary, so why should they then respect it?\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">2. You are being inconsistent.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>You threaten they will get<\/strong> no dessert after dinner if they don\u2019t clean their room. And then there you are, giving them dessert. You promise you will be on time to pick them up for school. But are constantly late. <\/span><span class=\"s1\">These sorts of little inconsistencies add up, and can lead to a child losing respect for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>This calls into question<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/co-parenting-at-christmas-how-to-stay-sane.htm\">coparenting<\/a>. It\u2019s very important that you parent on the same page, even if you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/conflicting-parenting-styles.htm\">different parenting styles<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">The second you set up one parent as \u2018good cop\u2019 and the other as \u2018bad cop\u2019 you\u2019ve created space for disrespect. And note that your parenting decisions are between you and the other parent, and should not be hashed out in front of your children.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">[If you struggle to communicate and agree, don&#8217;t overlook the power of <a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/couples-therapy.htm\">couples counselling<\/a> to help with parenting.<\/span>]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">3. You are forgetting they aren&#8217;t you.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-123234\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sai-de-silva-cykFL7IQCTk-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"kids respect\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sai-de-silva-cykFL7IQCTk-unsplash-1-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sai-de-silva-cykFL7IQCTk-unsplash-1-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sai-de-silva-cykFL7IQCTk-unsplash-1-180x120.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/wp-content\/uploads\/sai-de-silva-cykFL7IQCTk-unsplash-1.jpg 709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>Remember, your children are independent, separate <\/strong>humans. They are not an extension of you, no matter how much they might seem like you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #800080;\">If you are not seeing or hearing your child for who they are, they might at first aim to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/people-pleaser-meaning.htm\"> please you<\/a> and be the \u2018mini you\u2019 you so desire. But as they grow up then become an adolescent this turns into lack of respect and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/different-types-of-anger.htm\">anger<\/a>, as they quite rightly try to forge their own identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993366;\">4. You&#8217;ve stopped listening to how your kids feel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Children often aren\u2019t so worried about exactly what did or didn\u2019t<\/strong> happen. They just want their parent to acknowledge how they feel. Yes, even if to you, as an adult, their feelings seem silly or easily solvable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In their book,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/How-Talk-Kids-Will-Listen-ebook\/dp\/B00APJOY3A\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <em>How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk<\/em><\/a>, authors Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish <strong>point out how quickly most parents deny their kid&#8217;s feelings, burying their kid&#8217;s attempt to share under advice, or a pile of questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our kid comes home and declares, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t like the sleepover&#8221;. And our first response is, &#8220;Of course you did! You are just shy. Didn&#8217;t you watch a nice movie? Have popcorn? Weren&#8217;t the girls you like there? Next time you just need to speak up more and not let your shyness get in the way.&#8221; <strong>Our child gets increasingly upset or shuts down. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, if we just encouraged our child to<\/strong> continue with a &#8220;Mmm hmmm, okay..&#8221;. Or reflected back and helped them clarify their emotions, &#8220;You didn&#8217;t like it? You don&#8217;t feel happy?&#8221; We allow our child a chance to vent. They feel seen and respected, and next thing they are telling us themselves what went well, and are feeling better.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">5. You are acting out lately. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s not just children who act out. Parents can do so, too<\/strong>. Particularly if you are going through a tough time and haven&#8217;t found a healthy outlet for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/types-of-stress.htm\">stress<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>If you lately \u2018set boundaries\u2019 only <\/strong>when you are screaming and in a rage, if you insult your children when you are stressed, or slam doors and block them out for hours on end? This is all adult temper tantrums. And your children will not feel safe, or might even be afraid of you. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\">Parenting can be tough. We all occasionally crack and say or do stupid things. But constantly doing so is a sign you need help and support for your own issues, before your children lose any and all respect for you.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">6. But eventually, children realise when their parents are hiding things, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/manipulative-behaviour-are-you-guilty.htm\">blackmailing them<\/a>. They might go along with it, to keep you happy, or because they want what you are promising. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>But just like you wouldn\u2019t respect a<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/is-my-boss-a-sociopath.htm\">boss who manipulates you<\/a> to get what they want, or a colleague who always lies instead of taking the time to talk to you? The price of this sort of parenting shortcut tends to be children who don\u2019t respect you. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #333399;\">And it will all come out when they are a teen and start reminding you you have no grounds to ask them to be honest, when you haven\u2019t been.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #993366;\">7. Your expectations are unfair. <\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Wanting our children to do well and<\/strong> pushing them to do their best at what matters to them is one thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Pushing a child constantly is another, as is pushing them to do things that <\/strong>are beyond their capacity, or far outside their interests. This is actually a sign of disrespect for your child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Do you really pay attention to who your child is? What matters to them? What<\/strong> their interests are, they skills? Their struggles and limits? <\/span><span class=\"s1\">Or do you have an idea of who your child should be and work to push them to be that person you want them to be?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">A<a style=\"color: #333399;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/11\/151117112652.htm\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> study published by the American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a> using a sample of over 3,500 secondary students &#8220;found that high parental aspiration led to increased academic achievement. But only when it did not overly exceed realistic expectation. When aspiration exceeded expectation, the children&#8217;s achievement decreased proportionately.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve left it all too late\u2026.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>Children do not need perfection. They need a parent who is <\/strong>present and doing their best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>It\u2019s never too late to step it up as a parent.<\/strong> It goes back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harleytherapy.co.uk\/counselling\/being-honest-does-it-matter.htm\">being honest<\/a>. Admit to your child you have made mistakes as a parent (it\u2019s not like they won\u2019t have noticed) and that you are now going to make changes. Then be clear with what those changes are, and consistent with putting them into action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><strong>And remember, again, that respect is universal.<\/strong> The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>more you take the time to see, listen to, and respect your children for the unique and wonderful human beings they are, the more they will respect the parent they can see is doing their best and really cares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Can&#8217;t seem to be consistent with your parenting?
